Just got home. Kiddie is fine. Was playing outside with her friends during the earthquake and they all thought the ground jumping up and down was fun and they apparently jumped up and down with it. I'm not so happy. Shaking lasted nearly a minute with stuff falling off the walls. Initially I though there was just really heavy equipment moving a floor above me, but when the windows literally started shaking I just got the hell out. Was even worse in the floors above mine. Roads are crawling. A spire at National Catherdral has broken off, and the Capitol Building is reportably being checked for cracks. Apparently there's been damage to other churches and a few schools. We aren't California. Buildings aren't built to earthquake codes here. Glad to hear you're home and your daughter is ok. Have you felt any aftershocks? Do you have to work tomorrow? Maybe you can be home while they inspect for damage?

I hope everyone is safe and hopefully there won't be any aftershocks. Coming from earthquake land (currently in LA, growing up in Japan and Bay Area), initially I thought - 5.8, not a biggie here but must feel pretty scary if you are not used to it. Then I found the following article when I was looking at the news: www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/23/scitech/main20096181.shtmlWhat is says that the ground is much harder in the east coast compared to the west and other frequent earthquake areas. What that means is that you don't frequent earthquakes, but when you do, they feel much harder, and travels farther. So the 5.8 must have been much stronger than what we experience here! The other thought I had, was everyone rushing outside of the building. I wondered if this was due to 9/11, that everyone thought immediately about a terrorist attack rather than an earthquake. If I were there, I think I may do the same, not wanting to be trapped in a building. However, one of the things that I was told growing up in earthquake areas is NOT to run outside immediately. Debris from buildings (signs, glass windows, facade, etc) could cause just as much damage. Look for immediate cover, then think about securing an exit. As I said, I hope everyone is safe!

Hoppers
glad the kids didn't understand what was going on. Sadly I know what you mean about the earthquake since I felt it more than once with heavy stuff falling from tables and walls and even more than that :-/

That's interesting. I lived in SoCal for almost 13 years and in that time there were a few quakes that broke some cups and dishes etc... But, I swear, this one was really intense. I felt it through my whole body - *blech* weird! Anyhow, I'm grateful for the distraction of Atop and all the gorgeous photographs. Thanks and keep 'em coming!

We felt the earthquake here on Long Island. I know sugaree said she didn't, but I'm further east. I was at work and my chair started swaying. Everything got quiet and everyone had a look of WTF? on their faces. Then someone yelled from their office "Am I the only one who's shaking?" Everyone collectively said "NO!" We're all fine and no damage was done. Weird. Never experienced that before.

According to the Washington Post, Virginia has only had 25 recorded earthquakes since it became a state....which I believe was in 1783. Last big quake was apparently a 4.8 in 1875. The radio is now saying today's quake was a 6.0. We're really not used to earthquakes here in the DC area!

He speaks English in a few of the Tutka videos, for a short time. I didn't save any of them but maybe someone who did can find one for you, murly. ETA: Found one! Murly if you've never watched one, this one is pretty adorable. He speaks English at 8:18 but not sure if it's a fair sample since he is being very silly and accepting his Oscar! He and Katri are so cute together. I hope they can continue their Tutka shows. OMG! TY, TY TY. I am tearing up. I have waited so long to hear Sauli speak English. So adorable. I just wish someone would tape a coversation or interview with him in English. He said he reads our comments---every one. Surely, he has read the ones that say PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH for us.

Had to pause the video to go do something. This is where it froze, so I couldn't resist a screen shot! :D
