I live a good hour outside of NYC by car, given ideal traffic conditions. (Actually, more like 1.5 to 2 hours in commuting hours.) But I do subscribe to the New York Times, and religiously read the Sunday real estate section feature item in which first time buyers try to compare three possible purchases in NYC. It's a different world out there. Studios are over 1 million and maintenance fees are like a second mortgage of $1500 to $2000 a month. I couldn't do it on a New Jersey salary, but NYC employers must pay enough to make home ownership a possibility if you combine two incomes. Another example - I love San Diego, and if I didn't have grandkids in the East, I would retire there but for - the real estate prices are crazy. On our last visit, we went to the Fire Museum. Apparently, there's a hella lot of retired NYPD and NYFD retired there, as learned on a plaque dedicated to 9/11. Must be great pensions.
