Welcome to the first Adamtopia astrology thread! I would like to inaugurate this thread with something which I hope is inspirational. It is a look at some fundamental ideas that underlie astrology.
Mankind has always had an instinctual and intimate relationship with the natural world - the boundaries of which extend beyond the limits of terrestrial earth and embrace the whole universe. The desire to understand and align to the natural world is essential for survival and security. The vehicles for understanding and creating an orderly relationship with the forces of nature are the sense organs and in modern times, their extensions in terms of tools and instrumentation. The sense of sight is primary and a metaphor for the all the others.
And so it was that our ancestors did what we do - they gazed at the heavens with wonder, curiosity and eventually, deep comprehension. They noticed that with each passing moment the heavens rotate like the turning of a cosmic kaleidoscope. Each turn creates a unique pattern – one that may not appear again for millennia. They cognized that the heavenly pattern present at the moment of a birth or inception indicates a unique trajectory for a person, a country or even an idea. It is as if the heavens are speaking and we have only to understand the language.
The sages of ancient India were among the earliest interpreters of the cosmic language, linking these patterns to human destiny and passing on their revelations as part of the unbroken 5000-year tradition known as Jyotisha, or Vedic Astrology. They passed on the stunning conclusion that the stars, our cosmic kaleidoscope, reveal the patterns generated by the interactions of all the laws of nature, from macrocosm to microcosm. Their core insight tells us of the holographic nature of reality: As in the whole, so in the part.
Thus, the patterns of the heavens are mirrored throughout manifestation. In fact, the reason we look to our cosmic counterparts is not only because they chart a higher order of reality, but also because their motion is slow and predictable enough that we can study the holographic patterns with relative ease.
Astrology is a study of the lights in the vault of heaven, but it is also the development and application of the inner light of knowledge and discrimination. Both outer and inner light illumine the mystery of the cosmic patterns and help to align us with nature. Astrology is therefore an “Old World science”, ordering our world and empowering us with reverence for the mystery of underlying spirit.

Thanks to all of you that have sent messages to me and are excited about the potential of this thread.
I would love to get some input on your expectations but I also need to feedback to you what you most likely already know about me which is that I am not a Western astrologer. In some ways, I think it is kind of cool that I represent another viewpoint at a time when duality is very lively in our community. Hopefully it will be a peep into a different reality.
Some of you might be curious as to how Vedic Astrology or Jyotisha is different from Western astrology. So I thought I would do a series of posts on exactly that question.
Before I do that, however, I want to introduce a concept which has a wonderful Sanskrit name - adrishtha. This word is from a Sanskrit root which means "to see" but the letter "a" in front negates it so it winds up meaning that which is not seen. As I mentioned in my opening post, the sense of sight is so often used as a metaphor for all five senses. So adrishtha refers to that which cannot be accessed by the senses.
Astrology is one of many ways that man has tried to understand the "unseen" forces that seem to play such a major role in life. My teacher always likened us to fish swimming and thinking how great it was that we had control over our muscles. We think we are the ones taking ourselves here and there without realizing the power of the current in which we are swimming. It is always a dance between free will which is real and important and the underlying current called karma in the Indian tradition.
We can say then that astrology is a way to access the underlying karmic patterns and learn to align with the useful ones and work on those that may be more obstructive. In either case, we learn valuable lessons.

Theosgma,
I am not familiar with Vedic astrology, but I strongly resonate with the concepts you have so far posted. At this point it feels premature to pose any questions, but know I am reading with enthusiasm!
Thanks!!

Theosgma REALLY enjoying reading your comments so far. Looking forward to more.! Wondering how you first became interested/exposed to Vedic astrology. And yes, am interested in hearing the diff btwn this an western astrology and why there is a difference. Thx for doing this and thx to Q3 for setting up the thread and posting a link in the daily news Hi lanat and others Thanks for your responses so far. So much going on over on the News thread, I know most of us are just hanging on every interview! Would love to answer your question lanat. Back in the early 70's, I became heavily involved in the whole wave of Eastern teachings through the TM movement. Quite a bit later (1991), there was one of those searing, life events in which I came within a breath of losing my only child. I was reeling and trying to make sense over what happened when someone suggested that I consult an astrologer who was in the very tradition that I found so meaningful. That consultation changed my entire life. I felt like I had been in a dark room and someone turned on the light. It seemed that my deepest truth woke up in me and I knew what I needed to do in this life. I immediately sought a teacher as I knew the valid way of learning these subjects was through a real live adept who could help cultivate my mind. I was on fire to learn this and help others the way this had helped me. In addition to this dramatic direct experience, what also makes Vedic Astrology compelling is the tradition in which it is based. This is one of the main differences between Vedic and Western. Vedic Astrology is embedded in an unbroken 5000 year old oral tradition that gives beautiful and holistic support to the interpretation of a chart. The profound vision of wholeness and deep insights into the nature of what causes human pain and suffering is applicable to anyone in any country, time or religion. That tradition also provides incredible tools and specific recommendations for helping a person work with the karmic patterns unearthed through lens of a Vedic Astrology chart.
