More about YouTube view count gaming. We know it happens and here is the most famous example -- Avril Lavigne: www.wired.com/listening_post/2008/07/avril-lavigne-a/Avril, even with gaming with viewer bots, took 2 years to hit 100 million views. Susan Boyle took about a week to do it. I have always been skeptical of the overnight YouTube sensation SuBo. It appears to have been manufactured to me. And then people jumped on board. Are SuBo's 60+ year old fans really the kind of people who were hanging out online seeking the latest YouTube video? Makes no sense to me. The biggest question of the entire SuBo "phenomenon" is why was this video not monetized with ads? Why did Simon and Sony leave so much money on the table? My bet is because a lot of those views were not real views and they did not want any advertiser to discover it. (And like with Avril, they would have.) From Wired ---- Sorry to be a skeptic -- but I do not believe that they could not agree how to share revenue so just walked away from all of it. This is Simon Cowell -- no Mother Teresa!. Link to article: www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/04/susan-boyle-nev/In any case, the moral to this story is -- YouTube view count does now mean that there were actually that many viewers or maybe even views. Wow, that is interesting!! 100 million views in nine days, coupled with the active nature of the viewer (since they have to actually seek it out), as opposed to the passive viewer of most ads, would make it the reach equivalent of a Super Bowl commercial. And yet they did nothing to monetize? Hmmm. I believe the question was also raised about whether or not Simon was truly surprised by SuBo as there were indications that he knew exactly how well she could sing and the audition was carefully planned to produce the precise effect that it had. Don't know how much of that was true.

Q3, just had a quick question for you. I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I've been thinking about this since the news that Archuleta's been dropped broke. It's been reported that Archuleta had a 3 album deal and that now he's fulfilled it, he wasn't so much dropped as that the contract wasn't re-upped. From what I read, the assumption has been that Adam has a 5 album deal. Do you have any thoughts on this? I in no way believe that Archuleta and Adam are similar, other than both having been runner ups, but it does make me worry a little that labels have such short memories. I'm surprised that Jordin's getting a 3rd album, though I know she has an international presence. And Q3? Thank you SO MUCH for finding another home for us!!! What an incredible amount of work when you're so busy starting another job. I don't know how you do it! I don't post much but believe me, I'm always thankful for you and your insightful comments, and all the other wonderful posters here! Love you all! Did you check in yesterday and see all your BD wishes?! :D

Talking about sexy Adam and giving us what we want. This vid has stuck in my mind. IMO its one of his sexiest Bowie medley performances. Watch what happens at 1.30 the woman if front him keeps repeating in a hilarious way OMFG, OMFG, OMFG (not blaming her, i love her) and i think Adam understands what is going on and instead of doing his rutine move with bumping his fist to his thigh, at 1.39 he's doing something with his fingers sliding down his mmm thigh and that causes another multiple OMFG from the woman. And then this whole performance is super sexy with lots of heavy breathing and moves that cause a delirium from the audience.

I haven't finished reading today's thread quite yet. I do have something I want to comment on and this is my opinion as a member, not a mod. It was pretty clear to me when I read yesterday's thread last night that for some people the fan fic conversation was going over like a lead balloon. I'm not a fan fic reader, when I'm in the mood to read I go find more traditional reading material. That being said, I have no problems with that sort of conversation here. It's within the guidlines and obviously of interest to some people. Scroll is my friend. I'm not particularly interested in disecting Adam's personal life but I would never make a post along the lines of..... "You are talking about that again?" I would hope that any topic that relates to Adam is acceptable. [glow=red,2,300]HAPPY BIRTHDAY NEEDACOKE!![/glow] Even though people don't actually make money off fan fic, it does seem to me a little different than so-called shipping. To me, it feels too much like ripping off Adam's (Tommy's, whoever's) image and persona and then manipulating those images and personas in ways that they have no control over. Although I've read some (and some are really hot, frankly), I can't help but think it's somehow not "fair" 'cuz a big part of what makes it hot is that it's "featuring" Adam, Tommy, whoever - and they are the ones who created their own cachet, etc. - the fan fic writers didn't. Which is why it's just a little "squicky" (is that the word?) to me, in a way that "shiipping" - being interested in Adam's love life the way people just are and always have been in interested in stars' love lives - is not as uncomfortable seeming to me. And, then, if those "characters" are being portrayed in ways that Adam, Tommy, whoever might not want to be portrayed . . . ? (And, if it's stuff about fictional characters, doesn't that infringe on the property/intellectual rights of the people who created those characters? Shouldn't writers come up with their own characters? - I'm just thinking/pixilating out loud here - I'm sure all these thoughts have already been expressed/thought through elsewhere.) So, anyway, yeah - I read AND scrolled last night - and now I'm just trying to understand my own feelings about those topics, shipping and fan fic.

