I've already said that I didn't believe Adam would be dropped, for all the reasons you list. However, as you agree, US sales are comparable, with Adam ahead in ways that don't make a difference. Neither man will go gold with anything they have released in the US. What succeeds in the US is likely to succeed elsewhere; lack of sales here hurt performance elsewhere. I'm using "sales" like a mantra, because Adam wants to succeed in pop, and you must have sales for pop. If Trespassing does not succeed, Adam could consider other genres, other media. All of those opportunities are closed to Cook, which is one reason why they can't be compared in anything but SALES, IN THE US. Record companies could care less where the money comes from, just so it comes from somewhere! It wouldn't matter if Adam's numbers were lower than Cook's in the US (which they are not) because AL is still selling records, selling tickets and has interest from outside of the US. Why do people think that the money from the US is more valuable? Do they think other countries pay for music with rocks? It's all the same. Adam doesn't have to choose other genres or other media, he can continue to make the types of music that he wants to make because there is POTENTIAL there! Adam is current and relevant to the Pop world. There is interests from the media and casual fans from around the world, and that means potential. What is the obsession with going gold? Out of the thousands of albums released since Oct. 1 of last year in Pop, Hip-Hop, Urban, R&B, Country, Jazz, Easy Listening, Soundtracks for TV Shows or Movies, etc., only 24 of them have managed to go gold. That 24 includes: 3 Christmas CDs, 4 country albums, 2 in Rock, 1 soundtrack, 1 album from Susan Boyle and 1 duet album from Lionel Richie. There are 13 albums, out of the 24, that have the possibility of sending music to the same radio stations that Adam is sending music to. (I included Nickleback and Carrie Underwood in the 13) All the pop music is not coming from these 13 artists. There are tons of Pop artists who are sending music to the radio, doing radio shows, touring, and are slotted to make more Pop albums who have not sold gold and will not come close to selling gold. At some point, we should stop comparing Idols! It's good to get out of the bubble and look at the charts and what the industry is looking at as far as diminishing album sales. Look at the rosters of major record labels. There are hundreds of artists listed that I've never even heard of. Talent, Potential, Relevancy, General Interest, and Attention brought to a label through an artist - ALL of these things matter in the real world!

Wow, only 24 albums went Gold last year? I haven't been following this stuff recently, so this number is absolutely shocking to me. How many platinum albums were there? I knew album sales were lousy, but this is terrible. I guess the emphasis is all on single sales now? Or are the people with all the big single sales also the ones selling albums?

Since October 1, 2011- Eight! (Nine have sold 1 million counting Adele) The eight are: Michael Buble (Xmas), Drake, Coldplay, Justin Bieber (Xmas), One Direction, Scotty McCreery, Lionel Richie Duets and Rihanna. Coming up on Platinum are The Black Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Nickelback and Justin Bieber. Carrie Underwood is around 250K away from Platinum, but she will get there by Christmas. Next is Florence and the Machine, Gotye, Nicki Minaj, Young Jeezy, Mary J. Blige, Miranda Lambert, Toby Keith, Fun, Twilight Soundtrack, Maroon 5 and Andrea Bocelli.

tigerlily - thank you for the stats and the perspective! For someone like me, who knows nothing of the pop culture and uses this site as the main source of info - posts like these are invaluable

Puts it all into perspective. Money is to be made in touring. But to get more exposure you still need radio.

Clarkson and Underwood are still treated as idols. Adam will be an idol for a long time to come, and he will be compared with other idols by the media, whether we like it or not. Of course there are pop acts on major labels who don't sell gold, and send music to radio without getting hits. If Adam had started off as one of them, all would be well. He didn't start off as one of them, however, and experienced a huge fall off between eras instead both here and abroad. Adam told Levine, a couple of years ago, that he will "know" of him (or some such wording) after the second album. It happened after Levine said on Voice that he didn't know who sang WWFM. That tells you a lot about Adam's ambition for this album. You may feel that Adam's doing well, but I don't know if Adam will be satisfied being a working musician who remains on a label selling little, getting no hits, and touring. If Trespassing does not chart on radio, I think he will consider widening his options. He's ambitious, and he's not his own fan. He can tell when there is a problem, and there IS a problem.

Your welcome to your opinions, but they are only your opinions IMHO Adam is an international star now and will be iconic in the future. I tend to form a gestalt of his success . As a whole I think in a short amount of time that Adam has done remarkably well ,has achieved world fame ,has put out some really outstanding music.Has a big admiring fan base, Had a couple of hit singles ,WWFM nominated for a grammy ,Trespassing ,his second album #1 on the 200 billboard,& had a mini tour with Queen.Adam has achieved some unimaginable success, especially for a gay artist in America. In Fact he has broken that glass ceiling(Trespassing) IMO not bad for under 4 years . To add: success doesn't usually go in a straight line to the top,it has its ups and downs.

Nor do I know what Adam is thinking at this point ;D However, I like civil discussion and I'm enjoying this one. The only statement in my previous post that is objective is that "there is a problem" with the second era. There is--indicative verb.
