10 Predictions about what Adam might do – whataya think?
3.6.11 by Q3
It is impossible for me to look forward to the coming week without thinking about what Adam’s upcoming Idol performance will be like. Well, maybe not impossible for “normal” people, but certainly impossible for me.
We know that it will be an acoustic version of “Aftermath” – unless the press release was a double reverse just to fool everyone and I really doubt that. The only other two certainties are that whatever Adam does it will be a surprise and I will love it. Here are a few predictions…
(Actually, there are 3 certainties – the 3rd certainty – most of my predictions will not come true. Now I never claimed to be a gypsy – although I have moved around the country like one!)
Gypsy Adam (just for fun)
The biggest surprise: If Adam comes out and does an exact copy of the GNT arrangement and staging, it will be great but the biggest surprise to me. I expect something new. But if there is nothing new, I will be pleased because I think the GNT version is perfect for Idol. Prediction #1: There will be something we haven’t seen before.
The Lyrics and Meaning will matter: I expect Adam to do an intro to the song, may be a chat with Ryan. Prediction #2: Before he performs, Adam will explain what the song is about, why he wrote it and tell people about The Traver Project version. The lyrics will matter.
New arrangement element: Crawling out on that limb a bit. Prediction #3: I am expecting the basic arrangement to be the GNT Acoustic Aftermath version (Monte + Guitar) but I expect Adam to change it up in some way. I plan to be surprised…and delighted by whatever twist he comes up with. But I know this will be a happy, joy-filled performance – so perhaps he will crank up the second half a bit.
Acappella section: Perhaps I am predicting this because I love that small bit at the end, but I think that Adam enjoys it, too. And it was clearly a crowd favorite part of GNT. Prediction #4: He will include an acappella section. It could be in a different part of the song, but it will be present.
Thoughtful production: Whatever else, Adam always has a big presence on the stage. Give him a chair, some blue lights and a bit of fog – and some Adam magic – and it is a big production. Prediction #5: He will include one, big, dramatic and new element. It will be something that sets the emotional context for the performance.

The important stuff: What about his hair, make-up and costume? He’ll look great! Prediction #6: I am expecting Adam to show up with a natural, accessible look with a “rock” edge. Prediction #7: Something from Skingraft will be involved. Prediction #8: He will have only one necklace on. Prediction #9: Adam will be wearing one item designed by Alexander McQueen.
The Voice: A safe bet. Prediction #10: Focus of the performance will be on Adam’s voice. If Adam seems to have learned one thing from the past year performing for fans and getting thousands of reviews, people love his voice. He knows to make sure it is front and center.
In case you hadn’t noticed: On Thursday Adam will be performing a song on Idol that he co-wrote –[ “Aftermath” written by: Adam Lambert, Alisan Porter, Ferras, Ely Rise] – and arranged by Adam Lambert. Hopefully, this performance will convince some Idol viewers who think of Adam as “only” a singer, that he is a talented songwriter and musician.
Whataya think? So how do you think I did? Probably not that well because Adam is hard to predict. All I know is that after the performance whatever he has chosen to do will almost certainly be perfect. So are you willing to crawl out on the limb with me? Post your predictions in the thread and we’ll see who has a functioning crystal ball!
Sing Me An Anthem…
3/06/11 by NoAngel
Adam’s upcoming performance of Aftermath on American Idol comes in the wake of the very splashy unveiling of Lady Gaga’s latest single Born This Way. Her song has been lauded as the current “gay anthem,” and while it is certainly the one which has garnered the most attention, it rides a wave of empowerment songs from today’s pop divas. But I think there are significant differences between Adam’s song and its peers.
First, Aftermath is sung by a gay man. Maybe “all the girls are bi,” but as Adam points out when speaking with Perez Hilton, he is the only gay singer in this group. Bi or straight, there’s nothing wrong with a woman singing about acceptance and pride. Most everyone has times when they are in the out-group and facing adversity. But let’s face it—there is something very powerful (and unprecedented) about a gay man singing from his own personal experience.
I also see an important difference in the message of Aftermath compared to the other current empowerment anthems. In Born This Way, Gaga tells us “We are all born superstars,” and that you should “Just love yourself and you’re set.” Ke$ha says “You know we’re superstars. We R who we R.” Jessie J, in Who You Are, sings “It’s okay not to be okay,” and “There’s nothing wrong with who you are!” while P!nk implores “Pretty, pretty please/ Don’t you ever, ever feel/ Like you’re less than Fuckin’ Perfect.”
So we are encouraged to accept and love who we are. Awesome. But then what? Well, we’re encouraged to seek out other “freaks” and party. “Rejoice and love yourself today!” says Gaga. “Ignite the light/And let it shine/Just own the night/Like the Fourth of July” (Katy Perry in Firework). “So raise your glass if you are wrong/In all the right ways/All my underdogs, we will never be, never be/Anything but loud/And nitty gritty dirty little freaks…We can always, we can always/party on our own…” (P!nk – Raise Your Glass). “Hot and dangerous/If you’re one of us then roll with us.” (Ke$ha)
These songs acknowledge the difficulty of being different and implore/encourage listeners to own and celebrate who they are. This is very important. Unless you are able to accept yourself, imperfections and all, it is impossible to move forward. But self-acceptance is not enough. And at some point the party ends and real life begins, and unless you take the next step, self-acceptance and pride can turn into nothing more than stubborn defiance and unfocused rebelliousness.
Aftermath takes us one step further. It’s not just about waving your freak flag, but about moving towards what you want in life. In the It Gets Better video, Adam says, “It gets better, but it’s up to you.” He tells listeners that they need to put effort into their journey, a message echoed in Aftermath. Like the divas, his song also speaks of self-acceptance (“Don’t be afraid of what’s inside”) and the fact that others can relate and are there to support you (“Anytime anybody pulls you down/Anytime anybody says you’re not allowed/Just remember you are not alone.”)
But there is also a call to action—“Take a step before you leap,” and “Think of what could be if you rewrite the role you play.” This is a song to encourage you to move forward, even if by only a small step at first, and tells you that you are the creator of your own destiny. It also says that the answer is not to build up a wall around yourself, but to connect with others. “Before you break you have to shed your armor” means that you have to risk being vulnerable in order to transform. When he tells us to “Take a trip and fall into the glitter,” he is saying that we must take that journey towards our goals, and also that a stumble along the way is okay. Life, like glitter, is messy and hard to control, but you have to get into it and risk making mistakes. And from those risks and mistakes we gain character and strength and beauty. We become glitterier!
Finally, there is a message of positivity in Aftermath that goes beyond just finding your in-crowd. Pay it forward—“Tell a stranger that they’re beautiful/So all you feel is love…”
Yes, it’s great to “put your paws up” and to “raise your glass,” but it’s even better to reach for your goals with both hands. The message of Aftermath is-- Don’t just be… Do! Don’t just accept… Live!
Now that is an anthem worth singing.
