Hans Haveron - moving toward the light
The Tribes of Art, June 15, 2011
I recently had the chance to sit down with Hans Haveron, fine artist from West Hollywood. Haveron is another one of the post-modern gypsies who now reside in Southern California. He had just returned from "Lightning In A Bottle", the annual gathering of the tribes that takes place in Silverado, CA.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haveron likes symbolism because he feels it creates doorways for your mind. Certain objects and creatures cause you to think. They are also represent spiritual ideals. Hans considers himself very spiritual, a result of coming through a rough early life and emerging on the other side intact physical, emotionally and psychologically.
The most profound story he shared with me in regards to symbolism was the explanation of his painting "Sepia's Secret". Recently pop-rocker Adam Lambert chose an element from the painting as inspiration for his latest tattoo. The painting had existed for a while and Lambert has now purchased it. In "Sepia's Secret" there is the female "goddess", her cloak outstretched to protect two children, symbols of innocence and counterpoint to the ego. They hold a large key. Above the goddess is the all-seeing eye of the universe, with its keyhole shaped pupil.
The point of the story is that the child holds the key to unlock the wisdom of the universe. Therefore all of us but especially artists of all types must always make sure the child is present. The most difficult part of being an artist is the battle against the ego to let the child prevail so the art can be made. The child is the creator. If the ego gets too big, the child dies and so will your art. It was after Adam learned this story that he chose the key for his growing collection of body art. His previous tattoos, the eye of Horus and the infinity symbol also have very specific meanings to the musician.
Hans says Adam's choice makes complete sense as he does an amazing job of keeping his ego in check and calling on his child to create. He is a pure spirit who loves helping his friends. As for Lambert's art, despite his success he won't settle for less than his best.
Lambert shared the tattoo via Twitter and included a mention of Hans' inspiration. Word traveled fast and Haveron found himself talking to the head of ICM, an agency that represents actors such as Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, who congratulated him for having his art being chosen. This is the first time, that he is aware of, that someone has had any of his work inked on themselves.
Hans and I would like to extend a very special thank you to Adam for giving permission to publish the tattoo/painting story. There were no Adam questions in my prepared list as I wanted this interview to be about Hans. The story was part of his spontaneous response to the question about symbolism. We agreed that I would not include it though unless Adam was ok with it as he has not spoken about it to the press previously. I'd also like to give a huge thank you to Hans for giving me the photo of he and Adam. I ask all readers to direct others to come here to view it, rather than copying and pasting it all over the internet.

VH1 Behind the Music promo starts
Adam Lambert to be Featured in New Season of VH1's 'Behind the Music'
Broadway World, Thursday, June 16, 2011
VH1's iconic "Behind the Music" series is back for its 11th season and according to the NY Post, some changes are in store for the long running series. While still underscored by that tug-at-the-heartstrings melodrama that's made it a pop-culture touchstone, "Behind the Music" will no longer focus solely on documenting an aging musician's rise, fall and redemption. Although the series is known for tragic stories like Leif Garrett's, "Behind the Music" is changing its focus and profiling new stars like Adam Lambert.
"We are still looking for triumph and heartache, just a different kind of triumph and heartache," says "Behind the Music" executive producer, Stephen Mintz. "We're still looking for compelling stories that include good music so I think there's now certainly an emphasis on current and relevant artists."
Season 11, which kicks off June 29, will feature episodes on Missy Elliott, Ice Cube, Miranda Lambert, Enrique Iglesias and Adam Lambert. Ricky Martin and Mary J. Blige both get their second, completely re-done "BTM" episodes. "The first episode we did with Mary J. Blige was 10 years ago, and hasn't aired in seven years, and a lot has happened in her life since then," he says. "And Ricky's first episode was done before he came out. This one is told from a completely different vantage point."
That doesn't mean that "BTM" has totally abandoned its weepy, triumphing-over-adversity roots.
"Every story doesn't have to have drugs and alcohol and whatnot," Mintz says. "When a show is done right, it feels like a cathartic experience to the artist. They get to look back on their life and talk about the obstacles and journeys they experienced, and people can relate to that."

Changing tunes
Aging rockers need not apply: 'BTM' is back and younger -- but you still need a good story

