Down the rabbit hole once again, watching the Jezebel performance of the new songs, and then the EMAs one more time. What struck me this time was how absolutely enthralled ADAM is with singing and performing for an audience. It's obvious to me that this is what he lives for. This is his drug, his high, his completion. He commits himself totally in that moment, that phrase, that soaring note, that funky beat, that tender, vulnerable passage. He gives his all, the audience takes it in, revels in it, and returns it to him. I am reminded of how he finished the "fill in the blank." "Music is ____" He responded, "Music is air." Essential to his being, his existence.
There was a brief dance moment in Chokehold, I think, where he did a move that I recognized. I had seen child Adam do the same move in the home movie of his lipsyncing to something. He has been preparing for this his whole life.
Certainly, this is a powerful part of Adam's appeal as a performer. We can't help but get swept up in his consuming joy and passion. He makes us want to listen to music again.... or at least HIS music. His performance.

I liked it, too. Toby is such a fan boy in a good way. He appreciates Adam's artistry and is not shy to say so. He also cares about Adam, the person, being concerned that Adam has his privacy and away time. Having said that, Adam is a master at shaping the interview to fit his agenda, and not getting pulled off track. Also, in keeping it positive and grateful, when he could have agreed with Toby that the paps and fans are a pain. Adam just won't go there. I am sure that there are times that Adam is highly frustrated and even pissed about some of the media, and even some of the fan antics, but, he doesn't air that. That's something I admire about him. We all have challenges in our lives, but, it is how we deal with them and how we "spin" them that makes the difference. Adam said in one recent Q&A that when you are depressed it helps to think of all the good things you have. He doesn't only talk that, he believes it and lives it. He turns things into positivity. The adversity he uses to drive him harder, to find new creativity, to look at what he has and what he can achieve. LOL I liked the interview because Adam was calm and classy and artfully dodged all the shit Toby kept trying to throw at him. Toby kept trying to bait Adam into talking trash about his fans, former Idols, paps, etc, but Adam deftly deflected all of that and came across as gracious and unruffled. Toby seems like a sad, miserable man who gets off on the little ~power he has. I think he's insecure. I didn't quite see what he did as baiting, not in a hostile sense, anyway. I saw it as sycophantic... To me he seemed to be trying too hard to be Adam's "pal" -- straining to develop some sort of connection (and ugh-- intimacy) by creating a bond. You know-- "I understand what you're going thru, aren't we simpatico." Fell flat. His flail felt genuine and I think he likes Adam-- but he was trying way to hard to ingratiate himself w him. That's why he comes across as disingenuous or phony. As always, Adam turned it into a win.
