How to Be Like Adam (Part 2)
By juniemoon, part 1 was posted on 1.12.12
On Friday (1.12.12) I promised “10 easy lessons” in which we learn from Adam how to be happier and more interesting – in other words, to be our best selves. Sure beats New Year’s Resolutions! The first five lessons are in that post. Here are five more.
6. Be nice to other people. Anyone who had grown up on a diet of Rolling Stone and “Behind the Music” knows that a lot of rock stars are cocky egomaniacs full of bravado and personality disorders. But according to a survey of music industry insiders done for Million Dollar Mistakes, a guide for aspiring musicians, arrogance – call it strut -- is best saved for the stage. Apparently a bad attitude is the number one way in which new artists sabotage interviews, recording sessions, and careers.
Adam has made a name for himself as a nice guy in this rough, rude old world. Imagine what the world be like if everyone treated each other with as much respect and politeness as Adam does. How could you make things a little nicer for the people who have to encounter you on a daily basis?
7. Give it a shot. One of the most persistent undercurrents in our society these days is fear. Almost everyone is short on both time and money, and that makes every decision seem like a big deal. Fear is persistent because it works. It makes us aware of every freaky thing that could go wrong if we take a risk. It protects us from making a mistake. But it has a price. As Wayne Gretzsky said, “I missed 100% of the shots I didn’t take.”
Overcoming fears takes a serious effort and is one of the hardest things on this list. I would like to ask Adam sometime about how he overcomes fear, because it takes a lot of courage to live life the way that Adam does. From the beginning on Idol, he was fearless. His performance at the AMAs was jaw-dropping to say the least. He remade his first album into a spine-tingling live show and took it around the world, finding his own financing. He (apparently) scrapped large portions of his upcoming album for a new sound. He subbed for Freddie Mercury and blew the roof off the theater. He gave his heart to a man from another country and culture.
Even his hair styles speak to a willingness to experiment and take risks. If Adam didn’t have 15 hairstyles in a year, no one would make fun of him about his hair. But just think what we would have missed!
8. Be your own front man. Everyone was so blown away by Adam’s performance at the EMAs, they started talking about Adam touring with Queen as the venerable band’s new front man. The money and exposure would be easy and enormous. But think about it: how did Queen get to be iconic? It sure wasn’t by piggy-backing off the creativity of previous generations.
This is another hard one. Adam walks a tightrope as a pop artist. Too different, and the industry labels you a freak and an outlier. Too much like everyone else and why bother? Though most of us aren’t in the public eye, we face the same dilemmas. In a society that enforces conformity, how do we walk our own roads? Adam inspires our respect and awe because he refuses to be like someone else. He’s always just Adam. At the least, we can be like Adam by carrying ourselves as a person who believes in their own equality and worth. We can work on standing tall, looking other people in the eye, and standing up for what we believe.
9. Have some chutzpah. The first time I ever saw Adam in my life, it was at the AMAs. I remember thinking, “That was terrible, but the guy sure has chutzpah.” For those who don’t know, chutzpah is a wonderful Yiddish word with many layers of meaning. The great Leo Rosten defined it as: “gall, brazen nerve, effrontery, incredible guts.” No one could disagree that a picture of Adam belongs next to that definition in the new edition of Rosten’s Yiddish dictionary!
Incredible guts are incredibly rare. Adam embodies the quote from Earl Warren: “Every worthwhile thing I did in my life, I caught hell for.” There are moments in everyone’s life when only sheer gall will carry you through – when you have to trespass in order to live with yourself. Remember Adam’s chutzpah at those times.
10. Ignore the scolds. There’s a good reason why people bury themselves behind cloaks of conformity. When you don’t, you get beat up and scolded. To lay your true self bare the way that Adam does is to make himself very vulnerable. There are a lot of people out there who find it disturbing when someone learns to be comfortable in their own skin. Sometimes we even scold ourselves.
For many of us, this may be the hardest page of all to take from Adam’s book. Frankly, I don’t know how he does it. Most of us like consensus and want to be agreeable. In this day and age, that generally means making your self-expression so toothless and bland that it couldn’t possibly offend anyone. Adam doesn’t do that. He makes a bold statement with everything he does. He asks that we respect that he knows what he’s doing; he’s inclusive and cool with his fans without indulging people who just want to gripe.
To sum up these 10 not-so-easy lessons: Adam challenges us to live a better life just by the way he chooses to live his. As a human being, he is prone to error, frailty and imperfection. Yet he knows who he is. And in the process he has reminded us of who we are, and what we’re made of. Thanks, Adam.

Reading Between the (Head)Lines
1/15/2012 by NoAngel
Now that promo is kicking into gear and google alerts once again fill our inboxes, I realize how the same piece of information can be spun a hundred different ways, depending on the source. Unbiased journalism is a fiction, and the words (and photos) used in an article or celebrity gossip site expose the point of view of the writer and/or editor. It's easy to pick out the berts (VH1, Lyndsey Parker) and those who are not so much fans of Adam (GQ, P*rez). Let's take a look at a recent (imaginary) newsworthy event in Adam's life and see how this played out. The story: Adam was caught by paps exiting a hardware store in WeHo. The headlines:
JustlyJared: Adam Lambert and Very Adorable Boyfriend Sauli Koskinen Caught Shopping! Adam and his cutie pie boyfriend out buying stuff for their perfect house so that it can be even more perfect for this perfect couple. Check out the link below to listen to the new single for Lambert's soon-to-be smash hit upcoming album! (photos: 3 of Adam and Sauli; 5 close-ups of Sauli alone)
P*rez: Glambert Hangs Out With Tools! Glambert and his foreign honey go shopping and make it out of the store without a fistfight. Shocker! Comment anonymously below about how cool you are and how much you hate Adam and anyone else who isn't cool enough for you. (photo: Adam caught in mid-yawn, with horns drawn on)
DiQFashion: Adam Lambert Shops in Broad Daylight: Who Knew Vampires Could Do That?! American Idol runner up Lambert sports his usual dreary black on black Twilight-esque togs. News flash, Lambert—the groovy guys are all wearing corduroy pants and polo shirts to the sock hop. (photo: the least flattering photo of Adam they could find quickly).
John L. Oser of LehighValleyMusic: Adam Lambert Fails to Buy As Many Socket Wrenches As Selena Gomez. One of these days Lambert will live up to the potential he showed on American Idol and I won't come across as a passive-aggressive wanker, but today isn't that day. (photo: Adam photoshopped into a pic with David Archuletta)
Finland Daily Times: BB Sauli Koskinen Exchanges Loving Glances with Adam Lambert Exiting Hardware Store. [Many more Finnish words spelled Finnishly] (photo: a montage of pics of A/S from Disneyland onward)
Lindsee Parkerr: Is Lambert Going Post-Industrial With His New Album? The glammest Idol that ever glammed exits a hardware store, igniting speculation that his upcoming album Trespassing will really hammer home the dark rock glam death-frappuccino beats we've been waiting for him to nail. Prepare to have your heads blown to smithereens! Oh, and Durbin is awesome too! (photo: Adam posing with Lindsee)
And so on. Three years into this ride, we know many of the players. Berts are gonna bert, bashers are gonna bash. Read with care.
