Oh my God you guys...coconut marshmallows!! Is this another one of those American nasties like 'white gravy' on biscuits or fried Okra!!?? EWWWWWW! Hey - can't have a decent gumbo w/o the okra!!! Admittedly I like *brown* gravy on my biscuits..... ;D Down south it is not "white gravy." It is "red-eye gravy." Don't know why. But to be authentic one must add sausage in the gravy, and I think use the sausage grease rather than butter in the recipe. Not being a native of the south, that is what people tell me.

And brown gravy goes on mashed potatoes or roast beef.... white gravy with lots of black pepper belongs on biscuits. And coconut anything is pure heaven !!! [grin] I bet you like grits too.

I know y'all like that white gravy but seriously....it is not such a developed taste as it lacks developed taste, IMHO....sorry The okra...it is the slime....not the taste...maybe I did something wrong but.....ooooooohhh the stuff of nightmares. Marmite...yes it is yeasty and salty but sour...no....it is nirvana on hot buttered toast@@ mmmm Treacle...molasses toffee and Poutine!! that is a heart attack on wheels but it is sooooo good. There is a vid of someone buying Adam some Poutine when he was in Montreal, I think. It is home-made french fries, covered in cheese curds that all melt and get gooey, and then covered in brown gravy. It is really, really, really good.

LOL!! All the different types of gravy. Sausage gravy on toast!! Yummy!! All ya gotta do is fry some sausage and add some flour & milk. When it thickens, make some toast to put it on. Fry an egg, and throw it on there too!! hahahaha!!
Yummy!!

I have friends from Alaska that love that stuff and were so disappointed in me when I didn't share their passion. But they had the same negative attitude towards Marmite that I sense from about here! ....but we would all agree on Poutine..I know it..

Rey-eye gravy is made by deglazing the pan you fried a thick slice of country ham in with coffee. The ham steak is often fried in butter. Usually served with grits. Southern style white gravy is a white sauce base that is often flavored with sausage bits and fat. And "always" has a ton of black pepper. In Northeast Mississippi, for breakfast a local staple is chocolate gravy -- Hot chocolate sauce served over hot, freshly baked biscuits. Better than cinnamon rolls. ETA: Now I am hungry!!

Q3....thanks for that....now that I see your recipe for red-eye gravy I remember that these same Alaska friends [now in Arkansas] make this and it is really good! Maybe the trouble with the white gravy is also that I am not crazy about much pepper....different strokes...
