OT. I remember earlier, around the time that OoL debuted, either on this blog or another, where we were talking about cliched/bad lyrics in songs and compared and contrasted them with some of the songs that Adam has written, and saying that he was not as good of a songwriter etc.. And was just listening to radio, and Moves like Jagger came on, dont' know if it's just me but that song seems to be littered with cliche lyrics, and even though I love Adele's Someone Like You, it has it's share of a few cliched lyrics in there too, I think part of the reason that makes us forget the cliche, or wash over them, is because of how they are sung, or the melody or something. Wasn't me. I think Adam holds his own quite well as a songwriter. Sure, we all have growing pains. Every professional writer does. But the only way to improve is to have the guts to write and keep writing. And understand who and what you are writing for. Just about all lyrics taken out of context can sound cheesy. Pjd wrote a great post about it. And Chunkey has written more than a few hilar ones. I mean, Burt Bacharach and Hal David have won every award in the book and are in the songwriting Hall of Fame. This song won an Oscar and is in the Billboard Top 100 Songs of All Time: Raindrops keep fallin' on my head And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed Nothin' seems to fit Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin' So I just did me some talkin' to the sun And I said I didn't like the way he got things done Sleepin' on the job Those raindrops are fallin' on my head, they keep fallin' But there's one thing I know The blues they send to meet me won't defeat me It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me Raindrops keep fallin' on my head But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red Cryin's not for me 'Cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin' Because I'm free Nothin's worryin' me So yeah, before people start classifying Adam's ability as a songwriter, they might learn a little about the discipline.

Oh and I agree with this too! I must say I get a little annoyed with the meme that Adam writes cheesy lyrics etc... Have people listened to what is out there?! I think Broken Open has beautiful lyrics and DTRH is lulzy but ya know what? I LOVE it. I think OOL is honest and beautiful. I mentioned a few days ago that if Adam just tweeted the lyrics "soaked to the bone, sink like a stone, walk home alone" before we heard Soaked, the fandom would have collectively face-palmed. Those lyrics sound completely juvenile and pedestrian on their own. It's the way Adam interprets them that makes them poignant and meaningful, IMO.

What would I like to hear Adam sing? The very first thing that came to mind was "Time To Say Goodbye" in Italian, English alone or a duet - I don't even care. Or "Danny Boy". Love me a good classic tenor. Cassie and PJD - I sent you a PM.

OK, there are TONS of songs I'd like to hear Adam sing if we were to totally ignore his interests! I really want to hear him sing a classical aria - preferably Oratorio since I prefer that to Opera - but I would take nearly anything. How about "Sound an Alarm" from Handel's Judas Maccabeus (has the advantage of being more Jewish than Christian!) Or "If with All Your Hearts" from Mendelson's Elijah? For those not familiar with Oratorios (think long works with choir & soloist - best known 1 is Messiah), each of these recordings starts with a recititive (the singer is advancing the "story" by singing something similar to narration) and then moves directly into the aria. Warning - If with All Your Hearts is an ear worm Thanks for posting. Oh, yes, Adam could so sing those, and sing them well. His voice could fit perfectly, with surprisingly little change in technique. I know it is not most people's cuppa, (and not his either), but he certainly would blow some minds if he ever did sing something like this. Ok, folks, I was holding off for this thread, but pjd - you braved it, so I am posting my "current" favorite for Adam: this is Juan Diego Florez in Donizetti's La Fille du Regiment, a portion of "Ah mes amis" Actually, my dream is - Adam does the whole opera. It is perfect for him - it's a delightful comic opera, it has those coveted high C's and he could sing with Natalie Dessay(!)... I heard it last season (2010) at the Met and Adam spoiled it for me - I was imagining him singing instead of Florez ( a sin on my part, Florez is one of the best tenors of today). BTW - Florez had to repeat this aria, because the audience went totally wild and would not stop yelling for encore.

PS. I am loving Foster the People and Parlotones. Thanks!
