It has been fun reading all the reactions to Better. It reminds me of the alligory of blind men encountering an elephant for the first time. One touches the trunk and says it is like a snake. Another touches the tail and says it is like a rope. A third touches the side and says it is like a wall, and the fourth touches a leg and says it is like a tree trunk.
Adam is so very talented and versatile that he appeals to many people for many different reasons. And each person listens to the new song and evaluates it based on what side of Adam they like the best. I come from a classical and jazz background. While I would love to hear Adam kill that lane I knew there was no possibility of that sound making the first single, or even the album. So, I was prepared to not enjoy the single, but to enjoy the voice and the hopefully successful rise up the pop charts. Like many, I see that as the best chance for getting the music I would love to hear him sing sometime in the future. Color me pleasantly surprised that the single is so catchy, the voice so present, and the vocal harmonies so yummy.
My long range hope is that Adam is wildly successful in era #2 and gets great recognition and acceptance as an artist. He tours sold out venues around the world. He lives the pop star life. Then, a few years down the road he again becomes a little bored and decides to experiment with a new direction and style that to my ear sounds more musically complex and challenging, vocally. We have all seen him evolve from musical theater to metal rock to OTT glam, to a more sophisticated image. I don't predict that the evolution will stop now. Eventually, I hope that Adam will have fun tackling genres that will please every segment of his potential audience at one time or another.
Who else in music of any genre today has that potential, that diversity and that talent?