VH1's iconic "Behind the Music" series is back for its 11th season -- different in some ways, but still underscored by that tug-at-the-heartstrings melodrama that's made it a pop-culture touchstone.
"Behind the Music" no longer focuses solely on documenting an aging musician's rise, fall and redemption -- think former teen idol Leif Garrett, whose on-camera "BTM" reunion with an ex-pal paralyzed after a drug-addled Garrett crashed their car is the show's most famous episode.
Those types of "BTM" episodes earned the show two classic lampoonings on "Saturday Night Live," which paid homage with "Fat Albert: Behind the Music" -- and constructed its classic "More Cowbell!" sketch (Will Ferrell, Christopher Walken) around a faux "BTM" episode about Blue Oyster Cult.
"We are still looking for triumph and heartache, just a different kind of triumph and heartache," says "Behind the Music" executive producer, Stephen Mintz.
"We're still looking for compelling stories that include triumph and heartache and, quite frankly, good music -- so I think there's now certainly an emphasis on current and relevant artists."
Season 11, which kicks off June 29, will feature episodes on Missy Elliott, Ice Cube, Miranda Lambert, Enrique Iglesias and Adam Lambert; Ricky Martin and Mary J. Blige both get their second, completely re-done "BTM" episodes.
"When we brought the series back a few years ago, the idea was to focus on classic and iconic artists we didn't cover the first time around, like Ice Cube," says Mintz.
"We wanted to break free from the traditional story arc of a 30-year career, signing a bad contract, getting lost in the world of drugs and showing up 30 years later with a new hit song.
"Missy Elliott's story is right in the middle. We felt she's an iconic artist. Her career speaks for itself, but she's had her share of obstacles she's overcome."
"She talks candidly about battling Grave's disease and about being molested as a child. Hers wasn't the traditional ['Behind the Music'] story arc where her career ever got washed up.
"But I think the strength of the series, both currently and in the past, is all about overcoming obstacles," Mintz says.
"When a show is done right, it feels like a cathartic experience to the artist. They get to look back on their life and talk about the obstacles and journeys they experienced -- and people can relate to that."

Out and Proud Celebs
US Magazine June 16, 2011
In honor of Gay Pride Month, Us Weekly salutes stars like Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres and Chris Colfer for their work in the LGBT community.
Other notable stars who made headlines when they publicly came out of the closet include American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert, financial guru Suze Orman and *NYSNC singer Lance Bass.
"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," Lambert, 29, told Rolling Stone in 2009. "I'm proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It's just another part of me."

GLAAD’s Issues and Criticism continues
Washington Blade By Phil Reese on June 16, 2011
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation raised eyebrows last week when the media watchdog group released a statement supporting the merger of telecom giants AT&T and T-Mobile. It marked the second time the organization, which was founded in 1985 as a grassroots action network, had weighed in on major business news. The prior statement had been released a year earlier objecting to the NBC-Comcast merger, due to concerns about negative portrayals of LGBT characters in the media.
The AT&T statement was curious, but attracted little media attention.
That changed on Tuesday, when former GLAAD board of directors co-chair Laurie Perper appeared on Michelangelo Signorile’s Sirius-XM OutQ show to sound the alarm on other alleged improprieties at the organization and questions facing its leader, Jarrett Barrios.
Since then, Barrios — who has been at the helm of GLAAD for 23 months — has granted a flurry of interviews to counter Perper’s claims. His responses, however, have only served to attract more scrutiny of the organization.
While speaking with Perper, Signorile pressed about why she left her position as board chair early. “You stepped down because you just thought he was not qualified. Obviously, as the months went on, others agreed with that assessment,” Signorile summarized. “I believe that over 14 board members have left, [since Barrios took over],” Perper relayed to the radio host.
Signorile continued, “Is it fair to say that most of these people stepped down because of the direction the organization was going, because of Jarrett Barrios?”
“Absolutely,” Perper said.
Reached by phone last week along with GLAAD director of communications Richard Ferraro and GLAAD board member and Florida PR consultant Gary Bitner, Barrios insisted that his short time working with Perper — only five months — was marked by a positive working relationship, and was focused on solving the organization’s financial problems.
………………………………
Perper also believes a narrower focus would help GLAAD recover.
“I think that they’ve expanded their programmatic work too much and therefore don’t have a solid impact in any one area, so I think they need to retract a little bit in this difficult economy, decide where they want to make an impact, and truly come out with thoughtful statements, rather than the flip-flopping I’ve seen them do with Adam Lambert, with the AT&T situation. … So they just need a consistent message and vision that they can put forth, that people can understand, and then they need to act on it as hard as they can.”

Voting Opportunities
I have changed my recommendation on VH1 Do Something Awards to DO NOT VOTE
5.27.11 by Q3
On 5.25.11 I recommended voting in this competition. Since then I have done some additional research and testing.
1. Voting for the celebrity online awards is just a way to build awareness for the real awards show.
2, Adam is not nominated for any award. The only way to vote for Adam is as a write-in. It takes much longer to cast a write-in vs. voting for a nominee. There is no limit on voting. So 10 minutes of Adam fan voting time can be wiped out in about 1 minute by someone voting for a nominee.
Poll rating (0=lowest rating, 10=highest rating)
Adam benefit: 3 ¨C a win could raise awareness of The Trevor Project.
Fairness: 3 - there is an attempt to limit voting for just one category but it is very easy to work around.
Potential to win: 9 ¨C The voting structure makes a write-in vote very timeconsuming.
Fan value: 2
RECOMMENDATION ¨C vote only if you are willing to work really hard.
About the awards: DoSomething.org and VH1 have partnered to present The Do Something Awards to honor young people's commitment to social change. VH1 is doing a series of online contests to promote this event ¨C they have nominees but also accept write-ins. One of the celebrity categories could help Adam but, more importantly make a difference.
The category: Charity Song
The write-in: @adamlambert for "Aftermath Remix" and mention the Trevor Project.
You need to sign in on Twitter or Facebook to vote.
Below the SUBMIT button, it says:
