I cannot find within me any cause to worry about Trespassing. I know nothing about the industry, nothing about marketing, nothing about numbers, nothing about what makes a hit in pop. So, take it for what it is worth.
1. Adam has a devoted and growing fan base. They will all jump on the album the first week. His Glamberts will probably buy more than one.
2. The radio people and media people seem eager to hear and embrace Trespassing. Where some looked side-eyed at the gay, emo, rocker, theater kid from Idol with the cray fans the first time around, many seem to have reframed their perception of Adam. Somehow, in the past two years, his brand has changed. He has gained legitimacy in the music business. He has evolved from weird outsider to hip, now, next insider and celebrity. Just his name brings sites hits. He has world-wide recognition. He is culturally relevant and influential.
3. Adam has worked hard to build a good relationship with the media. They LIKE him. He's one of the good guys. He's accessible. He's clever, funny, talks good sound bites, looks stunning, and is dependable for a great interview. It has taken a lot of hard work on Adam's part, and a determination to do whatever it takes with a smile on his face. It has paid off.
4. Adam is wowing the big guns in the music industry with his voice and with the ease of working with him. He is exciting them with the possibilities of great music in collaboration. The buzz has been intense, and intensely positive.
5. Adam has immersed himself in all aspects of the pop music business. He is familiar with all the players, with their products, with their sound, with their particular strengths and talents. I get the impression that many pop singers do not put in nearly the study he does. They rely on other people to be the experts and craft their sound for them. In contrast, is there any group, any artist on the music scene today that Adam is not familiar with? He lives and breathes this stuff and is relentless in learning more.
6. Adam has grown immensely in the past three years. Musically, personally, as a celebrity, as a spokesperson, as a business man. Recently, I have seen a subtle but sea change in his presence. He is mature, confident (but never cocky), and grounded, while still keeping that enthusiasm for life, that child-like excitement and joy front and center. It just feels like he has come into his own.
I may or may not like the sound/genre on Trespassing. I have to wait and see. But, I have total confidence that Adam has made a fantastic and highly marketable offering of the best quality. It's gonna be great!

THIS...IS...AWESOME!!!!!!!!And the absolute best part is that - even if someone were to buy it (you know some people will, even if as a well intentioned gift) its AUTOMATIC ADVERTISING for the *** REAL*** album. This is so perfect I can't help from squeeing. Heck, even the language used is the perfect blend of factual and push. Kudos Kudos Kudos for whoever thought of it. Gotta find those leftover label stickers I have lying around! ETA: BTW if anyone is worried about "getting into trouble" just use the "Easy Peel" stickers. As far as I'm concerned, if an object can come off without damaging the initial packaging, you can't be accused of "defacing" the product. [evil grin] Of course the sticker might reappear the next day, but that a different issue!! Well, I can't do the sticker bit, but if I see any BFM's in my store, they will probably move around a bit in the music section. hahahahahaha... ;D

Cassie -
I am totally in your camp. And the last few entries here quoting Nile Rodgers, and the recent Queen/Adam medley further show what respect Adam has earned. No one needs to be on the edge - Relax!

I'd guess that the majority of the 1.3 million people following Adam on twitter will buy his album as soon as it is available. I don't understand why they'd follow him if they weren't great fans of his music. And the most true fans (like we) will buy many of them and give to our friends, who haven't discovered Adam yet. Well you gotta take into account that not ALL his followers are fans. Some are twitter accounts that are bots, news twitters or companies...etc etc. I'd assume the majority are...but I wouldn't assume he would sell the exact amount of albums as the number of his followers. We talked about this before once didn't we? There was some article that showed that there wasn't a significant correlation between twitter followers and music sales? It's great of course as promo and communication with those who are frequently on twitter. Of the artists I follow on twitter, I haven't bought albums from at least half of them I'd say, and aside from Adam I definitely don't have more than one or two releases from each. But I am aware at least peripherally of what they might be up to, and I am interested in them at least casually. I'm much more likely to consider buying their music, and to know when new items are released. ETA: here's one article about it: www.musicrow.com/2010/12/do-twitter-followers-equal-sales/I also remember reading about a social networking platform for artists to be able to track fan followers by buying behavior as well as other measures (like concert attendance, etc.) I don't know if it's still in the development/demo stages but I thought something like this could give really interesting insights -- and also show how many casual buyer fans are socially networked to an artist or aren't.

ETA: here's one article about it: www.musicrow.com/2010/12/do-twitter-followers-equal-sales/LOL We prolly have discussed it. Fandom goes right round baby right round like a record baby...lol. I'll read that article...sounds interesting. And hey if more followers = more sales for real then yay! I'm just always cautious when it comes to basing things like sales on twitter or facebook numbers...but if it does have a legit correlation than that's pretty cool. Hrm...I just read that article and it makes it seem that there really isn't much of a correlation between followers and sales. At least that's what I got out of it. More reason why, imo, the music needs to stand on it's own.
