True - it is just a "fun" poll so it isn't a huge deal. However, I would have voted (and nominated) very differently if I had been thinking Song+Artist/Performance vs Song merit only. THere may be even other ways to interpret "greatest song". The engineer in me is feeling like the results of this poll won't actually tell us anything at all since we weren't all voting for the same concept.
My favorite WLL performance is Adam's from Foxwood, but I nominated Led Zeppelin WLL.
I nominated Bono 's (and not U2, thank you Rihannsu) "in the name of the father" because of the way it is written and instrumentated (I hope that's the correct word). I still remember the feeling in my stomach the first time I heard it.
The same stomach feeling (my vocabulary in English is too limited to express this better
) with Nick Cave's "from her to eternity" and this one I can't imagine it with another singer.
2 songs that I really like for many years now are Men at work "down under" and Depeche Mode "enjoy the silence"
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeG-hNXXy6Iwww.youtube.com/watch?v=aGSKrC7dGcY&ob=av2eBut do these songs belong in a 5 greatest list? Too simple. Or not? I mean I included "I put a spell on you". Could it be because of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' voice and interpretation? Maybe, but I also like CCRevival version so maybe it's the song.
If we could choose more than 5 songs I would have chosen also Them "Gloria"
www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkaMVLHxzWEWhy? only for the notes? Or because of Van Morrison's singing? He is one my favourite singers and it seems unbelievable that he was only 18,19 years old when they released this song.
Speaking of simplicity, no offence to the one of you who has chosen Beatles "let it be" but for me that is not a great song (I can understand favorite but not great). It repeats the words "let it be"41!!!!!! times, if I didn't make a mistake counting. But am I right saying this? Or is it simply because this is not my taste?
And speaking of taste I consider myself a music lover no matter the genre, because I am a musician. The more you study music the more open-minded you get and you learn to judge objectivelly, based on quality, not preference.
So trying to be objective I try to listen to all the songs before I choose 3 for every page. But unfortunately I didn't listen to some songs for more than a minute or so, because I didn't like the sound from the beginning, or because I didn't like the singer, or because I thought "who is he/she?????? maybe there is a reason why I have never heard of him/her."
But, again, am I right? I heard this Johnny Mathis and I thought "who is he? WHY I have never heard of him?" #impressed
How about lyrics? A great song must have good, at least, lyrics. Well, I like Eminem's "lose yourself" and I have absolutelly NO IDEA what he is talking about (not my language, too many words, too lazy to pay attention (I TRY to be objective, honestly
), but I like the SOUND of the words he is using and the whole structure of the song.
So how to judge a song? Think the notes, the lyrics, the instrumentation, the singer? To me it's everything, if possible and with the BEST interpretation.I guess that is because I'm thinking in classical music terms.
For example Camille Saint-Saens "Danse macabre"
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyknBTm_YyMHe uses certain instruments to achieve certain sounds and create certain emotions and of course he would prefer the best possible musicians to interpretate the piece so that the sound is as close as possible to the ideal one in his head.
Sorry, very long post, conversation has moved, random thoughts, NO ADAM.
