Adam speaks out and supports Rihanna
6.6.11 by Q3
Adam Lambert took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon and tweets some info about his upcoming album that are in today’s album update (below). More importantly, he tweeted this statement about Rihanna’s latest video for her single, “Man Down”. And in 4 tweets, Adam summarized the situation and he worked in a comment about the “dope beat and fierce hair.”
don't understand why folks get so touchy bout music videos. There are so many tv shows about murder and crime. It's all entertainment.
What's the difference if Rihanna is showing that type of story or if Law and Order is. At least w RiRi u get a dope beat and fierce hair.
Maybe it's the distinction of a Popstar verses an Actor. But the song is clearly fictional. We know she didn't really shoot anyone.
And besides, most popstars are part actors anyway. #folksneedtochill [/color]
5 minutes after he tweet, the first article appeared:
Neonlimelight: Adam Lambert Defends Rihanna’s “Man Down” Video: ‘It’s All t.co/MaIPxH4
NeonLimelight: And now we need a @rihanna and @adamlambert collaboration. Please and thank you!
A bit of background
Rihanna's new music video for "Man Down" has caused a bit of controversy – well actually heated debate. In the video Rihanna's video protrays a woman who shoots a man who has sexually assaulted her.
BET has been airing the video last Tuesday, MTV has not decided if they will put the video into rotation. The Parents Television Council is urging BET to stop airing the video and asking MTV not to put add this video.
Rihanna took to Twitter May 31st:
Young girls/women all over the world...we are a lot of things! We're strong innocent fun flirtatious vulnerable, and sometimes our innocence
can cause us to be naïve! We always think it could NEVER be us, but in reality, it can happen to ANY of us! So ladies be careful and
#listentoyomama! I love you and I care!
Rihanna got a lot of support from fans but the critics continued to bash her. So on June 2, she once again
I'm a 23 year old rockstar with NO KIDS! What's up with everybody wantin me to be a parent? I'm just a girl, I can only be your/our voice!
Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents!
And this is why!Cuz we turn the other cheek! U can't hide your kids from society,or they'll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD!
WeLOVEManDown
The music industry isn't exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! Its your job to make sure they dont turn out like US
The story did not go away. As of Friday, BET said it would continue to play the video. MTV said it was in the process of reviewing it. The Parents Television Council is urging BET to stop airing the video and asking MTV not to put it into rotation. BET began airing the video Tuesday.
On Friday, Leslie Morgan Steiner wrote this great article for CNN.com:
Ban Rihanna's video? No, make it required viewing
Like most people reacting to the controversy involving 23-year-old Grammy-winning superstar Rihanna and her new music video, "Man Down," I'm shocked.
Not by the video but by the knee-jerk reaction of supposed experts on violence against women, such as the Parents Television Council, which has denounced it for its portrayal of rape and street murder.
"Man Down" shows a young woman in broad daylight near a crowded train station shooting a man who, we later learn, had raped her the night before. There are several shots of her holding a small black pistol. That's it for the grisly violence.
Frankly, reruns of Law & Order contain more disturbing crimes. Men's rap songs glamorizing sexual subjugation of women strike me as far more destructive, yet I hear their lyrics on my kids' favorite radio station every day.
Instead of criticizing the pop singer, I'd like to say thank you, Rihanna. She's done it again. In 2010, she and rapper Eminem painted a searingly accurate picture of how it feels to be trapped in a physically violent romantic relationship in "Love the Way You Lie." This time, she's lifted the curtain on another subject no one wants to hear about: the rage and vengeance fantasies that often constitute a normal, healthy reaction to rape and domestic violence.
Like Rihanna -- who was attacked in 2009 by her then-boyfriend --and the fictional victim she portrays in "Man Down," I too was a victim of sexual and physical abuse: once as a young girl and later at the hands of a physically violent husband. Our experience is all too common.
According to the National Organization for Women, nationally, three women are killed by an intimate partner every day. More than 600 are raped or sexually assaulted; according to the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network, girls ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. Factoring in projections of unreported rapes, there is only a 6% chance that a man who raped today would be caught, prosecuted and spend even one day in jail .
