I believe in some interview Adam stated that seeing Gaga's performance also contributed to his upping the provocative nature if his performance. I agree with both of you. The network played it up because they knew most of what he was going to do. And then he tried to up his game even more because of Gaga and maybe others. But that whole production was playing on someone else's turf and not his own. It was too busy and running up and down the steps with this elaborate dance routine was not what most were expecting or wanting from him. And the Out article coming out right before his performance was in no way supportive of him and so negative. He was hurt and furious. Now I know some think he opened doors for others (I think he did too) but some doors also closed for him. While others went on the perform on one big award show after another and SNL with great exposure and not a care about their sexuality, Adam never got another solo award show performance in the US. Unless you want to count CMT. He was wonderful on there but not one of the big award shows nor even a large country show. And of course QAL at the Oscars. Combination of an artistic decision and a marketing decision. Double standards sure. But I feel his audience (not Glamberts of course) we’re culprable. He’s a theatre kid. So maybe underestimated his audience. Who on the Idol tour seem to be changing. Still I wouldn’t change the Amas for the world. It allowed him to step out of the idol bubble. Abs become Adam Lambert. Sacrificed commercial success in the states. But he also became a world wide star.
