Following the discussion about Adam and radio play, I did find this tweet. According to this fan Adam was black listed on radio stations. From all I‘ve seen over the past 8 years since becoming a fan, this sounds true. And it’s the reason, why the labels couldn’t push him further, even if they wanted. If the big radio bosses don’t want to play someone, then even the labels don’t stand a chance. And these radio bosses have many many radio stations beneath them, which are all connected. The radio stations don’t decide, who is played. It’s the big bosses, that make the list. And these bosses are still rather white conservative men, who were more than ready to blacklist Adam after the AMAs. There I said it. Wow! After all this time, I thought that was over!!! This is ridiculous. They play Sam Smith and Little Nas (both of whom have done over the top performances) There was a big to do about Sam and Kim's performance but just yesterday I hear Sam Smith on Z 100 and then there is Little Nas - blowup about his performance and he is played - can they move on..........

Hmm. The blacklist thing just doesn't sound right to me. Why would Adam be singled out when other LGBT artists have done performance far beyond what he ever did? Dunno.
So thrilled that Muffin Man is getting all this crazy media attention! Just goes to show that being on a silly goofball show can really pay off.

They originally would not give FYE much radio play, even before the AMA's, with it is "too suggestive" nonsense. Even Elvis Duran (who is gay) on Z 100 said he would not play it so it was effectively dead. But his label had already switched to WWFM on radio by the time he did the AMA's. WWFM got more play and went 2Xplatinum in the US and went to #10 on B100. IIHY did pretty well but not as well as WWFM. He was the only out gay man on radio at the time so his team had to work hard to get him radio play and past the conservatives but they did. Then his label head (who had been in his corner) was pushed out of his job and all of Adam's support went with him. But even then there was no radio boycott, but there was less of a label push and support and his radio play became tepid. One of the new heads gave an interview and said they saw Adam as more rock and pop/rock but Adam saw himself as pop so they would go with his vision and work to get him a #1 album. They achieved that #1 BB200 but there was no radio support and Trespassing quickly died (maybe that was by design). Would the new regime have worked harder for him if he had gone with their vision? We will never know. Besides the label head change, Jive was folded into RCA and the Jive stars (Britney, Pink, Timberlake, and Chris Brown) became the priorities for RCA. More established RCA artists like Kelly Clarkson continued to be supported. Later Sam came along and his label pushed hard for him on radio and it worked. By the time LNX came along, he had label support as well but hardly anyone cared as much about sexuality anymore. So Adam was never boycotted on radio he just stopped getting much of a radio push from whatever label he landed with. And without that the streaming numbers will suffer as well. But Adam found other ways to stay on the radar besides radio and remained successful and in demand in the US and internationally.

Little NasX and Sam Smith came much later than Adam. I didn’t say, he’s black listed now. And not by every radio station. But I really think that a lot of radio stations didn’t play him for „their personal reasons“.
