After Ryan's little stunt yesterday I can feel myself being pissed all over again.
Why in fuck is being middle aged any sort of reason to be insulted?
Why is having middle aged fans an insult to a performer?
I RAGE against this.
Rather than being angry about this all day I will again post what I wrote on this topic a year and a half ago during the Glam Nation tour.
I am constantly dismayed by certain segments of the press that feel the need to comment on the age of people in an audience at a concert, sometimes to the point of ridicule. They are usually wrong in judging the demo of course, but somehow the meme of Adam's fans being largely "ladies of a certain age" has happened and I feel as if it does a great disservice to us as fans and to Adam as an Entertainer.
Here's what some of these younger reviewers do not (and cannot) understand. The essential "you"- the internal dialogue, the entity that lives inside your skin and speaks for you- does not change as you grow older. The girl that you were at age 20 is the same person you will be at age 50- trust me. You will be wiser, and hopefully you will have learned how to behave in public, but your essential "you" will not have changed one bit. The person that lives inside your mom's 50/60/70 year old body is the very same person that (theoretically) met your father, fell in love, had mad sex, and made you. These things don't change as you age. Your body changes, but your core self does not.
I am not saying that I approve of unseemly behavior by women of a certain age- of course I do not. But I certainly understand it. Circumstances can be so overwhelmingly intense that all your years of learning how to behave fall away and you feel like a schoolgirl again. Adam is surely intense enough sexually and charismatically to cause our learned self censorship to fall by the wayside. I would hope that I would never behave that way in public, but God knows I do it in the privacy of my own home with my husband as witness, and there is nothing wrong with that.
And I may not be speaking directly to you, but to the universe at large- cut the older women some slack. Our society is so focused on youth as a desirable feature that we deny older people their sexual selves and actually "Ewww!" at the thought of older people having sex. It's not "Ewwww!" at all- it is 100% "Ahhhh!". And while I am certain that no 27 year old man fantasizes about being lusted after by 50+ year old women, somehow I think Adam would approve of me getting my groove on in a healthy way with an appropriate partner.
And to the press- stop trying to make this a story.
What other artist's fan base is so intensely scrutinized and categorized?
Why is this done with Adam?
Is his appeal so hard to figure out?
Could it not be that he is just that good an Entertainer and many people of all sorts have the good sense to understand that?
I am the absolute picture of an "old lady fan" and would absolutely die of embarrassment should anyone take a photo of me at a concert and make some ugly ageist comment- and I would be more embarrassed for Adam than for me.
God knows if wishes could make it so we'd all look 22 and gorgeous, but the world just isn't that way.
That the press can make such comments and cause fans like me to feel self-conscious about my age while enjoying myself at an Adam concert is not right. Why does "middle-aged" automatically become an insult to both the fans and the performer? I feel that it is something they need to be called out on- in a calm and well reasoned manner, of course.

Older folks and all
I know Adam read this because I personally handed him a copy and he remembered it the next time I met him. That I may have in any miniscule way influenced how he thinks about the older portion of his fan base is certainly debatable , but then you never know.
I will add that any any any young person that thinks they will change on the inside as they age is in for a real awakening.
We are the same as you.
Same same same.
We feel happiness, we feel joy, we feel hurt, we love, we have multiple orgasms and rowdy sex and lust after gorgeous rock stars.
Same same same.
The only TEENY difference is that we have been alive longer.
ANYONE that thinks they have the right or need to tell me how to behave at a concert because of my age is gonna get smacked, I swear to God.
Decent behavior is decent behavior regardless of your age.
I hold everyone to the same standard of behavior at a concert or at a M&G or in the fucking street.
Call out the behavior but do not DARE call it because of the age of the fan.
Are there wack job older fans?
You bet.
Are there wack job younger fans?
Of course.
Anyone who says otherwise is deluded.
Sorry to be so ever loving angry about it but jeez louise, ENOUGH.
Just getting started here so I assume there are lots of comments to come on this post. My wish is that this post be ARCHIVED somewhere and hauled out as often as necessary!
VERY NICELY STATED BUDERSCHNOOKIE [sp?] and EVERY WORD IS TRUE. hugs
