[looks at previous post critically] On a completely nit-picky editorial note, are album titles supposed to underlined or bolded? I'm assuming songs, like chapter titles, are supposed to be in quotes. Sorry, working on a reference section right now, and these style guides are staring me in the face. WOW I know the answer --- Albums in ITALIC Song titles and tracks in QUOTES

Underline is low tech--as in handwriting and typewriters.

Oh and also wanted to say that we don't know the plan--maybe they had a plan to drop single 2 right before album anyways? I mean he did say MAAAAYBE when someone asked him abt that so.....yeah A second single would be amazing! BTIKM isn't exactly the most thrilling lead in to Trespassing after all.. I mean gosh, most of the album tracks on FYE are better :-/ ummm that is YOUR *opinion*. Like I said, it isn't everyone's cuppa but it is a good song and got great reviews (pop ear candy anyone?) and we have no proof that an uptempo would have had an easier time at all. He isn't a radio darling yet, and may never be, so we kinda need to let the song do it's thing.

Great, interesting post Q3, and you know I love to analyze too!! ;D So, I am going to give my opinion on a few of your points. 1) I don't think the Dec release had anything to do with some internet soft release campaign. RCA has bigger stars than Adam, with bigger fanbases, and more Twitter followers. Why would they pick Adam for some experimental internet media launch? After many weeks of thinking about this, I truly feel the Dec. release was to get BFM completely off the radar. There were DJs and press that really believed this album and single were Adam's new music. It worked! BFM has completely disappeared! 2) If we look at what is happening this week, for the promo, IMO it is easy to see that all of this was scheduled for a January single release. I would guess the original date might have been January 10th, which was the first full non holiday week. That Dec. date has really messed with our minds on where this song should be. 3) BTIKM sales are in line for where it is on the radio charts. Yes, it is moving slower than we like. But if we use Jan. 10th as the radio date instead of Dec. it is doing OK. I don't see how we can use Dec. as a radio date anyway when 2 weeks of frozen charts kicked in the day it went for release. 4) A little correction on the adds dates. This coming Tuesday will make 2 weeks after the CHR date. We are not at 2 weeks yet. Adam is visiting Z100 on that 2 week date. Do I think Z will add that day? Actually, "no." I think they will add on the 21st which gives the song a full month before the album drops and a full month for all the other stations to jump on the Z100 bandwagon. They will do that too. When Z starts spinning, others will too. (Note: Z100 added IIHY 3 weeks after Q did.) 5) Spins are increasing, not decreasing That is a good thing! Now, what do I agree with you on? 1) I love BTIKM! But, if so many reviewers have said it is the one song that doesn't represent the album, then why choose that as the lead single, RCA?! Adam said, briefly in one interview, almost under his breath that he had wanted Cuckoo as the first single. With the lyrics of Trespassing, not sure that would have been the right choice for 1st single. I see it as #3. 2) Why did they choose BTIKM then? I think they thought the strategy they used for Kelly (MKIA followed by Stronger) would work with Adam, forgetting that Kelly has 10 years of radio cred behind her and gets her adds easily. 3) I agree they may need to release a 2nd sinlge but I am willing to give BTIKM more time. If Z does not add on Feb 21st or Feb 28th, then "Yes" they need to release a new single. But that still gives them 2 1/2 weeks to wait and see. I think a new single, the first week of March would be OK. Not optimal, but still OK. We know Adam is doing Idol this year and my bet is for the March 22nd show. Adam's fanbase will take care of first week sales. A new single on March 6th, while not the optimal time, if it is as good as we have heard, with an Idol appearnce and radio backing, it will do its job. With all of that being said, after seeing the video, I think BTIKM might be the perfect song to introduce the light and dark concept of the album. It also introduces the softer side of Adam that we all know, but casual and new fans would not know. How many of them have ever seen Adam dressed down and without make-up? Probably very few. I have never had 100% faith in RCA's marketing plans or their single selections! Since I follow the careers of other Idols, like Kelly and Cook, there have been many WTF moments for me. My biggest WTF for Adam's release is why didn't they have listening parties with the US DJs, like they did in the UK, to help pick the single that the PDs would most want to play. It seems so basic and yet it seems like they didn't do that. :-/ Lastly, I see nothing in your post that would imply "hating." I think they are all great discussion points! Thank you for having a place that allows us to do this. : Damn, I took so long to write this, you all are 2 pages past the comment I was replying to already! Note: Had to edit much typo spelling errors. :-[

