Just a note in passing.
I visited the concentration camp at Buchenwald. I stayed as long as I could stand to read the individual accounts of those who had been imprisoned and died there, jews, homosexuals, pow's, roma, jehovah's witnesses, freemasons, members of the communist party, the list goes on. I've walked along a fence that looks identical to the one at Auschwitz Birkenau.
When it was first posted here awhile ago my mind said "WW II POW camp" and I had a gut negative reaction and so I scrolled, without taking time to look closely and make the connection.
In my opinion I don't think anyone needs to browbeat themselves and I'd be leery about jumping to conclusions about others lack of historical awareness (or caring) based on not immediately recognizing a specific background photo. (It's possible that the creator of the photoshop just image googled "barbed wire fence" and didn't get any context.)
But really I just feel empathy for how this incident is unintentionally painful. I respect and honor people's feelings and I want offer hugs (which is very unlike me, but we all have our days).
