Sorry to be late to the party on the discussion of the "in person" impact of Adam.
I will never forget the first time I saw him. It was in Charlotte. We had been on line since 6 AM and the buses pulled in to the rather small parking lot by the backstage entrance. Somehow he got in the venue before we were on to it but after we listened to the sound check, we gathered at the barriers and eventually he came out.
The impact was crazy! I never expected it. I was struck by several things simultaneously. The first was the level of charisma. It caught me totally off guard. It was a jolt of light filled radiance. Reminds me of when his mom gave that quote about his being pure sunshine. Another thing was the shock of the contrast between how fair his skin is and how black his hair is and how blue his eyes are. Obviously the hair is not natural but instead of the contrast being jarring, it added to the radiance in that his skin and eyes jumped out in the contrast.
His height was another surprise. I knew he was tall but how he carries his height and the power and confidence of his gait was stunning. He owned his space and yet it was not egotistical but rather a centered self awareness. I was and still am utterly fascinated.
He came out after two other shows that I attended and that was also amazing and then there were two Meet and Greets - both were insane overnight journeys on red eyes but I just had to have that up close and personal moment. The first was in a way heartbreaking. He was dead tired and it was awkward for a number of reasons but then there was the recent Alice San Fran gig on my birthday. Pi miraculously won not only the tickets for the event but was one of only five names drawn for two people to do the Meet and Greet. It was wonderful because in those moments this miraculous creature proved to be a lovable, caring, engaged and charming human who managed to make everyone feel comfortable and interesting - even when you know how many times he goes through that same ritual with all the countless faces.
My family has utterly given me up for lost. I find myself constantly having to fight back talking about Adam so as not to annoy them. Thank goodness my hubby is more than tolerant and is even given to asking me "how's the fandom today?" So sweet.
Yes, he is something else. Maybe it's like this with other stars but no one ever drew me in like this.
