OMG.. Kesha again? I HATE THE SOUND OF HER WINING VOICE!!! I just hope there will be minimum talk about her here, even her name makes me shudder... re Adam - at the moment I am really on the "dark side", not even sure why... may be too many "secrets" and no visible cohesive promo strategy ... Yesterday on the SYTYCD they had this little girl with her little girl voice with zero energy ... WHY? it was a low point for the whole show... I really, really do not understand anything about the music business...It's probably because you only listen to classical music, that's an entirely different world from pop music. That little girl is 26 (lol) and had a number one hit for 8 weeks this summer. (she can't help that she is little and looks young) CRJ had the "song of the summer". She isn't going to be a one hit wonder, either, as she has a duet in the Top 10 already. I'm certain that her solo follow up will do well and her duet with Bieber will also top the charts. Why? Carly's songs are catchy with fun lyrics and great hooks and yes, she writes them. She is cute and is popular in the high school and college age groups. It's pop music, that's all you need! nationalglampoon: I like her, too! She's fun, intelligent and different in her own way.

LOL, tigerlily... she may be 26 but she came across infantile ...whateverz... I am trying very hard to avoid pop singers but yesterday was a total ambush as far as I am concerned... and since I've heard of her (probably here) I decided to watch/listen... my own fault...duet with Biebs? well - that must be a cultural event of the century! ;D #itisallAdamsfault

That's what I do with the judges comments on AI! ;D Surprisingly, the duet is rather pleasant, innocent and sweet. I wouldn't mind hearing it on the radio. I predict the young girls will eat it up with a spoon. lol Remember, it's Pop music- which doesn't proclaim to be a cultural event.

ETA: Maybe I'll ask Q3 for my own (preferably padded) thread called Junkets long-ass insomnia-induced pop culture blathering ETA2: Lol about Kanye's new album. I've been tempted to listen to his stuff because it's supposed to be so brilliant, but I can never get part that hysterically gargantuan ego! I had fun reading the writeup tho! Ok, I feel like I'm posting Gawker stuff too much lately, but I found this article from one of Gawker's better writers about all the big releases this week to be very interesting re. current pop music scene. Rich Juzwiak is an unabashed lover of pop music, and he sang the praises of Trespassing, which as I said in a post earlier this year, is totally un-Gawker-like. I don't read a lot of music reviews, because it's like reading art critics--it's all subjective. But this guy I feel is fair-minded and not a cooler-than-thou hipster/poseur. Anyway, I found a couple things interesting. One is that he writes about Pink trying to express her sluttiness as unconvincing. This is literally the moment I've become either a prude or just dusted off my National Organization for Women membership card because Pink should NOT be slutty, ever, and should not feel she has to be. It is NOT empowering to be slutty--nor is the word empowering, although I'm sure men are loving the idea. I think he has a fair assessment of Carly Rae Jepsen. I harbor no ill will toward her at all. I was just mocking the way that someone is proven to be "authentic" (viral YouTube a la Bieber via *cough* Usher and now Jepsen via *cough* Bieber). The coughs are indicating that they really didn't come out of nowhere. "Inauthentic" refers to contestants from singing competitions. But it's all become blurred, hasn't it? Jepsen is from Canadian AI, but she was never marketed like that. She DOES seem younger than her 26 years--she's kind of got that gamine, quirky Zooey Deschanel quality about her. So I don't think it matters. Katy Perry and Gaga are same age, but Gags seems to be more mature and worldly and both KP and CRJ have that wide-eyed girl-next-door persona. I'm not at all scandalized by Gags "take control of her sexuality"--she never appears like she has to be reduced to merely being slutty. Not only did Madonna do that over 20 years earlier, but Marianne Faithful was doing it on Broken English several years before that. It's like I used to say in college, I could walk into a room and take any guy I wanted home with me. Yeah, real conquest considering how easy guys are, lol--that's hardly a conquest. But find a guy who's willing to pursue you even if you're not convinced at first--that's power Then we come to the David Guetta release--particularly the one featuring Nicki Minaj. Now THIS is really where I've decided if I'm a prude, I'm glad to be one. I grew up with all kinds of boundary breaking artists, from punk to rap, and I loved all the angry, anachistic stuff from Public Enemy and NWA. I even appreciated Eminem's stuff as him putting on a character even when he wrote about murdering his wife because I felt he had about the best wordplay I'd heard since Dylan. But Nicki Minaj's lyrics are stomach-churning. I think the song is titled "Where My Girls At" (can't check cuz posting from phone again). It's not racist, or sexist. And it's not empowering or sexy. It's just really low-class. I won't repeat them here, but I'll post Gawker review link because it does serve as a kind Cliffs Notes for those of us who need a little more brushing up on current pop. gawker.com/5944682/the-second-coming-a-proud-slut-and-youtube-stars-this-weeks-new-music-summarizes-the-whole-year

You have to listen to the entire song as a production, and give up any expectation that the singer can work it simple and live. I also love classical music. I truly believe that if you brought Mozart back to life, he would be less shocked at Kesha and Perry than he would be at Glass, Webern or Schoenberg. Many older composers would have found modern instrumentation and studios fascinating. They also would have understood the need to appeal to an audience, deal with a label, and to be creative within a strictly limited genre, as that was how they survived. Bach would have (possibly) tranced out in a modern studio, if he didn't die of a heart attack first. I can see a competent modern producer having a great discussion with a dead yet conveniently alive composer.

I think the capabilities of electronic sound production are amazing, and a great composer would have a blast playing with all the new sounds! (I found the whole synth/electronic music thru Adam and I LOVE it!) I can't even imagine what Bach would've been able to create in a proper 21st century studio! I also agree that the modern classical music, full of dissonance in every way (harmonically, rhythmically), with innovative instruments is often hard to digest. And yet - it is music , it is new, it is progress. (unlike the endless rehash of the same chords accompanied by half talking half whining of idiotic lyrics...however the honest inclusion of $ sign is one's name must be applauded ;D)

Agree with everything you said except for modern classical music ;D I hate it with a passion, wouldn't describe it as music, but that's subjective. To add to this ot post, Telemann, Bach, could soar with Baroque music, but in the hands of indifferent composers, the style can fall flat, the way pop usually does. I still enjoy both, though. I enjoy Adam as well :DDD He's a vocal genius.

I happen to go to every Gidon Kremer's performance in NYC and he just loves playing Gubaidulina and Schnittke...so every time I have to "suffer" through the "modern" sounds made on his Stradivarius or Gaurneri...but on the bright side - I slowly learned to appreciate some of it... as far as Adam is concerned - he can make any sound and I'll love it...can't explain it...
