OK - I listened to all 3 Adele songs posted here and Chasing Pavements is the only one I would listen to again. hoopla1 -I was thinking "sounds like Amy Winehouse" from the first and since I don't enjoy Amy's voice that much I guess it isn't surprising I don't like most of this. It is definitely a tone of voice thing - I'm not much of a Joplin fan either - I guess I don't like the raspy thing and prefer clear tones. I must say that the 2 non-live performances were MUCH better than the live one - there were notes at the beginning of the live performance that felt very off. Yep, I get it...music is just SO subjective. See, I like Amy much better than Adele because of the ;)wink factor--Rehab was a fav of mine when it was in its heyday, and she does a song called "F*** Me Pumps" that just makes me LMAO: "can't sit right, cause my jeans are too tight"...and really, Amy's more of a jazz singer, so I never get country vibes from her. And that subway song of Jessie J's (On my Own?) blows me away. Now, gelly, as for Ramm?--I listened to the whole thing, and not my cuppa, lol. But I would never say they aren't good, and I am grateful they inspired Rivers, cause I do like his music!

So, I am personally coming up on the two year anniversary of some bizarre form of love at first sight, experienced through the random flipping of channels while in a hotel room in Mexico City looking for anything in English. It hit me like a two by four and I'm still reeling! In between then and now, I have been nothing short of totally, consistently, wildly and deeply....ENTERTAINED!!Entertained by this unique man in all his incarnations, by his gorgeous voice and his wild stage antics, by his consistent poking at established conventions from hot boys on his arm to blue in his hair, by his crazy outfits and his frayed suits, by his attempts to navigate his path to stardom which sometimes works beyond what one would ever imagine and sometimes madly crashes and burns, by the the creative, kind and funny fans here at ATOP, and (yes, even this) by the discovery of the astonishing world of Idol and the obsessive love/hate/entitlement emotions it seems to generate (I mean....seriously, who knew????). And throughout it all...."I have never questioned my visceral reaction" (TM Ms Abdul) I am just along for the ride and am enjoying it immensely And of course, ILHSFM Lizziegs...LOVE this post. And of course ILHSFM too!!!

Interesting discussion on music. I love both Adele's and Amy's voices but only in relatively small doses. I think I just enjoy voices that are expressive - don't always need to be 'perfect' to really make an impact.
Of course, Adam has the best of both worlds - a sublimely beautiful and flexible voice that can convey a wide range of emotions.

I agree about the country sound to Adele's song. Maybe it's just this song? I haven't heard any of her other stuff. I'm kind of surprised Adam loves this - doesn't seem like his thing. I do like the song and I like her voice on parts of the song but at other times it sounds harsh. Almost annoying. Perhaps it's my ears. I've always agreed with the universal opinion that Carrie Underwood has an outstanding voice. One day before Christmas I was listening to the radio in my car and Hark the Herald Angels came on with no identification of the singer. I thought "wow this girl has an irritating voice. Of all the great performances of this carol why play this bad one?" I was astounded when I discovered it was CU. I see more Adele videos were posted as I was typing. Going back to give it another try. I guess that has nothing to do with Adam. :D Except that maybe Adele would do ok on Country radio. Color me confused I don't care for Adele at all. OMO her sound varies from a jazz singer to a country singer,to a folk singer to strident & boring.I don't get the fuss Over her. Oh well. Maybe she will help to bring back singing with out all the bells and whistles, for that I would be ever so grateful. That's where Adam totally shines.

Well as Tinafea said different strokes for different folks. I am a huuuuge Joplin fan and as for Amy i think her album is the best of the decade. And i'm glad Adam thinks of it as one of the best of the decade too. Damn, gelly how do you remember all this?? When did Adam say Amy's was one of best? I remember some list, but not where for sure...help, please? (That makes me very happy, though.) And can anyone point me to an upbeat/fun/dancey Adele song? I want to find one just for comparison's sake...

I also love this kind of music.: Rammstein is the band that Rivers Cuomo said inspired him to write. The song even though i dont understand shit, the performance and the END of the song is brilliant IMO. Of course some of you will look at me like this www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wBH6HXidO4Funny enough, I liked this Rammstein..... it was very "wagnerian" i.e. operatic. Weird, but I liked it (TM Kara). Reminds me of a Finnish group called Nightwish, also great but not for all.... LOL

And in England Adele is considered a soul singer like Amy, Dusty Springfield, etc. Ok I'm done being OT Yes, that is how I would classify her. I love that smoky sound to her voice. And I love Amy Winehouse too. Not hearing country in it at all. I think it would complement Adam's gorgeous clear tenor, kind of like Allison Iraheta only (IMO) better and richer. "Set Fire to The Rain" is my favorite on Adele's album. Somehow it makes me think of "Sleepwalker" but with less overpowering production. JMO.

Music is definitely subjective. I know my musical tastes are very different from most of you here. Very different from most of my friends too. :D I love jazz and standards (Great American Songbook stuff) and a smattering of other genres. And the voice doesn't have to be perfect. I like me some rasp too! Like Louis Armstrong!
ETA: I love that Nightwish video PostFestum! Reminds me of the Third Reich (the Wagnerian influence) but other than that it's great!
