This is only the second year I watch the show. Do they always have voting for couples instead of individual dancers at this stage? Not sure how this works - do people vote for their favourite single dancer and ignore whoever the partner was? So if lots of people vote for Sasha for example but her partner isn't so hot, then he benefits from her popularity? Am I making any sense? I just finished voting for Sasha/her partner....also didn't realize that you vote for a couple. Her partner is a bit weak - sorry, can't remember his name. Melanie's thighs...hehe...I was absolutely mesmerized by her strong muscular legs - thought they were beautiful and her flexibility was off the hook!

If I recall they will be voted on as a couple for awhile. But they aren't voted off as a couple. They change things around sometimes so I could be all wet ;D I think the judges pick who goes home from the bottom 3 till there are 10 left.

Melanie and Marko were beautiful and Melanie made be believe that she was a statue that had come to life. It was a beautiful awesome performance. The best of the night. My comments were not met to bring Melanie down at all. My comments were based more on my opinion of the shallowness of the dancing industry.

I loved a LOT of those performances. Sasha's emoting was incredible. She made me cry. Her stage presence was amazingly powerful and her dancing was fierce. Melanie and Marko were breathtaking. I've thrown several votes their way because they deserve it. Truly beautiful work and Melanie has been the most memorable for me (other than Sasha, who I was already familiar with and adore), but WOW, I would love it to come down to the two of them.
They are warm, fun, incredible dancers who exude personality and stage presence. <333
Several of the guys I also like, but still can't pull their names out of the blue yet. Marko wasn't one of my favs coming in, but his work with Melanie was stunning.
I thought two of the routines (Urkel jive and Cee-Rex hip-hop) were not strong at all.

The producers (or, they like to make it look like luck of the draw) determine the style of dance for each couple, and the choreographer. As for the voting, to the best of my recollection during the first part, the voting is for couples. The those in the bottom dance for their lives, and the judges pick which one goes home. Once they reach a certain point (the final ten, I think) voting is for individual dancers. I read somewhere that this year there will be couples from the competitors until the top ten. Then, the dancers will be paired with the all-stars, so there will be individual judging. Also, at some point toward the end of the competition, the judges no longer decide who goes home. It becomes a popularity contest solely at that point.

Just read Lyndsey's review.. and it occured to me that all though she was saying things like "underwhelming routine" and "broadway schtick" the contestants aren't doing the choreography themselves.. right? What part of the routines (besides the dancing ) do the contestants contribute? Costumes maybe?

What part of the routines (besides the dancing ) do the contestants contribute? Costumes maybe? Just the dancing and their interpretation. These kids are really at the mercy of their choreographers. However, I have seen the judges "call out" the choreography before as not being as good as it could have been. Last night, I thought the choreography for the Cee Lo Green song stunk! Also, I seriosuly doubt that the BallRoom dancer getting Quick Step and the Broadway kid getting Broadway was not planned. No way was that just chance. I think, as far as dance choice, the producers went a bit easy on them last night. Nigel plays his little games on SYTYCD just as much as he does on Idol.
