Have been chasing the tails of these threads now for at least 4 days and this is finally the first one I could reach. At 9:45 pm and at page 44, I finally caught one.
I am in AWE as are all of us and you have said so brilliantly what I felt too in all those posts over the many days now.
I smile when I see that all these fan videos from Belfast start at about 30sec to 1 min into the song. Can you imagine? They had no idea what was coming ... they could not believe what they were hearing and then started realizing that they were witnessing something absolutely incredible....and so the cell phones came out without any knowledge how that would sound, but just driven by the need to capture that moment of epic-ness on their phones.
It also went amazingly silent in that arena where people otherwise were ready to wrap things up and were just waiting for that last act. Then THIS. You could almost see that disbelief in what they were hearing, their brains working to absorb a sound that a generation raised on auto-tuned and over-produced commercial junk had never heard. The sound of a brilliant VOICE soaring above every other sound in the arena.
A voice whose sound is an individual one, as vocal sounds should be, one that our ear canals are not familiar with. Imagine our eyes all of sudden were given the task to process a different and unknown color, in the same way our ears can at times hear sounds that the brain first needs to learn to process. I think some of the isolated negative reaction to Adam's voice is simply the reaction to something unfamiliar, something quite literally completely unheard of.
In the earlier discussion whether pop is starting to re-focus back on the vocals, I am leaning towards a cautious yes. Not that all of our charts will now start to be blessed with strong vocals, of course not. In todays' more complex music environment there will always be multiple dynamics at work at the same time. But I do think that emphasis of vocals is beginning to have a chance again. And it is not just Adele, it is also Jesse J (in spite of some autotune assistance), it is also Gaga to some extent, Kelly Clarkson is doing respectable with MKIA and Bruno Mars can sing alright too. Adam is just going to add to that already existing trend once his single drops....somewhere, someday, somehow.
Of course, the regular urban / rhythmic stuff is still around and going strong and then there are all these country influenced cross-overs and whatever the hell Maroon is doing these days....and so on. It is never only about one style, but I do think that it is fair to say that the years of Brittney and even worse Jessica Simpson and Co....that kind of complete focus only on sexy looks and not at all at vocal ability and also that dumbing down of every song by a female artist - I think that trend is a bit over...and good riddance for that.
During a time of re-orientation and dis-orientation there is always a bit of chaos and in chaos lies opportunity. Adam has a chance to make a mark, the timing is right and hope it all works out for him.
He certainly made a mark last Sunday and in the end good music wins out eventually. Sometimes it takes a little time to get there, if the trends go otherwise, but in the end people long for something that nourishes the soul and that is what Adam has given me and so many others since years and I think more and more people are longing to hear more from him for exactly that same reason.
