I am always amazed at the amount of visual evidence of Adam before idol, wich begs the question how did he not get discovered in the many years before? Especially since he lived right there in the middle of it all. It's not like his talent just happened in the last two years. Surely he must have been noticed by someone!
I've wondered the same thing since I first saw/heard him. Think it's a combination of things. And as Adam says, "No one really gets discovered anymore." (Though after seeing that Dev video, I have to wonder ...)
There are many who insist it's because he was openly gay and I definitely think that has a lot to do with why he hadn't been signed to a major label, even though he obviously has the voice, looks, stage presence and charisma.
I think the primary issue may have been his shift in focus late in the game. He was so busy trying to make a living in musical theater that he may not have realized his passion for it had waned. Then when The Citizen Vein came along, they were still trying to find their sound, build a base of originals, etc. while Adam was in "Wicked" and Monte was touring with Madonna. Adam even said they only did a few gigs. Then with his other more poppy originals, he was trying to find his own sound/identity and that was still in the growing phases.
The fact that Adam is so good at so many things can be a blessing and a curse, especially when you're trying to make a living as an artist in Hollywood. You have to go where the paying gigs take you and doing eight shows a week makes it really difficult to pursue other interests. You're exhausted, probably having fun and making ends meet, so it's tough not to claim your downtime as your downtime.
What baffled me is how he didn't get the lead roles in the theater productions. I remember one of the first things I read when I first started googling him (I think after TOMT) was on Broadway.com and they were talking to other musical theater actors who had worked with him in the past.
According to the comments, he was known then as an unbelievable singer, even among the best theater singers out there. One person told the story about how they were supposed to meet him and work together. Someone asked, "Have you heard him yet?" First person: "No." Second person: (Something to the effect of) "You are going to be blown away."
Someone else talked about hearing him through the walls of a rehearsal hall for the first time and saying, "Who the hell is THAT?"
A well known casting director, Bernard Telsey, cast Adam in WICKED and there is an article where he talks about Adam and his reasons for casting Adam as the understudy. As someone who has worked in theater and know many incredible actors who do not get the leading roles, i think this is the bottom line.
"Bernard Telsey, who helped to cast Wicked and remembers auditioning Lambert for the musical, noted that Adam had an amazing voice and was a real theater guy. He stated that Lambert’s voice was more like an instrument due to his incredible range.
Telsey, who has cast Hairspray, Rent, and South Pacific, among other Broadway musicals, says he remembers Lambert as a guy with the highest range. He noted that he was always on the look out for ensemble cast members with vocal power and great vocal range. He said ensembles only have a small number of voices so having that kind of sound is important. It makes the show seem like it has more people in it. Telsey noted at that time that Lambert didn’t have the Bowie-esque look. He said he looked more like a regular kid than a rock star with long hair and wearing a t-shirt and jeans and his big voice.
