OK. I've been listening to Kiss108 Boston every morning in hopes of hearing BTIKM. nada. Today they talked about Adam and the Queen gig in their Entertainment Report..."you're familiar with Adam Lambert...we play his music...he did the Kiss Concert...really friendly, very very very nice guy...you wouldn't bring him home to mom [obligatory lame joke : ]...he's delaying the release of his new CD, but the single's already out...blah blah blah..." so I emailed them and asked why they aren't playing the single and Jim (producer/music director) answered right away, "I'm on it, coming soon, I promise!"so let's give it a chance! San Francisco Bay Area peeps!! Adam's losing spins on Alice and 101.3.. Please keep requesting! *KLLC-FM at (800) 400-3697 request line / text 25423 / online request form at
mediabase.com/mmrweb/7/stationplaylistrequest.asp?c_let=KLLC-FM
Twitter: twitter.com/#!/AliceRadio *KIOI-FM at (800) 800-1013 request line / online request form at mediabase.com/mmrweb/7/stationplaylistrequest.asp?c_let=KIOI-FM
Twitter: twitter.com/#!/Star1013 I just did Alice. The Star link didn't work. I hear the song on Alice and I hear WWFM on Star. I don't listen to the radio much though....

(Side note: After all, it DOES feel rather futile right now. I and thousands of others have been voting and requesting their heads off and gotten nowhere. I WOULD actually like to know whether there is a point to it, or whether we are just being used ... and if so for what purpose? So far the only argument I've seen in support of requesting and voting is childlike faith, along the lines of "he's knows if you've been bad or good/So be good for goodness sake." If there is more to it I'd love to know.) OK, I'll try to explain to the best of my understanding why I don't believe radio requesting is futile or based on faith. Sorry this is long, but I do hope people read it.(but first a personal thank you to wingsofbutterflies and slapdash larue and everyone else who is like, f*ck it, imma do what little I can and take five minutes out of my very busy day to support Adam's current single, the stations currently playing it, and the stations that might just be on the verge.) ----------------------- 1) This is the current single, we don't know when we will get a second single. That's a fact. all the speculation about a second single is only that, speculation. We have to work with what we have right now, and I personally don't want to sit there waiting for a bus that nobody knows when is coming. I'm going to walk in the direction of my destination, more radio play for Adam. ----------------------- 2) One thing I find helpful is to adjust my own lens. If the big picture is getting me down, I don't worry about it, I celebrate small victories, and work extra hard on my own little piece of geography and requesting there (as well as in larger stations) So some small victories: just this morning during business hours so far: new spinners:
WWWM Star 105.5 Toledo, OH this is a monitored HAC owned by Cumulus! It apparently spun twice today.
WRQX Mix 107.3 Washington, DC HAC, is this one of toby k's stations? are pigs flying?----------------------- 3) If my little patch of geography is frustrating me, I look at the larger world, at the fact that BTIKM is #15 on the Billboad Hot 100 in Japan, for example, and rocking South Africa, and cheer that while keeping on. ----------------------- 4) Even a few more spins can move Adam up the HAC chart and make his benchmark higher before the song is retired. You know how many spins currently separate BTIKM from the #31 song above it on the HAC chart? 2 spins. It's pretty obvious that individual requests could get AT LEAST that many. ----------------------- 5) Even a few more spins during heavy listening hours might bring in a new buyer or bert. If a station hasn't spun the song, local requests show interest and demand for both the song and the artist. They may be planning to play BTIKM a little later, or it may factor in when the next single comes along. ----------------------- 6) For the stations like Sirius and the San Francisco spinners that have been doing a mighty job of spinning the song, let's know them that it's appreciated, that they made the right call, with thanks and continuous requests. They aren't chopped liver. ----------------------- 7) I agree with using several methods to contact the stations, but I have had my local requests off of mediabase forms played (I put in my city and zip, and fudged my age a little ;D). I request several songs aside from BTIKM too, but usually not songs that are in competition with him right now. I pick from Past Favorites for the other songs. So either my local station suddenly rediscovered the joys of 'Golddigger' and 'Kryptonite' or they are paying attention to my form :D ----------------------- So off my soapbox, and hey, if any of that makes sense to anyone, you might want to do your local requests : atop.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=strategy&action=display&thread=650

sort of OT here but...does anyone here have academic journal access to Taylor and Francis? Here is the citation and link to what may be an interesting article: 'This is why mainstream America votes against gays, Adam Lambert': contemporary outness and gay celebrity A Brady - Celebrity Studies, 2011 - Taylor & Francis This article utilises Adam Lambert in an analysis of the politics of contemporary gay celebrity. It positions Lambert within a media context in which displays of same-sex attraction are increasing, even as the attachment of those displays to identity is rendered ... Related articles I have academic access to journals, but this particular one isn't available as a full text article at my university. I can order a copy of it, but it will take a couple of days to get it.

