Adam Lambert on Rolling Stone red carpet

In this clip from last night's Rolling Stone after-party at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, stars arrive on the red carpet and chat about their favorite performances of the night. "Katy Perry played acoustic. It was really risky with a big production show," says the Eagles' Joe Walsh. "And she just nailed it." Adam Lambert raved about fellow American Idol alum Kelly Clarkon's performance. "She was very at ease and very comfortable on stage like she always is," he says.

I thought Adam looked wonderful, spoke and presented wonderfully and I loved how he graciously behaved, but yet firmly demonstrated with his outfit, where he stood. Would it be nice, if all fashion reviewers would get that, sure, but it is what it is.

To me the sparkly suit looked fine with that black coat to mellow it down a bit. I always thought that the full three piece at the 2009AMA was just a bit too much. The fact that the rehearsal video from 2009 that was posted yesterday is so much easier to watch is not only the normally discussed stereotypes of the performance having gone too far, etc....but also because the outfit added a somewhat threatening element to it by being just too much in your eye. In the rehearsal, Adam is wearing a black Bowie T-shirt and black pants (if I recall right, did not watch it yesterday) and it is just easier on the eye.

But yesterday, with that black coat over two-piece suit, I thought this worked just fine and obviously the symbolism of wearing the same suit as 2 years ago is just WOW. Bold. Unchanged. Brave. Gorgeous. Breathtaking. Mind-boggling!!!!

And to me the message is true. Adam is not the one that has changed. It is the world around him that has changed and very much because of him. Today, the male kiss has been seen in TV on tons of occasions, it does not generate the up-roar it did two years ago and people have moved on. He did move the mile-markers. He was not the only one, but he certainly was a major part.

The fact that ABC and AMA can now re-tract their initial reaction and pretend they were always cool with things without 10000 new folks complaining that their retraction is inappropriate, that is showing progress. The fact that Adam got one of the biggest applause of the night, that is progress and shows that many in that room were familiar with the story and had since had time to reflect on it too. Things have changed around Adam and while he paid a terrible price initially, I think in the long term his performance will stand out as one that moved a mountain.

With that said, I also will have to leave you guys for about a week, I probably will have very little or no access to internet. Have a Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate and see you back on the other side.
