I noticed on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" they introduced their first gay character today. This soap has been on TV for like 40 years and I've never seen them do that before. Baby steps people... WTF??? "Days of Our Lives" hasn't had a gay character this entire time? And we've been kicking ABC's ass for two full years? ABC soaps have had gay/bi/transgendered characters and storylines dating back YEARS. Bianca (Eric Kane's daughter) came out probably eight years ago. (Correction: looked it up; 11 years ago.) That later segued into a storyline about a transgendered rock star (he was already famous, but could no longer endure living as a man and he began to transition – it was handled very well, actually), then there was Fish and Kyle ("One Life to Live") had the first daytime M/M love scene, including kiss, two years ago, but there have been minor storylines with gay characters on soaps for years on "As the World Turns" (CBS) and I'm sure "General Hospital," but I'm drawing a blank. As The World Turns had a gay character in 1988--it was the first soap to do so. There was no relationship shown, only alluded to. The character, Hank, mentioned his partner Charles several times. Then in June 2007, Luke, the teenaged son of one of the show's longtime leading ladies, met and fell in love with Noah, another teen boy. They had soap's first ever gay male kiss in August 2007, which was viewed on YouTube over two million times. Luke and Noah (or "Nuke" as they were nicknamed) were named by viewers as Soap Opera Digest's favorite couple for many weeks. They were never shown in bed together but they did kiss numerous times throughout the rest of their relationship until they broke up and Luke became involved with Dr. Reid Oliver, with whom he also shared kisses. Like you, I can't believe that Days of Our Lives is just now introducing a gay character. Get with the program, DOOL!

I don't know if this would be classified as an "empowerment" song, but when I hear Elvis sing "If I Can Dream" I feel a sense of love and brotherhood and yearning that touches my very being and lights a fire in my heart to strive to do more, and better, and that to me is empowerment. I would love to hear Adam sing this song even just one time.

Haven't heard it for a while - I seem to listen exclusively to Adam now - but since you've reminded me how good it is, I'll go get my ipod and enjoy it again.

On the topic of "gay songs" -- sometimes song can take on new meaning -- never thought of by the songwriter. One example is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".
