I think the "Man Down" music video is a perfect example of the double standard.
Men can be victims of abuse as well, and can you even imagine the huge universal uproar if the video depicted a guy shooting a girl. Where would the Rihanna apologists be then? Nonexistant, I think. :-/

One super sexy performance at the American Music Awards in 2009, and almost two years later, the glam-rocker is still persona non grata at ABC. So when fellow pop star Rihanna‘s new video for her latest single, “Man Down,” came under fire from critics and the Parents’ Television Council — the same group that led the witch hunt after Adam’s AMAs performance — for its gritty portrayal rape and murder, Adam felt the need to speak out in her defense. “Don’t understand why folks get so touchy bout music videos,” he wrote on Twitter. “There are so many tv shows about murder and crime. It’s all entertainment. What’s the difference if Rihanna is showing that type of story or if Law and Order is. At least w RiRi u get a dope beat and fierce hair.” Lambert tried to offer an explanation for why critics get their panties in a knot over music videos and not TV shows, saying, “Maybe it’s the distinction of a Popstar verses an Actor.” But in the end, he feels the line between the two should be blurred. “The song is clearly fictional. We know she didn’t really shoot anyone. And besides, most popstars are part actors anyway. #folksneedtochill” Rihanna’s already come out to defend her own video, saying, “I’m a 23 year old rockstar with NO KIDS! Remember when Adam did Mardi Gras in Sydney? He met Kelly Rowland there and they both said they wanted to write together. Kelly mentioned a couple of times after that in interviews and I think I remember she and Adam tweeting back and forth about it. So here's hoping that Adam is in Miami to write and record with Kelly as well as these other peeps. Nonexistant, I think. :-/ Huh? Not aware that women raping men is a problem in society. I'm not a "Rihanna apologist," because I don't think she needs anyone to apologize for anything. I like the vid because it takes a real issue and frames it as art. Art is meant to reflect society. The good, the bad, and the ugly. |
