That's why it's confusing to a lot of people. We expect an apostrophe when we use a possessive. But the examples you gave are possessive nouns. Possessive pronouns don't have apostrophes. You have to think of "its" as being in the same category as "his," "her," "your," etc. His suit, her hair, your post. The word "its," with no apostrophe, is the possessive pronoun. Its tail. The word "it's" with an apostrophe is a contraction for "it is," and the apostrophe fills in for the missing "i" in "is." It's a nice day. I thought I knew it all.
Thank you Murly. One is never too old to learn something new. I did not know that about the possessive "it." Thank you for the info. This is a great place to learn. One of the most interesting things I've ever learned was on an As The World Turns posting board! Someone made a reference to a character "getting their just desserts." That's what I always thought the expression was, too--meaning that someone got the appropriate follow-up to their behavior. But then another poster pointed out that the expression is actually "getting their just deserts"--one s, not two. It has the same origin as the word "deserves"--in other words, the person is getting what they deserve. It's pronounced the same as "desserts" but has no relationship to that sweet treat we allow ourselves after a meal! I remember that after the correction was posted, another poster got all huffy and berated the poster for showing off, but many of us, including me, jumped in and said how glad we were to learn something new! As long as people aren't rude about it, I appreciate the opportunity to become better informed.

I don't know ... maybe I'm wishful thinking/projecting (if we get single announcement soon, I won't be able to do this anymore), but something about the Lena tweets are making me think that Adam not only knows the next single, but he's ready to bust the doors down with it.
I'm on team, #willsupportanything and DO really like NCOE and NL, but I LOVE "Trespassing" and "Cuckoo" and can see him busting through with full choreography, backup singers, etc. I just get the feeling something is in the works with what Brian, Lena, Octavia and Keisha and the rest of the band ...
Oh, another tweet from Lena to Brian:
LenaG678BAM: So gr8 to finally meet you @brianlondon.. Your vision is a deep & rare! Looking forward to seeing your smile again soon! Peace, Light & LOVE

ETA What does she mean by "I think Adam Lambert just might be the 2nd coming" ? I know the phrase of the second coming has something to do with Jesus... but I will just take it as the second coming for this generation.... after Elvis.... or MJ... or Freddie??? LOL

I enjoy reading what the lyrics mean to each of you. I find it fascinating. I loved the performance and I can hardly wait to view it on TV. This is a little OT but I was browsing and I popped into another blog just to get some of their opinions of the performance. As far as Adam's performance, they all loved it, however, there were some opinions about the backup singers that I found to be a little offensive. Everyone has a right to their opinion but I guess that I have always felt that you should be respectful. Some thought that they didn't fit with Adam( as in big women, choir robes, not chic like the rest of the band) I guess what I am trying to say is that it seemed to go against everything that Adam has been trying to say all along. It doesn't matter whether you are gay, straight, black, white, old, young, tall, short, heavy or thin, we can party together and we are one. If this is too off base, please feel to delete it. I just felt the need to say it out loud. I happen to believe Adam was DEFINITELY and INTENTIONALLY making that statement with his choice of backing singers. Folks who don't recognize that, who criticize the choice, are missing the point, IMO. I think Adam is finally accepting that he is not like other pop stars and he is not going to be accepted if he tries to fit into their mold, so the hell with it, surround yourself with people of equal talent and blow the fuckin' socks off everyone with your talent and presentation. The above point can go toward my abhorrence of the dumbing down of America. Whether it applies to Adam being too talented for pop radio djs or grammar rules being changed because "everyone says it," the trend is very sad. Newspapers are written on a 5th grade level, an A in school, which used to be from 93 to 100, is now 90 to 100, and it goes on and on. I quit teaching high school after one too many parents proclaimed (whether it was believed or not) that "MY child wouldn't do that" or a principal or coach acquiesced because a parent was influential or generous. In my book, there are just some things that are non-negotiable. By the way, I excuse my profanity by not adding a "g" to fuckin', because then it is just slang. How do you spell rationalization? : : :