In only five minutes, Rihanna captures the complexity of being a victim. Beautiful Jamaican beach and street scenes from the day before the rape fill the video, signifying the longing a victim feels for a life that has been destroyed by the attack. Her reggae refrain chants: "I didn't mean to hurt him/I didn't mean to end his life/I know it wasn't right."

Here is Rihanna’s “Man Down” video:
There is nothing in the introductory dramatic murder scene that you could not see on a prime time network TV Crime Drama. Here are the lyrics to “Man Down”. Nothing in these lyrics condones or glorifies violence in any way.
Man Down – Lyrics
I didn't mean to end his life
I know it wasn't right
I can't even sleep at night
Can't get it off my mind
I need to get out of sight
Before I end up behind bars
What started out as a simple altercation
Turned into a real sticky situation
Me just thinking on the time that I'm facing
Makes me wanna cry
'Cause I didn't mean to hurt him
Could've been somebody's son
And I took his heart when
I pulled out that gun
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Man down
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Man down
Oh, mama, mama, mama
I just shot a man down
In central station
In front of a big old crowd
Oh why, oh why
Oh, mama, mama, mama
I just shot a man down
In central station
It's a 22, I call her Peggy Sue
When she fits right down in my shoes
What do you expect me to do
If you're playing me for a fool
I will lose my cool
And reach for my fire arm
I didn't mean to lay him down
But it's too late to turn back now
Don't know what I was thinking
Now he's no longer living
So I'm 'bout to leave town
'Cause I didn't mean to hurt him
Could've been somebody's son
And I took his heart when
I pulled out that gun
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Man down
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Man down
Oh, mama, mama, mama
I just shot a man down
In central station
In front of a big old crowd
Oh why, oh why
Oh, mama, mama, mama
I just shot a man down
In central station
Look, I never thought I'd do it
Never thought I'd do it
Never thought I'd do it, oh gosh
What ever happened to me
Ever happened to me, ever happened to me
Why did I pull the trigger
Pull the trigger, pull the trigger, boom
And end a nigga, end a niggas life so soon
When me pull the trigger, pull the trigger, pull it 'pon you
Somebody tell me what I'm gonna, what I'm gonna do
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Me say wah man down (A weh me say)
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
Rum bum bum bum
When me went downtown
'Cause now I am a criminal, criminal, criminal
Oh lord have mercy now I am a criminal
Man down
Tell the judge please give me minimal
Run out of town,
None of them can see me now, see me now
Oh, mama, mama, mama
I just shot a man down
In central station
In front of a big old crowd
Oh why, oh why
Oh, mama, mama, mama
I just shot a man down
In central station
So why has this video become a lightning rod for restricting television content? Perhaps it is because it features Rihanna who was already at the center of movements to establish stricter controls on broadcast content in both the US and UK? Or is it a sexist response to a video that features a female pop star playing the part of a women who gets revenge? I am not sure it matters. All I know is that “Man Down” is not the most graphically violent music video ever made – it isn’t even close.
Double standards?
In 1984, Farrah Fawcett earned her the first of her four Emmy Award nominations for her role as a battered wife in the fact-based television movie The Burning Bed. The Burning Bed was based on a non-fiction book by Faith McNulty about battered Dansville, Michigan, housewife Francine Hughes. The plot of the made-for-TV movie: Francine Hughes, an abused battered wife has had enough of husband beating up on her. Everywhere she turns for help, there's not much anyone will do. After he rapes her one night, she sets the bed on fire with him in it asleep.
In the movie and in real live, Francine Hughes defended herself by saying that her husband had been abusing her for 13 years. The jury at her trial ruled that she had been temporarily insane, and she was found not guilty.
This film wasn't condemned, it was honored as a work of art and as important social commentary.
Parents groups pushing for new standards in the UK
On June 5, 2011, “The Daily Mail” (UK) reported about the efforts to restrict sexual content in TV programmes in the UK.
