Not sure where to put this post --- daily, masterclass, Idol. Oh well, tell me to move it if it is in the wrong place.
I don't understand why I am so defensive and pissed when folks compare other singers/Idol contestants to Adam. I mean, I know that someone else succeeding will not take anything away from Adam. I know that there is not gonna be an Adam version 2.011 to replace him. I know that Adam is not just the celebrity pop star du jour. I know that he has an extraordinary voice and talent.
Just listened to the audition again, and remember first hearing it. I was kinda watching Idol for some mindless entertainment, but not paying enough attention to get too creeped out by the terrible presentations/vocals. Adam's segment started and I heard him say he had been doing theater since he was a kid. Mmm, okay, so have lots of folks. Doesn't mean he is any good. In the audition room Paula says he was in the cast of Wicked. Okay, now that is interesting. Sounds like a professional production if he was in it for a year and a half. Maybe this guy CAN sing and dance. He's got my attention. I don't have to cover my ears and look away from the TV screen.
Bohemian Rhapsody --- oh, god, no. This could be BAD! Don't go there. Then, he opens his mouth and sings "Mama" and my head literally snaps up and my body leans forward. WTF??? As he continues I think my eyes widened and my mouth fell open. DAYUMMMM!!! What a beautiful voice, so nuanced, so controlled. When Paula says "I think you are a really good singer" my inner voice responds, "Ya THINK??? That's the understatement of the year!" Yup, folks, he had me at "Mama." Couldn't wait to hear more. I knew what he just sang was not a fluke. It was the real deal.
Now, two years further down the rabbit hole, I can honestly say I haven't heard any other singer whose voice I loved as much, who could do so many things with that instrument. Setting aside the showmanship, the glam, the gorgeous, sexy looks, even the personality, I would still be entranced by the voice alone. But, to have that coupled with everything else? Truly one of a kind.
Nope, no one can compare. No one can replace that. No one is a threat. I think I get defensive and pissed because people cannot recognize that what Adam does with his voice and his presence is so beyond others out there. By comparing him to clearly lesser artists (who may be very good in their own right), they are diminishing what Adam does.
Gotta just keep repeating the mantra, "Their loss, their loss." So glad that Adam's voice, his instincts, and his generous spirit are getting so much attention today with Aftermath.
I wrote a couple of days ago that I would be visiting my parents Thursday night and wasn't sure how I could watch his Idol performance. Well, Thursday night has turned into a major family reunion, so there is no way to ignore all those loved ones who have come to see me in order to watch Adam. Sigh. But, I will be marveling with you all in spirit.
