Adam takes a stand against violence and guns --
I think we should all take a stand too.

I generally avoid politics on this forum. And while this is a post about what has been made a political issue -- rejecting violence and hate is not something that should be left to politicians. It it not political, it is essential that we start to change how we think and feel about this.
I am not against people having and using guns. I am against some people having and using guns. I am mostly against hate -- no matter who the hater is, no matter what he or she wears.

Adam has already expressed his support for gun control on Twitter and by signing Billboard magazine's petition gun violence. He was also one of the 24 artists featured on "Hands" -- a recording to raise money for victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre.
But in the wake of continued needless killings in the US, Adam posted two statements on Instagram addressing the issue:
ALL LIVES CAN'T MATTER UNTIL BLACK LIVES MATTER
adamlambert#blacklivesmatter. For all of u who totally miss the point of this movement, the GOAL is for all lives to matter equally. But As it stands, racism is preventing us from that ideal. We must Fix the reality so we can grow toward hope.

I am against police brutality.
I am against the killing of cops.
These are NOT contradictory.
We need to end the epidemic of senseless gun violence in America PERIOD.
adamlambertSo true. #guncontrol

I am pleased that Adam has renewed his call for gun control. I am pleased that so many other artists who have remained on the sidelines have made statements about the need for gun control.

Earlier this week, I returned home to Tupelo, MS -- a city that is dealing with two separate incidents of police killing of black men as part of routine traffic stops. The New York Times sent a reporter here.
TUPELO, Miss. — The blue lights flashed in the rearview mirror of the Ford Focus. The man behind the wheel, a 37-year-old African-American, pulled over, opened the door and sprinted into the Mississippi night.
Soon, a white police officer was giving chase on foot, accompanied by his police dog.
The officer would eventually find and fatally shoot the man, Antwun Shumpert, here on the evening of June 18, plunging this small city — famous globally as the birthplace of Elvis Presley, but known regionally as a beacon of relatively progressive racial attitudes — into what has become a tragically common American morass of anger, racial division and hard questions about the treatment of black men at the hands of the police.

The details of this incident are not clear. The investigation is underway.
But even without knowing what exactly happened, my hometown is truly being ripped apart -- and people seems to be torn between sadness and seeking someone to blame. We have a big problem.

We all have heard the stats...
So far this year, 509 people have been killed by police in the US. That is more than 2 people a day, every day.
So far this year, 26 police officers have been killed by gunfire.
Every day in America, 48 children and teens are shot and 7 die in murders, assaults, suicides & suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention.
Every day in America, 297 people are shot in murders, assaults, suicides & suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention.
Every day in America, 89 people die from gun violence:
31 are murdered
55 kill themselves
2 are killed unintentionally
1 is killed by police intervention
1 intent unknown.
We have a big problem -- and it is time to fix it.
But these stats are NOT the entire story. For every death, there are families and friends left without the people they love. For every death, there is a community of people affected.

I will leave the big, grand plans to others. But I will not be helpless. So perhaps we can start with universal background checks?
Millions of guns are sold every year in “no questions asked” transactions. Experts estimate that 40% of guns now sold in America are done so without a background check. Why is it an estimate? Because there is very limited information collected about gun sales in the US.
Between 2006 and 2015, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System denied 89,000 individuals with misdemeanor domestic violence convictions or restraining orders from purchasing a firearm, according to the report. But in 23 percent of those cases, the FBI was unable to complete the background check within three business days, the time the agency is allotted under federal law. These sales were allowed to go through under the “default proceed” rule. As a result, in 6,780 cases, a convicted domestic abuser left a dealer with a gun. And before you think this is not a big deal, many people who should not get guns fall into this loophole. For example, Dylann Roof bought a Glock after the FBI was unable to complete his background check within the three-day limit -- he would not have been approved due to a drug conviction IF they had completed the background check. He went on to slaughter 9 people in a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
There is no simple solution to this problem -- it will require changes in our culture, gun laws and the gun industry. It will take decades to fix this. But we need to start -- and one place to start is by demanding mandatory, universal background checks before a gun is purchased.
