OMG, I just listened again, and I get what he's saying...it's NOT note for note, but it is similar...but the beginning instrumentals and electronica noises give it a whole different vibe to me. Hmmmm....

Well somebody said 'peep' - hi NoAngel. Here is a 'peep' back! I am just sitting here laughing that all this article has resulted in so far is a debate about a) what job Ann Powers has these days....and I guess I was right, she left LA Times, and the answer is NPR is her new destination b) that supposedly the author is self-promoting an old article, which who knows where that one comes from.... ....so clearly the collective Adamtopian brain cells are just taking a little vacation tonight and I will re-post this thing tomorrow. It is really worthy of a tad more mental brilliance than so far put on display. With that, I will just leave this quiet land as well. Need to go pick up hubby from the airport....after a 4 airport - 3 country - 3 airlines who all were not on the original itinary - ordeal. Don't even ask. So glad I am off the travel circuit for a while. Did this for years as well. Not fun. Alright, need to go. ETA: Aloha and Mzsue....thanks for your posts, some things crossed over while I wrote this....glad you liked the article and I was commenting here on the overall absence of comments of course and not your replies. I am out of town and couldn't go to Pop Con that Ann is currently attending but some very interesting and/or provocative (if not all wholly convincing) pieces were being written for that on diverse aspects of music. For those interested, I'm sure either the papers will come out or at least some blogs by presenters/attendees. FWIW. Goodnight~ |

Okay, I like this review very much, but I just don't get this part: Most disappointing is “Broken Open,” surprisingly the album’s single nod to the goth-musical theater continuum that Lambert rode to American Idol success. The song cynically attempts to reconstruct the opening moments of his cover of “Mad World” note for note, on the condescending assumption that its audience will be too dumb to notice or care. Such transparent recycling bodes ill for the larger promise of Mr. Lambert to be a groundbreaker.Here are the two songs, back to back...WTF is he talking about? Am I missing something? I LOVE Broken Open--it never reminds me of Mad World--?? MAD WORLD BROKEN OPEN Craazylady, I'd never seen this--thanks much for posting it! Going back to read once more. Broken Open is my fav track from the album and was amazing live. And has nothing to do with Mad World, the goth-musical theater continuum. Of course, I do not think that WLL or PTFMWD or ACIGC are in the goth-musical theater continuum either. Perhaps someone can explain this to me. |

So far, this is my favorite sentence from the piece on Adam: He hopes to redefine what counts as mainstream, not fit into it.What do you think? Is this true? I certainly hope so. I think this statement might be born out by US sales figures for FYE. Don't get me wrong, I think his sales are fine. Just saying that I think the statement IS true and that his first effort was a damned good balancing act of redefining mainstream (ART) vs. fitting in (BUSINESS). Going this route means platinum will take a while, especially in US where definition of mainstream is so much narrower than many other countries. Hey, Q3! Read your post above and decided yep, I'll have to give this some more thought tomorrow after a good sleep. The very words goth-music continuum just made my eyes cross!
