I have an "I probably live under a rock" question. What do websites gain by getting hits? Do they get higher paying advertisers or something. Or is it just the bragging rights that they get a lot of hits. Regarding the advertising, I would assume that MJ's gets a ton of hits. The ads that I see are mostly "West Hempstead woman finds the secret to losing belly fat" kind of thing. Not something I would be interested in. And why does it matter if a DJ/radio station posts a contest just to get hits? What do they gain by getting the hits? Also, the "don't give that site any hits" thing. I get that it's a punishment, but why does it matter? And why does it matter how many twitter followers someone has? I think it's amazingly cool that Adam has so many followers, but how does it matter in the grand scheme of things? People would hear/see how many followers someone has and decide to follow them to see what all the hoopla is about? Sugaree, i'm sure Q3 can break down i greater detail, but the bottom line is hits=ratings. Media is funded by advertising almost exclusively (subscription/movie tickets are exception, but even with subscription fees, you still get a lot of stealth advertising). The Internet is a media platform, just like radio or TV and it depends on advertisers to keep those who work in exclusively web media employed. It has been a platform badly misunderstood at its inception and people didn't know or understand how to monetize it - to look at a web page and break it into salable blocks of ad space like you would a print magzine. Advertising prices are set by reach and impression. Reach is how many people will see that ad. An "outdoor" company who owns a billboard on the freeway will KNOW how many people travel that freeway on an average day and set their prices accordingly. Advertisers want to reach as much people as they can for their ad dollars. The web is a viable means of advertising, but both media and advertisers took a very long time to wrap their brains (and their advertising budgets) around this. Web actually has a lot of advantages to traditional advertising in that there isn't the enormous overhead of TV, radio, print and outdoor. The spots can often be produced digitally for less money. A website's traffic is like a TV shows ratings. They have to prove to their advertisers how many people are visiting every day and how many people see their ads. And we're proof that people spend A LOT of time looking at these pages. BTW, a lot of ads, including MJ's have those creepy stealth ads that know what you have googled recently and they show ads customized to you. Thank you. I guess that's what I was thinking. I'm just not an "I'll buy it because I saw an internet/tv/newspaper/billboard ad" person. I don't buy Budweiser because they spent a fortune on Super Bowl ads, I don't go to Best Buy because they're on a billboard, I don't buy milk because someone famous is in a magazine with a milk mustache, etc. Unless they're advertising a "half price for this" kind of ad, I don't give a shit. I buy what I like or what I need or what's on sale that is what I like or need. Anyone have an answer to the twitter and radio ads question?

Sorry, didn't answer Twitter question ... Still a matter of reach. Not going to get into the ways companies use twitter as free advertising, but will focus more on why they care what celebrities have a lot of followers.
Advertisers, talent bookers, etc. want to be able to quantify a celebrity's star power. Who is listening to them? If I have them hawk my product will sales go through the roof? Also, if I book this person for a concert or TV show, will they have a built in audience? Gaga and Bieber can tweet one thing to their followers and reach an insane number of people without spending a penny. If they were to say, "Watch me on XXX whatever the hell show I'm on this week!" that is going out to 10 million (at least semi-interested in that they follow them) people. That would have cost a LOT of money in the day to shoot and air promos. They still do that of course, but the other 10M or wherever they are these days (a lot higher, I think), is a bonus.
So Twitter followers, though it comes with a lot of bots and casual followers, or some "train wreck" gawkers like Charlie Sheen, Snooki and her ilk, is still a quantifiable gauging of someone's popularity - good and bad.
ETA: Sugaree, you also partially answered the question about why advertisers target YOUNG consumers - because they WILL go buy whatever has been presented to them as "must have"! And wh,y though the buying power for mature demographics is much higher, they aren't as easily coerced, so therefore a lot of advertising is wasted on then.
THIS is why Adam is competing with Bieber and Willow Smith - because radio advertisers want to reach young, IMPRESSIONABLE audiences who WILL drive right to Mc Donald's because someone just said the McRib is back.
(I'd venture to say, however, that most of us are not even aware at how things are presented to us and just because we don't jump right up and head to Best Buy, the seed is often planted and it may take a time or two or 10, but at some point, you might decide you need an iPad2 Right. Fucking. Now! And hmmm, didn't I see in the Sunday circular that Best Buy has them for 20% off? .... (much rationalizing occurs and you're out the door...)

Wow. The statement this article made about Austin Texas is so absurd that it makes me question the entire article. The culture of Austin has never been particularly affected by the presence of elected officials; or rather I should say state government has its own power subculture that has little to do with the culture of the rest of the city. While I may disagree with many of their policies, the idea that Governor Bush or Perry are "backwoodsy" is insulting beyond belief. Why didn't they just talk to someone who lives in Austin if they wanted to know what it was like here? I guess I should be glad that the article purports to debunk the idea that there aren't gay friendly cities in the South and West, but perpetuating other dated stereotypes and inaccuracies to do so just makes me understand why so many people in the limelight hate the press.

Thanks again SusieFierce. I did not think of the savings aspect of it. Makes sense.

Wow. The statement this article made about Austin Texas is so absurd that it makes me question the entire article. It is my opinion that any time ones sees or reads any mainstream press dealing with a subject one is expert on, one will find glaring inaccuracies. If you are a physicist and see an episode of Nova, they will get something wrong. If you are a quilting fan and watch a show on the history of quilts they will fubar it terribly. If you are a truck driver and read an article about the life of a truck driver they will get it all wrong. It is universal- media/press/journalism is very nearly 90% dismissive of truth and accuracy with their remaining concerns being only about ratings/sales/hits/making money. So don't be too upset about Austin- it's just one more article in the long line of misinformation being passed around everywhere you turn. Topic- I don't know how Adam and all other celebrities manage to take reading lies about themselves at every turn. I swear I'd go live in a cave.

Thanks again SusieFierce. I did not think of the savings aspect of it. Makes sense. Yeah, they're sneaky bastards and I think a lot of it does work on a subconscious level. My sister just bought new furniture over the holidays and every person who walked in the door to their Xmas party, after admiring the new stuff, asked where they got it. When they said the store name, pretty much every person sang the jingle as a reflex. It was so ingrained in our brains it was instantaneous. Also, I thought it very funny when all the HDTVs started coming out (I didn't have one yet, but family/friends did). I started noticing a was craving pizza like Whoa! when watching football games at their houses. Then I realized it was the HDTV. The pizza looked so good in the commercials that I didn't realize it on a conscious level at first, I just knew I was suddenly craving pizza, which was weird when we were preparing and enjoying other great game-day foods. It works on many levels...
