The magazine also seemed to me to completely miss the point of what is so new and groundbreaking (and cause-advancing) about Adam (and, for example, about the Details photoshoot), which is that he is mainstream, that he does appeal to straight women (and straight men, for that matter), that he isn't just a movement hero but a legit pop star as well, and that he has achieved this "mainstream" success without in anyway toning down his sexuality (both in the sense of his "gayness" and in the sense of his aggressive sexiness) or his queerness (again, both in the sense of his "gayness" and his more general happiness to be bizarre and off-center). And he's not just a mainstream success--he's a mainstream sex-symbol--at once (to borrow from both Adam and Kathy Griffin at the EQ awards) "a weird fucking fag" and "a dreamboat." That's pretty groundbreaking progress if you ask me--entirely unprecedented. (But perhaps it is not progress of the kind that someone whose feelings about women are as transparent as "six-foot-Barbie" Hicklin's are has it in him to appreciate : >:(
Yes to all you wrote, MWP, and I especially love this part. I had edited out of my already too-long essay something similar but not as well-articulated. I do think that it is a complete mindfuck to many men that women find Adam sexually attractive. Not only do they not understand, but many seem to find it somehow personally threatening. I really, truly do NOT get it, and would honestly love someone to figure this out. This isn't just about Adam, because the way that straight men feel about gay men explains a lot of things, from why straight PDs have sometimes been reluctant to embrace Adam's music to why hate crimes against gay men happen. I think the answer is rooted in the most basic of human drives/biology. We talk so much about societal attittudes and moving toward acceptance, but I also think something much more basic is involved here.
I think the people who are scared of Adam are those that believe being gay is a choice and not the way you are born. Anyone with any common sense knows that it is not a choice. Unfortunately, there are millions of men and women (who indoctrinate their children) that are not smart enough to get the latest facts and findings regarding sexuality. There are religious people who will only believe what they think the Bible and/or their religion tells them. They refuse to accept any scientific truths. Adam appeals to straight men and women who understand that people are born with their sexuality. Who even thinks "gay" anymore about Adam. We are so enamoured with his talent and his charm, that is all we see. My husband loves Adam. I love Adam. Forty-six years of marriage tells me my husband isn't gay so there is no reason for him to fear Adam. I don't know what we are going to do with those people who are so blind. I try to be kind and understanding of them, but it is so hard.

I loved Stoinfinity’s post because I spent the last hour or so watching the River Rock videos and I remember so clearly how at the time I analyzed every move he made and worried if it was “too gay” and if it was going to impact his career. I was so invested that the thought of him not being successful broke my heart. Now I can laugh no matter what he does because he really has earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants and be whoever he wants and if people can’t accept it, their loss. It’s all about respect and Adam has gained that from so many quarters. OMG, I know. I had my daughter-in-law with me at Fantasy Springs and when he came onto the stage in his feather collared "bed jacket" I was afraid she was going to freak out - but she was pretty cool. Actually, we had a really good time and she's a fan - not a stan - but a good solid fan.

LambritsUK the lambrits RT @kathryn17: National Cadet Corp Precision Drill Squad performance to IIHY by Adam Lambert in Singapore!! So cute! www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4DjcfeNL0wThe Singapore drill squads really like him. This is from a Chinese Girls school in Singapore. Also set to IIHY. I'm wondering if they are picking IIHY because it's a single and as such familiar to people (I'm assuming IIHY was a single in Singapore, forgive my memory) or if it's picked because of it's lyrics. The "it's a fine line between the dark side and the light side" is kind of a stark message when jutoxposed with military uniforms and guns.

I think it's ironic that people are snide about Adam and his female fans when gay guys are falling all over straight women pop stars. Okay, stepping off now. I love this remark. I think you should keep your soap box handy. This is that interview Adam did with Larry Flick that He got pissed off at the #glamberts for uploading to youtube because He only wanted people that listened to His radio show to hear. In the beginning of the second interview Adam talks about having more female fans than male fans. At about the 5 minute mark Adam talks about the Out Mag thing.

Just wanted to say as a new member of this forum that I just spent 30 minutes reading everything from today and it was very enlightening. I hadn't become a fan yet at the time of the Out magazine incident, but first saw Adam at the AMAs. So very interesting background that I am quite sure contributed to what happened at the AMAs. We've all come a long way since then, and I sure hope it all works out this time.
And Gelly, I almost died from the silly string photos. Thanks!

Just took a (very) quick spin through today's thread and my thoughts (not worth a farthing but here they are none-the-less)...
Adam bedding - umm just not. Didn't even like character bedding as a child. Hicklin gate of yesteryear - guy behaved like slime. Was summarily slapped by Adam and fans for his sliminess. If he didn't learn his lesson and returns to his slimy ways then he will get what he gets. Adam isn't a new kid on the block anymore and while he may not have the respect of all the GLBT community he has plenty of respect amongst very established stars and industry players - sure hope Hicklin would be stupid enough to take on the music industry, he is editor of a niche magazine that needs the cooperation of the straight community for much of what it does.
But then an evil little part of me would love to see him try it and feel the wrath of music industry luminaries rain down upon his head... I can see the tweets now.

I thought Bamafan's was a long body pillow. Am I wrong? Does anyone have the photo? It's just a regular size pillow.

Gosh I miss Adam. Sometimes I feel like I did when I was a teen. You know waiting by the phone for that special someone to call.. Only now it's Adam and Twitter. Sigh