TV chiefs will be ordered to cut raunchy routines on talent shows and sexual content in soap operas in a toughening of the 9pm watershed. Shows such as The X Factor must tone down their content after protests by parents over graphic performances by pop stars including Rihanna and Christina Aguilera. A report commissioned by the Prime Minister, to be published on Monday, demands an end to the sexualisation of young children.
…..
David Cameron will endorse the proposals of Reg Bailey, the chief executive of the Mothers' Union, who found parents are deeply concerned that sexual imagery in television, advertising and pop videos is making children grow up too fast.
Ministers will make clear that they expect changes and the Government is prepared to intervene directly unless the conveyor-belt of smut is toned down. The report also calls for a hard-hitting crackdown on internet pornography, demanding tighter parental controls over access to explicit websites.
Under the plans, laptops will be sold with parental controls automatically activated and customers will have to request specifically to receive porn – a reversal of the current position.

This is about more than Rihanna’s video
There are many issues involved in this situation – sexual content in music televised music performances, how women, society and legal systems deal with the victims of rape and other violent crimes, and what role do pop stars have as role models, for starters. But there are also two important general issues:
1. Who should decide what children and adults are able to see on television and online?
I do not want any government telling me what I can see or what my children can see. That is my choice. And the idea of restricting the content of cable television – stations that people need to chose to receive and can easily block makes no sense.
2. Do musicians and vocal performers have the same right to freedom of expression when make social and political statements in their music as a drama program?
Of course, the answer is, “Yes.”
Music is a powerful force that can be a voice of change. Song has been used to unify people, to rally people to work for change, to help us celebrate and rejoice – music is a part of life. I do not want to live is a world were artists cannot push the boundaries, stir up discussion, and sometimes push me to think about things in new ways.
Adam Tweets about his new Album
6.5.11 from Twitter
Adam tweeted some information about his album but none of it was new information. But the message was be patient and expect surprises. Oh, and he debunked the Xtina duet rumor, but we already knew that.

We now have migrated the Adamtopia Dictionary from old ATop to this site.
Thanks to miachihu (AKA Mia) for consolidating the old ATop and my original PF dictionaries into one reference set, then adding in many missing items. The consolidation incorporates the work of many fans and the original actually goes back to March 2009, long before anyone had conceived of Adamtopia.
There are three sections:
1. DICTIONARY (of Adamized words)
2. ADAM-RELATED ACRONYMS OR TERMS
3. STANDARD CHAT, E-MAIL, WEB, TWITTER AND COMMENT SLANG AND ACRONYMS

Voting Opportunities
I have changed my recommendation on VH1 Do Something Awards to DO NOT VOTE
5.27.11 by Q3
On 5.25.11 I recommended voting in this competition. Since then I have done some additional research and testing.
1. Voting for the celebrity online awards is just a way to build awareness for the real awards show.
2, Adam is not nominated for any award. The only way to vote for Adam is as a write-in. It takes much longer to cast a write-in vs. voting for a nominee. There is no limit on voting. So 10 minutes of Adam fan voting time can be wiped out in about 1 minute by someone voting for a nominee.
Poll rating (0=lowest rating, 10=highest rating)
Adam benefit: 3 – a win could raise awareness of The Trevor Project.
Fairness: 3 - there is an attempt to limit voting for just one category but it is very easy to work around.
Potential to win: 9 – The voting structure makes a write-in vote very timeconsuming.
Fan value: 2
RECOMMENDATION – vote only if you are willing to work really hard.
About the awards: DoSomething.org and VH1 have partnered to present The Do Something Awards to honor young people's commitment to social change. VH1 is doing a series of online contests to promote this event – they have nominees but also accept write-ins. One of the celebrity categories could help Adam but, more importantly make a difference.
The category: Charity Song
The write-in: @adamlambert for "Aftermath Remix" and mention the Trevor Project.
You need to sign in on Twitter or Facebook to vote.
Below the SUBMIT button, it says:
“Did we miss your favorite?
NOMINATE YOUR OWN!”
Clink on “NOMINATE YOUR OWN!” and you will get a voting pop-up window.
Link to cast a write-in: www.vh1.com/shows/events/do_something_awards/2011/
Note: If you send a really clever tweet, VH1 may retweet it.