I also wanted to say really quickly that I wonder why ANYONE thinks that Adam wiill have an easier time with a different single? So far it seems like a lot of people whine and say that a different single like Cuckoo or Trespassing would be totally different and smash right away, etc etc, BUT....1) We haven;t even heard these songs yet so how do we even know if we would actually even like them 2.) Adam has never had an easy time on radio, and until he has at least one big mega smash I can't see him having an easier time. I think we need to adjust our expectations and realize that even if he did drop an amazing utempo tomorrow, it may still be a slow grower. He may ALWAYS be one. Who knows. I agree with what you have said here Chunkey, and I also wonder about payola or whatever it is called these days. Clearly record companies cut loose with the big bucks for some singles and not for others. I don't know how these decisions get made but there's no way I believe PDs just think we all want to hear Ri's "We Found Love" literally twice every frickin' hour. If RCA doesn't cut loose with the do-re-mi, why WOULD it be any different for another single. Food for thought. Yes, I think it's only partly about the single and MOSTLY about radio's reluctance to play Adam (in the US at least) - I would have hated if they had opened up this era with an incredible song like Trespassing and he still didn't get played ! ??? :

Such wonderful new interview videos today. I am amazed that there are only 4 pages. These interviews are great!
As to Adam getting the recognition and air play we all think he so richly deserves, I have come to the conclusion that Adam is not, and probably never will be, for everyone's taste. (Shaking my head in bewilderment). Why? 1. Some folks simply do. not. hear. what I hear in his voice. They do not discern the difference between his voice and other pop voices. They do not hear the purity and ring. The control and subtlety. They do not hear the resonance. They do not notice the clear articulation or the interpretive arc in the songs. I would venture to guess that they do not FEEL the voice as I do. Their bodies do not naturally resonate with the frequencies of his voice. I think it goes beyond taste and style preferences, and is intrinsic and organic.
2. Adam does not and will not fit into a comfortable box. Not in his singing style, in his choice (or lack of choice) of genre, not in his presentation, not in his appearance, not in his persona. The only predictable things about Adam are that he will be unpredictable, and he will put on a hell of a performance. Some folks are uncomfortable without boxes or categories. Some folks are uncomfortable with someone who is so obviously unique and undefinable. Who is so not the boy next door (except when he is).
3. Dare I say it? Adam is too complex for some folks' taste. Complex and multi-layered vocally, musically, in terms of image, in terms of personality. One cannot "get" Adam with just a casual listen or look. It takes time and focus to see all his dimensions. Like the Berlin drawing he did. At first glance you think, "Wow. I didn't know he could draw like that. Guy has talents I was not aware of." But, it was only after I read the comments here about all the imagery in the picture, all the cultural references, all the "hidden" facets that I could fully appreciate the work. We fans have taken the time.... lots of it. But, some folks just like to dance and boogy, or put on some homogenous, generic music as background to their daily lives. Adam ain't background.
4. Yes, there is the whole "gay, gay, gay" thing. But, I am not convinced that is as big a factor as some think it is. Still, that may always be an aspect. It is what it is.
Having accepted that Adam will never be for everyone, I believe, strongly, that he will have an enduring and successful career. I believe HE is very happy doing just what he is doing right now. He is artistically challenged and satisfied. If he ain't angsting, neither will I.

I am torn regarding RCA's decision making process. On one hand, they seem to be following closely the strategy that they used with Kelly Clarkson. They opened with the more HAC MKIA, small bit of US radio promo, followed by a couple of pretty intense weeks of overseas promo. A few months later, and they release the obvious smash Stronger. This was a very successful strategy for Kelly. On the other hand, Adam doesn't have Kelly's radio history.
What makes most sense to me at this point is that RCA felt BTIKM was the closest thing they had to a radio "sure thing." While I'm going to love Cuckoo and Trespassing and certainly critics are going to love these songs. RCA must have reason to think they are "risky" for radio. Otherwise, leading-off with one of these is a no-brainer for Adam. I can see a situation where we get Naked Love and the Bruno song as singles before Cuckoo. My other speculation is that they had a deal with Claude to release the song. Or, they didn't want uptempo Adam competing with Kelly's stronger. But bottom line, I no longer think there is any guarantee that that those uptempo songs the UK press heard will be welcomed easily on US radio.
I do hate that they are leading off with HAC Adam (I don't care if radio likes this safe Adam better!) Heck, even Kris Allen is getting a song that clearly seems aimed for CHR; and I don't see him as pop at all.
This post isn't meant to angst. I really have no angst at this point. But is is interesting to try and analyze RCA's strategy. Certainly there was some research behind choosing BTIKM. All I really want out of this era is an album that is at least as successful as FYE. And I want a song like Trespassing to be given a shot---and if people don't like it or get it then fine. Just don't let another Fever sit there doing nothing while you release an old Bruno song to HAC.
