It is interesting to examine boundaries and who gets to set them. I TA that the message emanating from Rihanna's video is nothing requiring censoring and she is actually expressing remorse for a wront act. And I am fine with artistic freedom of expression, etcetera but...big BUT here....I also know I have some lines that I believe need to be drawn and they may or may not coincide with other's geographical placement.
The sensual art/pornography line and where it belongs is a tough one. Does pornography put young women in danger? There are sites showing young girls/women [how do we know their age? they have minimal breast development but???] wearing diapers and mimicing babies but moving and filmed sexually. These sites have to appeal to those with pedophiliac tendancies/fantasies...but it is legal? But is it art?
A number of very famous ads appeared in mainstream magazines for perfumes usually....one showed a very young girl made up and positioned as a woman; another wore a costume like a playboy bunny costume but with feathers rather than a bunny tail, swinging on a perch such as you would find in a bird cage and being pulled by a dog leash around her neck...held by a mans hand from outside the cage...you never saw his face....hers showed vacant sexual entrancement. There is a lot written about the effect of the normalization of these sorts of sexualized images and they are run by mainstream companies in mainstream magazines....Dior...Gucci....Guess...in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, People.....
What does a parent do when they do not want these messages inundating their homes. If they remove the television they actually put their children at a distinct disadvantage in the social world. You can't network for jobs or fit into any business if you cannot small talk and do not understand cultural references....it is just not possible realistically.
It is a tough question that has been asked forever...Aristotle and Plato argued over it....classics are banned till society catches up with artists....
I am not agreeing with the parent's council, or whoever they are, ....do not misunderstand me....but I just fid the idea of no restrictions a bit unappealing too but would not want to be the ones having to make choices. I remember feeling really uncertain what to do when my 12 year old daughter and her friend were prancing about the houce many years ago singing "I want your sex.." and I was an urban, uptempo kind of gal.....single...running my own business...yikes....it was scary.

Speaking of Rihanna and divas in underwear ...
Rihanna gave a lap dance to a female fan. I tweeted that Adam should definitely do this for next tour.
Someone tweeted back that tickets would cost $3,000. True. I also said we'd likely have to sign a legal waiver and have our next of kin on standby ...

She does commissions; you should tweet or FB her and ask what she charges. Or I imagine the works in the gallery show are for sale. Thanks! I'll check her FB.

I'm sure that fan will not be the same! Might imagine a new possiblity ETA - but you might assume Adam would pick a guy to give a lap dance to .... but maybe not .......... Rihanna is straight and picked a woman from the audiance - same kind of diff - if you know what I mean! Picking people who are not of their "persuasions" 8-)

FYI: Lady GaGa will be interviewed by Anderson Cooper on 60 Mins tonight. In her underwear!! In the preview clip she said she just didn't feel like wearing clothes! ??? Show on now @7est. Not sure when she will be on, but plan to watch. And I love AC! ;D (on CBS) What's new about that - the girl loves to display her body which she does on every possible occasion. heh. I find her nudity/near nudity pretty monotonous by now, but evidently some still find it titillating. oh well. Seems she and Rihanna and others find that shock value necessary for their careers. I doubt they are so high-minded about artistic expression. I think it's strictly how far and how shocking can they go and how fast the $$$$$$ are rolling in because of it. oh well again. :

Sex sells...and the Pop Divas are selling it!

Could a guy get away with this? Even if it were with a female fan? Guess not, huh?

You can't lump Gaga's body display with that of the other Diva's, IMO, because she isn't showing it to look sexyt....she is making her own point. She rarely looks even remotely sexualized...she moves to a rythem but it is not to titilate the male gaze the way Brittany/Rhianna/Beyonce do. She looks real in an odd sort of surreal way...no fake boobs....airbrushing....voguey posing....she almost celebrates awkwardness and a dystopian sort of non-beauty That is why she has such avid fans....which I have never really been....just as I was never a big fan of Madonna... but they both have that fierce individuality and strength...and intelligence... about them that is missing in so many of the other female divas. Adam is special and unique also.... but his linneage is of Elvis and Freddie... hopefully he doesn't end up suffereing their fraileties as well....it looks like he walks on more solid ground .. only time will tell. Well aren't I the chatty cathy tonight....I will try to be a little less verbal for a bit here...

The pornography question is difficult, and there are feminist theorists on both sides of the issue (some are former sex-industry workers). I actually grew up in a house where the TV was used exclusively for PBS and Star Trek. My parents put a tiny padlock through the plug when they weren't around. When I left home for college I never had one in my dorm room, and after joining the working world and getting married, we eventually got a TV set to watch DVDs, it's never been hooked up to Broadcast TV or cable. We get news online. I watch some shows online now, or rent the DVDs, but I haven't "missed out" on cultural clues. I do watch a lot of movies. You can pick up all you really need to know by osmosis. I'd imagine controlling web surfing, even with software, would be somewhat more difficult, but the age when kids are able to work around it and run across the really disturbing stuff if they are curious is the age when you can start having the hard conversations anyway, it seems to me. I don't think you can protect children after a certain age from societal messages (how are you going to keep them from playing extremely violent video games at friends houses for example?), all you can do is counteract them by modelling and teaching empathy, and modelling and teaching self-confidence, assertiveness, and a sense of worth not related to sex appeal to your daughters. The best way to do this as a mother IMHO is to be the kind of person and live the kind of life you want your daughters to live--not to make sure that they are comfortable and sheltered. Reading Riri's tweets on that CNN article, it's clear that while she isn't trying to be a role model or parent, she does see herself as speaking a hard truth, and bringing the hidden to light to warn and make other young women aware. I don't think we are harmed by societies messages necessarily, as long as our decision making process when faced with the moments of hard truth is reality based. That means knowing about birth control and disease, and knowing that our desires, whatever they may be, are "normal" when deciding about when to have sex, for example. Anyway, that's part of why I've always appreciated Adam "keeping it real".
