I know there is an AI thread (that I don't go to because I only watch the performances on you-tube afterwards) but I wanted to address this here. Forgive me if I am speaking with limited knowledge, because I have missed so much of this season. I listened to Joshua Ledet's "Ready for Love" performance after Adam tweeted about it and was really taken by the beauty of it, vocally and emotionally. I have been reading the comments on his you-tube and AI.com performances (I know, I know) and they are riddled with hate. He is coined the new "Jacob Lusk" . Apparently because they share similar skin-tones and singing style we are to assume that Joshua is a gay boy too (gasp!). Or maybe the clips I've missed clue us in to his sexuality, I don't know. But many of these commenter are not talking about his voice. I can't help but watch his beautiful performance--noticing that his dislikes are half of the likes--and see Adam's fight. This is the new civil rights fight Adam speaks of. Perhaps he is even fighting on two fronts, one for the color of his skin highlighted by his "churchy" R&B sound, and the other for his perceived sexuality. He may not deserve to win but he deserves a fair chance. I think in season 8, American came close to beating out discrimination. But in season 11, I think the combination of fights is going to be impossible for him to overcome. All he wants is to be heard. To be judged for his music....Just like Adam. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hylvMUtFyC8Speaking for myself, I could care less if an artist is black or gay or a combination of both. My favorite musical artists come from these two categories. Having said that, I DETEST Joshua's voice. I love Beyonce's voice, hate Fantasia's! Joshua is like Fantasia, but his voice is even rougher. I keep wondering if he is hurting his voice the entire time he is singing. He sounds like someone who has vocal nodules. His voice isn't appealing to me in any way, just like Fantasia's isn't and that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the color of their skin or Joshua's sexual orientation. (BTW, Joshua says he is straight.) I imagine there are many other AI viewers who simply just don't like the rough tone and Joshua screaming for the majority of most of his songs. Those things just aren't appealing to some people.

proud2bhere.wordpress.com/2012/04/26/does-adam-lambert-make-us-embarrassed-to-be-gay-he-shouldnt/Does Adam Lambert Make Us ‘Embarrassed to be Gay’? He Shouldn’t
I opened up my mailbox yesterday to find Adam Lambert peeking out at me. He is May’s cover story for Instinct Magazine. In the interview, Lambert talks about his upcoming album, Trespassing; his relationship with boyfriend Sauli Koskinen, a Finish reality star; and a wee bit about the issue I’d hoped would be addressed most–his lack of embracement within the gay community. Adam addresses this by stating that because he came from American Idol he may just be viewed as a flavor of the moment, but I believe that he is onto something more when he says: “We’re very eager to celebrate a strong female. But to celebrate a fellow gay man–it gets catty sometimes. Adam is right. We are gaga over Gaga, mad about Madge and celebrate Cher; divas who let their freak flags fly; who own their individuality. So why is it that now that we have an out, proud gay male who fits that same mold; he is who he is, we are reluctant to embrace and own him in the same way? I believe that the answer lies in the fact that in some way Adam Lambert makes us ‘embarrassed to be gay.’
We, as a gay male community, have still not completely managed to combat the steryotypical image in part of population’s heads that all gay men are ‘screaming queens.’ We long for a strong, butch, male to whom we can point and say ‘see world that is us.’ When we look at Lambert or a Johnny Weir, we are confronted with an image that makes us unconfortable. It makes us uncomfortable because it seems to reinforce a steryotype that we as a community are trying so hard to shatter in order to gain acceptance and full equality. The reality is, though, that men like Lambert and Weir are part of our community and we shouldn’t shy away from them. When we are proud of every intelligent, successful, well-adjusted person within our community no matter what stripe of the rainbow they make up, then we reduce the shame and stigma for everyone in the community and that’s the best reason of all to embrace our own.

Those things just aren't appealing to some people. I'm with you. I can't stand Joshua's voice. When he goes for a power note, he sounds like a cement mixer. Such an unpleasant tone. He still hasn't shown anywhere near the versatility that Adam showed when he was on Idol. (Yes, I compare everyone to Adam. You gotta problem with that?) That's a great article, gelly. This quote-- "When we look at Lambert or a Johnny Weir, we are confronted with an image that makes us unconfortable. It makes us uncomfortable because it seems to reinforce a stereotype that we as a community are trying so hard to shatter in order to gain acceptance and full equality. The reality is, though, that men like Lambert and Weir are part of our community and we shouldn’t shy away from them"--makes me think of an interview I saw with Jane Espenson and Cheeks, co-writers of Husbands. They said that ten years ago, a character like Cheeks wouldn't have been written into a TV show (or in this case, a webseries) because everyone felt it was politically incorrect to show "effeminate" gay men. The gay characters had to be indistinguishable from the straight characters. But gay men like Cheeks certainly exist, and it is insulting to them to pretend that they don't. It's like saying there's something wrong with being who they are, and there isn't!
