Exactly, context, history, frame of reference. Using this particular example everything I know of Adam shows that he is a loving, supportive, nurturing being. Everything I know of Chris Brown shows him to be a misogynistic, violent and homophobic being. The way I interpret their words is through the lens of my impressions of them. The meaning of a word is influenced by the context in which it is used and so the offensiveness of a word is also influenced by the context surrounding it. Meanings change all the time.


Early on in Adam fandom there was a very interesting similar discussion revolving around Adam's use of the word Twat. When he so cleverly referred to lame tweets as twats some people took offense much in the same way that some are now offended by vajayjay. Where I grew up twat was either a descriptive term for vagina or an offensive term used in place of cunt. If you referred to the persons twat that was no big deal but if you called someone a twat that was obviously meant to be offensive. Same word could be both accepted and consider vulgar depending on the usage.

Not long after Adam used the term I there were plenty of others who used it with the same intention he did. I don't know if he in fact originated it or if he heard it from someone else but I've often come across tweets being called twats since then and never ran in to any more opposition to it.
