Rumors, Geo-Games and more fan fun and frivolity

The past few days have been interesting ones for Adam fans. First, Adam falls off this Twitter grid for three days, but from the 4 Tweets he sent in 5 days, we know that he arrived in London (well ninjas figured that out before he tweeted), finished his work with Ginny Blackmore (well Ginny had already Tweeted she was working with him), and that he was leaving London. Then there is the unexplained dream Tweet. I honestly have no idea what that is about.

But where is Adam?

Los Angeles – Not likely – If he had returned to Los Angeles, someone would have seen him.

Finland – Not likely – he could even get through security at the airport without being seen.

Sweden – Possible – he could go to Sweden and remain unnoticed. And he was slated to work with Max Martin.

Paris – Possible – it is a short flight and only an 8 hour drive. Last December, Adam and Sauli spent some time in Paris and were almost totally unnoticed.

UK – Possible – Adam tweeted that he was leaving London, not the UK. Perhaps he is still somewhere in the UK.

Ireland – Fantasy – Adam and Sauli are hiding away in David 640-acre estate located a short distance from Dublin. He only keeps it for tax purposes so he can maintain his Irish legal residence.

We all know about the Adam-Christina duet rumor. It has been pretty much debunked by Sia who tweeted that Adam texted this message to her:

Some fans continued to believe that there was really a duet recorded because Adam didn’t Tweet it. Others decided that the buzz might inspire RCA and Xtina to put the duet together. But most fans just had fun with the rumor and the resulting online buzz. I am happy as long as someone in the media is talking about Adam. And this rumor even got a nice feature on Perez’s blog.


A new game is born, “Rumormill”

So as we head into a new week, fans have no idea where Adam is or if he is working on not. The Xtina rumor has burned out a bit. We need a new rumor or two, and I want something more creative and more interesting than the recording of a duet. Why should we wait for new rumors when we can create some of our own? All you need to do is play Rumormill.

The rules of Rumormill are simple. Just use the day you were born and your initials to create your own rumor. For your initials use the first letter of your first name, your middle initial and the first letter of your last name. The just put together your rumor.

So if you were born on the 19th day of the month and your initials are OUL, your rumor is:

Agree or disagree, Sia’s tweet got people talking. And I see a connection between her words and recent speculation about Adam #2’s potential success. What does Adam have to do, what does he have to give to his fans, in order to achieve the success we all think he deserves? We talk about his devoted and loyal fanbase and our role in helping him reach his goals. But I’ve read enough comments from fans who wish he’d do more/less/different [insert activity of your choice] to recognize that many do have expectations of Adam, and some fans feel that they deserve something in return for their devotion to him.

Artists vary in how much they interact with and “give” to their fans, from being David Bowie-type recluses to the many hungry striving artists who make use of street teams to further their goals. And it’s difficult to compare what is happening now to how things used to be. Aspiring musicians have used social networking sites such as MySpace to share their work for a while, but the immediacy and the conversational vibe of Twitter has only been around for a handful of years, and with it, a whole new set of expectations. I love Jessie J, but had to unfollow her on Twitter because she was forever trying to appease entitled fans demanding a shout-out or a birthday greeting.

Specific to American Idol alums, there is a sense of ownership that comes along with the fanbase a singer earns. AI is designed to get viewers emotionally invested in the contestants—we get backstories and sob stories and well-edited personal information to make us care. The more we care, the more we vote, and after the show, if their favorite is lucky, the fans follow and continue to care enough to buy songs and albums and concert tickets. The emotional investment ideally turns into financial investment. But along with that investment there is a sense of ownership. The voter/fan has spent time and energy getting their favorite as far as possible on the show, and follows through by buying one or more copies of the artist’s songs and albums, calling radio stations with song requests, and attending events/concerts. The fan has come to expect a certain level of intimacy with their Idol, a certain level of gratitude, and can become frustrated or disinterested if that expectation is not met.

Funny, most of the singers I love aren’t online at all, and I can go months without knowing where they are or their facial hair situation. Of course, since many of them are women, ignorance of the latter is probably bliss. Only with Adam do I realize that I sometimes expect something more. I’m obviously on the ‘stan’ side of the fan spectrum, and I’ve come to expect a certain amount of information. I get whiny if I don’t know what continent Adam is on, and whether his boyfriend is with him, and who his musical collaborators are.

When it comes down to it though, it’s up to the artist to decide what and how much s/he wants to share. And it’s up to the fan to decide how much s/he needs in order to stay invested. What if Adam decided to delete his Twitter account and go into hiding, only emerging to give the occasional interview or staged appearance? What if he never did another meet & greet, or never came out after a concert to sign CD covers and random boobs? What if he brushed off fans at airports with cell phone cameras?

Ultimately, Adam decides how much fan interaction and sharing is right for him. And ultimately, I decide how much I need from him in order to stay invested. Best case scenario, he gets to have a semi-normal life and the career he desires, and everything else he gets from me is gravy. Best case scenario, I get enough to keep me invested enough to buy whatever he has to offer, and everything else I get from him is icing on the cake. If we are both able to find that balance, it’s a win-win. But that’s just me. Everyone else has to do their own math.

I have changed my recommendation on VH1 Do Something Awards to DO NOT VOTE

On 5.25.11 I recommended voting in this competition. Since then I have done some additional research and testing.

1. Voting for the celebrity online awards is just a way to build awareness for the real awards show.

2, Adam is not nominated for any award. The only way to vote for Adam is as a write-in. It takes much longer to cast a write-in vs. voting for a nominee. There is no limit on voting. So 10 minutes of Adam fan voting time can be wiped out in about 1 minute by someone voting for a nominee.

Poll rating (0=lowest rating, 10=highest rating)

Adam benefit: 3 – a win could raise awareness of The Trevor Project.
Fairness: 3 - there is an attempt to limit voting for just one category but it is very easy to work around.
Potential to win: 9 – The voting structure makes a write-in vote very timeconsuming.
Fan value: 2
RECOMMENDATION – vote only if you are willing to work really hard.


About the awards: DoSomething.org and VH1 have partnered to present The Do Something Awards to honor young people's commitment to social change. VH1 is doing a series of online contests to promote this event – they have nominees but also accept write-ins. One of the celebrity categories could help Adam but, more importantly make a difference.