It was said early on: BTIKM is an 'unconventional lead single' and that statement often had a skeptical ring to it, as in....will this really work?'
So those critical voices were there from the get-go, not only now, after the fact. Yet, Adam and RCA went with BTIKM anyway. Question is why?
I think BTIKM did achieve a few things:
a) it allowed Adams image transformation to play out in public b) it is the 'overture' to an album which hangs together as a complete concept and not only a collection of songs c) it set up the concept of duality via a brilliant video d) it is doing quite well in some countries (eastern EU, South Africa, etc)
All this is nice and great. But it has nothing to do with the singles business that radio is all about, especially in UK and US. BTIKM as a singles track did not get much play on CHR and barely hangs on on HAC.
Question: Did the PDs tell RCA that this was going to be the case and RCA went with that lead single anyhow? Or did the PDs talk up the chances of the song back in Nov/Dec, took the payola/promotion or whatever we are calling it these days, and then not keep their end of the bargain to play the song?
That is what I want to know?
Re: the rest of the discussion...homophobia...AI impact....all true and overall relevant for Adam, I agree, but this did not change in the last 2 months.
It's time for the overture to be done and the curtain to open. This last minute mucking with the album tracks and last minute Dr Luke pandering is not making me happy, tbh.
To me Adam is the rainbowfish that tries to swim in shark-infested waters. Radio PDs are sharks. They are nasty and feast off of others. They respect no one. They smell blood and they come. These sharks either ignore him or outright snap at him. The fish is fast and clever, but he is also exhausting himself in doing so.
It feels like we fans are protecting the rainbow fish while at the same time drawing the sharks attention to him, because the way the game is rigged, he needs the shark's attention and approval to pass through their waters...and yes, I do agree that Adam wants to swim through that water. He wants that mainstream pop approval.
But I do not believe that BTIKM ever had the purpose to get him that pop mainstream approval. The question is just, what purpose did it have? Based on the unusual roll-out (timing as well as lack of early promotion), I think it really was just meant to lay some groundwork, prepare the soil.
But even I have trouble reconciling this my own observation here with anything that I have ever heard or understood about the recording biz. This album better be a complete miracle album to afford such a lead-in. And if this album really is that great, this lead-in single will eventually have its permanent role.
In times of dwindling album sales, when the album as an artform itself is an endangered species, I think that creating a concept album that has an overriding arch and storyline to it was probably as much distinctly novel as well as forward-thinking. The recording industry needs the album as an artform and ultimately the album is what butters the bread of all parties involved.
But such a concept will go right past a single-minded (double-entendre fully intended) radio business.
Whether this is really what BTIKM was about, we will only find out later. For now, I am dutifully requesting, but I have very little confidence that I am doing anything besides poke at sharks who are already annoyed at us poking.
I hope RCA clarify what they are up to sooner rather than later.

Is anyone familiar with the children's story about the Rainbow Fish? It is a very popular allegory about not thinking you are better than everyone else, but sharing your attributes with others in order for them to accept you and be your friend. A very good lesson for kids. However, something about the story always bothered me. See, the Rainbow Fish WAS the most beautiful fish in the ocean, with gorgeous jewel-toned scales. All the other fish wanted his scales. In order to be accepted by them, the Rainbow Fish gives each of the other fish a beautiful scale, until he only has one left--- the same amount as all the other fish. Then, they all play happily together. It seems to me that the story is not saying you need to share yourself with others as much as it is saying you must strip yourself of your individuality and beauty in order to "fit in." You must make everyone equal - even tho' it requires you to painfully extract the very thing that makes you the special person you are. Why am I writing about the Rainbow Fish on Adamtopia? Because it seems to me that there are those out there who do not like Adam, will not play with Adam (or play his songs) BECAUSE Adam is uniquely himself, uniquely beautiful. In order to get his songs played on the radio he has to strip himself of those unique qualities in order to sound like everything else on the radio. I would much rather Adam stay true to himself and make his kind of music his way, even if it means he does not become a mega-star with songs playing every hour and soaring up to the top of the charts. I would much prefer that Adam gets the critical acclaim and recognition and has healthy sales and a reasonable profit. I'm not saying it is an "either/or" situation. There is always the possibility that his unique voice and musicianship will catch on and rage thru the pop music world like wild-fire. But, if it doesn't, I never want him to compromise his voice, his style, his musicianship in order to look/sound like every other fish in the sea. IMHO. YMMV I believe the pic is from "Black or White".

I hope someone gets it as I'd love to read it. Yeah, me and everyone else LOL. I just ordered it, but won't be able to report back for a few days. It looks like it's about 12 pages long, so we'll see how much of it is really about Adam and how much Adam is just the attention grabber for mind-numbing academic rambling.