I was just going to take a fast look here before I went to church, now I'm not going because I can't leave. NoAngel, I always love your Sunday posts, but I literally have tears running down my cheeks, seriously, from laughing at the truth of your article. I have discussed it with a friend and tried to explain the quality of the Adamtopians compared to other fandoms and the lengths they go to to ferret out any and all Adamfacts. All the deep, introspective posts are fine but I'm just not an angsty person so to me all the "oh no's" and "what if's" is background noise. Just as I do in my own life, I assume things will work out. It's been a while since I've had to write articles or papers but I still remember all the digging and delving, before computers made the search a little easier, and I wish I had a few of you on speed dial at the time. About Q3's question/answers on why Adam is so sexy, hmmmm. I have spent a lot of time pondering that question. I am married to a musician so I know one major factor is it is just sexy to see him playing on a stage with other people screaming for him. In Adam's case I concur that one of the sexiest things is that he just owns himself, attitude, talent, and lifestyle. Add to that his more humble moments like during Idol when one of the judges made a really complimentary statement and he either got overwhelmed (Paula-BLACK OR WHITE) or thrilled ( Simon-TRACKS OF MY TEARS.) Finally, he is a handsome, long-legged, strutting, confident mf'er when he is on stage, again owning it and doing whatever the hell he wants then grinning at the audience to let them know it's for them. The idiot muscleman from JERSEY SHORE telling you he is sexy is totally a turnoff to me. Adam smiling and his eyes saying, "Did you like that?" OMG! Everyone has a different taste when it comes to the opposite sex, some preferring safety and comfort, others, like me, like them just a little dangerous and unpredictable. Adam gives us both vibes, sweet, nice mama's boy in interviews and in real life, too but considering all the comments and scenarios about his vacation with Sauli, also the edgy, sexy, anything goes bad boy. If I spent half as much time pondering real life issues - well never mind, this is more fun. I love your post! This is exactly how I feel, and I think that is why he gets sexier to me all the time.

That woman repeating OMFG is so genuinly impressed by Adam's moves ...... Cannot wait for the tour # 3 .... sigh ....

Good morning everyone! It is rainy and dreary here today and it is making it very hard for me to get my weekend chores done - I just want to curl up with my computer! I hadn't heard the 100 million views in 9 days for SuBo before, but that just seems ridiculous. For one thing, it isn't something one would watch over and over and over (19+ times ) Anecdotal evidence: My husband was sent a link to it by a coworker (a 20-something guy who always knows the latest viral videos) He watched it 1 time at work. When he came home, he showed it to me. Our son walked in during it and asked what it was, so we played it once again for him. Total of 3 views for 3 people. Even if the average was actually 2 or 3 views per person, that is still 33-50 MILLION people who watched it - are there even that many people with decent broadband internet connection who could have watched it? This was nearly 2 years ago wasn't it, so broadband wasn't as pervasive. I sure as hell wouldn't have bothered to watch youtube on dialup! And certainly not everyone with a broadband connection DID watch it - I know my parents (late 60's) did not. The other way to look at it is that 100 million views in 9 days would be about 7700 views per minute. Those would have to be unique views since you wouldn't be watching it more than once at the same time. So 7700 unique people were actively going to youtube to view it - seems pretty damn unlikely to me. I'm glad to know this - I will put a LOT less faith in Youtube stats from now on! ETA: Just did a little quick online research. Looks like there were 81 million broadband subscribers in the USA in December 2009. I assume youtube counts are worldwide - the next largest is Japan with 31 million subscribers. Doing some quick addition on the info I found, there was around 300 million subscribers worldwide. I STILL think it is unlikely that 15 - 30% of ALL subscribers worldwide watched that video - for one thing, is there much intrest in SuBo in the non-English speaking countries? If we assume it was mostly watched by native English speakers, the total potential audience is much smaller - about 110 million and at least 25% (assuming 3 views per person) would have to have watched it. Sorry for all the numbers! This just caught my interest ....
