Just want to join the chorus and wish everyone a merry Christmas and/or very Happy Holidays! Wanted to bring you a little piece of Austria, but sitting in middle or Pennsylvania that is not quite so easy. So I'll thought I'd post a picture of our nativity scene, which is Austrian woodcarving craft. It was assembled by my parents over a span of 10 years going back to the same artist on multiple trips and has traveled with me, where-ever I have moved throughout my life. If is a lively scene and all the faces are individually carved and have special facial expressions. Mary for example is not the usual happy or solemn face that you typically see, but rather a face of anguish and fear. Probably more realistic to the situation. Taking about realistic. Why an elephant you might wonder? Well the crib was made in Groebning, which is in a valley in the Alps. Hannibal crossed the Alps, therefore an Elephant at the crib is completely logical. I don't see how there even can be a question? It's the same reason as:Why Mary is fair skinned and blond? Anyways who are we to say who belongs and who does not. And with this I bring it back to this forum. I have throughout my life enjoyed an inviting environment culturally, an environment where there was a place for everyone, be it from different religion, cultural background, lifestyle, preferences and have always believed that this is how it should be everywhere. Here at Atop I find this to be the case too and so I want to thank all who are contributing so wonderfully and I am looking forward to many happy hours with all of you in 2012. Adam just draws in a wonderful crowd! Frohe Weihnachten!

Nope they have been my outlaws for the last 30 odd years - a fairly common term in my neck of the woods Sorry, I only know one meaning to the word, and I guess it's not it... Would you enlighten me?

Aurora: you did a good report of the Finnish Christmas, -using smileys! "Angel pictures" This is what we did when we were kids (and sometimes, even now, when I'm an adult) -brings back memories-

my son and i logged on this morning and the first thing he said was "Is the new night before christmas posted?" I did not even know there was going to be a new one. He chuckled out loud when we read last year's together last night. This year's version is just as awesome. A true trip down memory lane. Thanks Hoopla for the new Christmas tradition!

Happy Holidays to all Atops!!!! I know many of you are parents or grandparents and have spent a good portion of your lives assembling toys, making merry and losing sleep to make sure that Santa and his Elves complete their rounds. My morning started at 5:45 AM when my DGD called to say Merry Christmas Gma - Come on over so that we can open presents. It might have been very early, but I remember many a time when my own children wouldn't let me sleep that late, they were so excited. Of course it is now 2:30 in the afternoon and presents have been opened, played with and we are preparing our Christmas feast. It has been a "special" day and I hope all of you have had wonderful memories as well. Much luv to all of you as we prepare for the ride of 2012 and I hope to meet many of you in the year to come. Babs

Q3, thanks for the gift of stars and the beautiful banner.
Hoopla - fantastic job and thanks for taking the time to do it.
Nikki - sorry for your loss. Talked to my sister last night who lives halfway around the world. We found it surreal when we started discussing our respective holiday menu. We were making almost the same dishes and these are not the usual Christmas ones especially here in the US where some ingredients are not that easy to find. There is such a connection among sisters that is hard to explain so I understand how you are feeling.
And to all the special people in this forum - may you be blessed with all good things today and always.
