ETA: By the way, maybe we need to get Adam some pants like Cook was wearing at his concert last night. Major wardrobe malfunction. MJ's has a post about it if anyone wants to go look. I will forever curse the excellent workmanship on Adam's GNT outfits!!! Things looked so promising with the sleeve failure that first night.... >:( I'm convinced they were Kevlar reinforced in strategic areas!

GAH!!! All these pics!! He looks incredible. I do have a soft spot for those PFLAG ones. So natural and just absolutely gorgeous. Here's something that was discussed on Twitter that may answer the question about "Why hasn't a single been chosen?" Katy's peeps did a huge schmooze effort for the PDs and invited them to these awesome parties to give them an exclusive listen to the music AND (I've heard some rumors) that they were able to give feedback on what they thought should be the lead single(s). IMO, this results in a sense of "ownership" for said PDs (not in a bad way, but that they feel part of the process). I think it's a genius move and maybe this is why Adam said the single isn't selected yet. katy-perry-fans.popsugar.com/Katy-Perrys-Teenage-Dream-10216740About 100 select members of the music industry — mostly radio programmers, but also Perry’s Capitol Records team and the Norwegian production duo, Stargate — have surrendered their cell phones for the price of hearing nine tracks from the singer’s new album, “Teenage Dream.” Most people are huddled by the open bar, and absolutely no one is going near the sand — except, that is, for Perry, who after setting up each track, traipses back and forth through the pit to greet those in attendance. For this simulated boardwalk bash, Perry’s look of choice is a leopard-print Dolce & Gabbana dress, artfully applied makeup and daring peep-toes. “I don’t like sand in my stilettos,” she pouts, referencing a lyric from her instant summer anthem, “California Gurls.” She teeters back to her stool. “Whoever wrote that line deserves to be fired!” Perry repeated this scene three more times that month, visiting Chicago, Atlanta and her home base of Los Angeles. Her mission: to shore up support for “Teenage Dream” before its August 24 release, by wooing radio program directors with free cocktails, corn dogs, cotton candy and a first listen to several potential singles. “We wanted to share the music with people who had been instrumental in supporting her career,” says Greg Thompson, executive vice president of promotion at Capitol. Thompson served as Perry’s co-host, shrugging and laughing when she introduced the title track by saying in her girliest voice, “I really wanted to call this album ‘Teenage Wet Dream.’”
(There is more in the article before and after.) Wow that is so cool. I've wondered why something along this scale hadn't been done before...I guess it was. P.S. It seems so Adam....wonder if it tipped him in favor of her management team !! And that is the difference between a mediocre and a great management company. But I wonder, do managment and record label produce these strategies together? And who pays? What is the breakdown?

I'm sure that's very true. The bottom line is, they probably aren't REALLY leaving it up to a pure democratic process, they just want the feedback about what is coming across and what isn't. TPTB are still going to make an executive decision based on a ton of factors. These kinds of things are more about schmoozing the gatekeepers in a way that's still legal (as has been discussed, this greasing-of-palms used to be a widely held practice, but is pretty much illegal now, I think). Introduction or launch parties, however, are not. When I was in college, I used to do a lot of screenings for unfinished films in L.A. The studios bring your in to watch a film that is about 85-90 percent complete, and then you give feedback on it. There were a few I saw that became blockbusters and to this day, I take a little bit of pride in that fact – like I had something to do with it. Of course, I was just lucky to get ones they knew were going to be major and they were starting the Word of Mouth early. Point was, they were doing these types of screenings for films they were quite sure were destined to be hits. The process (as it is expensive) isn't nearly as common with dogs, IMO. Two years ago I went to a pre-screening of ABC's new fall season (was 2009) and same thing – we watched the pilots and rated them. One of the shows I saw was "Modern Family" and I spotted right away that it had hit potential. I do find it gratifying that I identified it on the spot and it has become a blockbuster and has won an Emmy for Best Comedy two years in a row. I think the psychology behind a lot of these "sneak previews" (like film festivals, etc.) is that those who are the early discoverers talk it up and in essence, become part of the team. To have Adam perform live is a fantastic idea, I think. Agreed. It is really more about building relationship and goodwill. Like the pharmaceutical reps who are masters at the whole schmoozing thing. Whoever schmoozes the best gets the most attention.

I don't remember it happening for Adam last time but several news media people indicated it happened for Kris. Not a fool-proof strategy then 8-). Heh! Well I don't think he threw a party but Ricky (thankfully I don't have to go there for news or ustreams anymore) leaked that peeps didn't like what they heard at first. But as far as fool-proof? Well Kris' first single did have a pretty nice run so I'd say the feedback and buyin eventually created something that everyone was happy with.

I'm scrolling scrolling scrolling today. Can't go another day of reading everyones opinions whether Monte is in the wring or not, the whole BFM etc..., I really can care less, at this point anyway, about this whole drama. Everything pretty much has been said, over and over again and by various posters, for the last three days. It's really wearing me out. Anyway I guess I just really wanna talk about Adam and his album, and hypothetical sales and promo. Not about Monte, not about Tommy, not about crays. I guess I just have been in a happy place regarding Adam and I want to stay and not be brought down by any perceived drama, especially by thing we don't really know, or can't even change. Sorry if I'm sounding like I'm lecturing or chastising people, but as I said, just tired... yay for change of topics! mys*&@^#r weren't you predicting Nov. 1 for the single? Do you think that's still a possibility? I was hoping for October but I can definitely hang on until November. Besides, explode sounds much better than ish! ;D aah, So Excited!!! I am predicting the 1st or the 8th. Leaning towards the 8th, with Adam taping Ellen on Nov. 10th!

I think it comes out of the promo budget, but like with most events these days, they also get sponsorships to pay for a lot of the elements. The venue will often negotiate to a low rate because of the celebrity exposure, etc. The alcohol companies will donate product for well-placed product placement and name visibility. The home radio station might pay a premium to be considered the "host" station and its logo will be visible throughout, including appearing on the repeating wall behind the red carpet, etc.
Other fashion, luxury and related products might donate to the gift bags, etc. because they too want to introduce their products to radio PDs so they can get an on-air shout out, etc.
ETA: As far as if it's management or label, my best guess would be a combination of both? If the label wanted to sponsor it, they certainly could – like a studio sponsors a film premiere. However, if the label balked at a big, splashy launch, management could present a pitch to persuade them that it's worth their while.
Since I don't know who handles the purse strings during a promo launch, I would think it would be the label, with organizational help from management.

Whoever schmoozes the best gets the most attention. The pharmaceutical landscape has changed a lot in recent years. Many companies have been fined millions of dollars for their promotional activities. The sales/marketing department has to pass everything by me to make sure we are in compliance - press releases, sales materials, meetings, conferences, speaker forums, etc. Needless to say, I am not on their favorite person list. But going back to Adam. I like the idea of a private concert and maybe invite some fans for feedback? Wouldn't that be lovely!
