So GAGa says Whitney Houston was her inspiration...(when the song was initially being compared to Madonna's song) Well GAGA finishes the video as a gap toothed image ...Madonna anyone???Now that is wierd too!
She is a tough one to figure out.
For me, simplistic as it may be ...the video was not really enjoyable or fun to watch...just wierd. The song itself has a good beat though.

But I still see Madonna as never letting herself appear TOO awkward, and there's no reason why she should, but what I find different and interesting about Lady Gaga is that she doesn't seem to limit hereself by worrying about whether or not others will think she's always and ever "pretty pretty" - especially when she's also being about sex. Madonna, Rhiana, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Xtina, and even Pink (who am I forgetting?) - I love all these pop princesses, but none of them go as "wild and weird" as Gaga does. That is her "thing" - she's a freaky freak, a "monster." No one else does that AND she does it with such loving attention to the details.... I would guess that people who don't like ladies touching themselves on stage/video probably don't love when Adam does it. Not everyone does. I do. But obviously, that's only something he does sometimes. But, when he does, he gets pretty into it! (I think some of Adam's fans are "a tough crowd" - and I mean that in a good way, as in discerning - because many of them aren't big into pop culture drivel, like I am - they're fans of really, really good music and voices - of which, there probably isn't really a LOT of in pop music. So, they might think: "Good lord, listen to this dreck out there! Adam is so much betterer." And I agree. But I like a lot of the other stuff, too.) To me, Lady Gaga is more of a visual entertainer than a vocal one. I sort of see her songs as secondary to her stage and video presentations of them. Would one say Adam is sometimes explicit on stage? Is Gaga? I'd say both are sometimes, in different ways, but Gaga definitely wears a lot less clothing a lot of the time. ETA: For the record, I do like straightforward, story mv's, too. I thought Crystal Bowersox' mv was well-done and moving. Bridget, a lot of what you said here and earlier makes me think better of the video--I agree that I like that Gaga recognizes that real life sex (and sexiness) is "ugly" and awkward but that these things can contribute to, rather than detract from, it's beauty. However, and this will sound far crueler than I mean it to--I just mean it in a straightforward, matter-of-fact way--to me saying that Madonna cared more about being pretty and smooth than Gaga may just be another way of saying that Madonna was much prettier and smoother than Gaga. Gaga is working what she's got, in her own particular way. I see what you're saying about Gaga vs. the pop princesses, but as someone who only intermittently listens to mainstream pop, I have to say that one of its great appeals to me is that it isn't ashamed to be easy to like (this is one of Adam's great appeals to me, too, for that matter). That shouldn't mean dumbing things down--I think easy-to-like, when done well, is very different from dumbed down. My problem with what Gaga has been doing lately is that while her music places her squarely into the good part of mainstream pop--it's catchy, and fun to listen and dance too, and frequently clever--her visual presentations have, for me, been increasingly difficult to like, and that jars for me with what she's producing musically. By the way, it's never bothered me that she's explicit, though childbirth to me isn't sexy--that's a different kind of explicit from touching yourself, so I'm not sure this is the same thing as what Adam does (and as you've said, Adam does it differently anyway--with a heck of a lot more self-directed humor). Nor have I ever doubted her commitment. And I love her dancers--"driven," as you said earlier, is a great word for them--and the angular staccatto of their movements is easy for me to get into. But I guess my problem with her "weirdness" is something other's have touched on today. If you're embracing the inevitable and wonderful weirdness of the human individual, which is presumably what this vid is about, then why set it in such a hard to relate to, alien, inhuman world? This vid simply didn't look, to me, like it was about individuals. I didn't recognize any human warmth in it--it seemed to betray, in a way, the moving quality (Madonna-ripoff/allusion or not) of the many amateur covers now flooding youtube. Gaga tweeted the one by the little girl herself, saying this was what she was writing for. Well, I don't see that girl anywhere in this video. Angelkrash said it: "the whole alien thing. It just doesn't look good.I love Sci-Fi but isn't the song about celebrating humans?" I think the missing human element is similar to the missing humor element--there is plenty of irony here, but not the warmth of humor. There is a split-second at the very end of the video, where the outcast in the jean's jacket and the awkward teeth and the tear rolling down her face peeks through--I though this was the video's strongest figure, realest figure, and I would like to have seen more of her. Lately Gaga's been leaving me a little cold--I think that's the word. But I think it was visually fantastic, I loved, as I said, the dancers, I loved the mix of streamlined high-visual dancing and the cheap, plastic looking, kitsch of the monster mother and the pink triangle. I loved that she was in flip flops. I could have, frankly, done without the slime--that was more gross-out than bold to me, and seems derivative and already done. Totally separate topic--I agree, Adam, Man Down is a terrific, tight, pared down Rhianna song. I love how you hear her roots in her voice in it. ETA--Emo, totally agree about the opening narration--cringed a bit. And agree, too, no double standard here. GNT banter occasionally brought similar feelings out in me.

GaGa got the beat right for the song on the Top 40, for sure, but Chunkeymonkey's review of the video sums it all up for me. I think the clock is running down on her though, so relief is in sight. Pride goeth before a fall, or some shit like that?

midwifespal, I loved your whole analysis of the Gaga vid. I think it really hits on a lot of the reasons I didn't love it.

MY FRIEND JUST SENT ME THIS. WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK. IS. THIS. FUCKERY? That is the big WINK someone was asking for.... For me, this is a song that shouldn't have a wink. I think that's one of my big problems with this video. Is Gaga serious about the message of the song or isn't she? If she is, shouldn't the video reflect that? All I see it reflecting is Gaga's love of special effects.

Speaking of the dancers in the BTW video, was Marc Kanemura in there? I didn't notice him, but I think he was at the Grammys. He's been with LG a long time.
I am patiently waiting for new music from Adam, but what I REALLY can't wait for is another video!! I hope he doesn't get too artsy fartsy on us. I think he'll be keeping it real, though, but filmed artistically.
