Adam Lambert Caught ‘Trespassing’ Atop Album Chart

Adam Lambert‘s Trespassing has sailed to the #1 position on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week, marking the American Idol alum’s first chart-topping LP. (Previous offering For Your Entertainment peaked at #3 in 2009.) This gives the “Never Close Our Eyes” crooner the distinction of being the first openly-gay singer to top the main album chart in the US, according to the Village Voice‘s math, with a single-artist title. Another interesting tidbit: this marks the first time one Idol alum has succeeded another — in this case, Carrie Underwood — in the Top 200′s upper-most position.

This one gives me teary eyes.

Album Sales: Adam Lambert tops the Billboard charts, beating out Adele and Carrie Underwood

An American Idol runner-up replaced an Idol winner atop the Billboard 200 this week, as Adam Lambert dethroned Carrie Underwood with his sophomore album Trespassing, which sold 77,000 copies in its first week.

With his No. 1 debut and 77,000 copies sold, many are touting that this makes Lambert the first openly gay artist to ever top the albums chart (another gay Idol contestant, Clay Aiken, topped the Billboard 200 with Measure of a Man, which debuted with 613,000 copies sold in 2003, but he didn’t come out until 2008). Still, it’s a landmark achievement.

Other Top 10 debuts included Tenacious D’s The Rise of Fenix and Beach House’s Bloom, but despite the newcomers, overall sales were relatively soft. Check out the full Top 10 below:
1. Adam Lambert, Trespassing – 77,000

Adam Lambert’s passionate “Glamily” helped propel his second LP into first place with sales of 77,000 — a strong result for an album that has yet to spawn a significant hit (“Better Than I Know Myself” sputtered on the chart, and followup “Never Close Our Eyes” is slowly climbing).

While Lambert’s No. 1 album is a major achievement, his debut, For Your Entertainment, sold over twice as many copies (198,000) in its first week in November 2009. As Billboard notes, Trespassing‘s start is the “smallest sum at No. 1 on the chart since the tally dated Aug. 20, 2011, when Adele‘s “21″ sold 76,000 in its 12th nonconsecutive week atop the list.”

Adam Lambert's "Trespassing" Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart





Lambert's fans, collaborators, and fellow artists, more commonly referred to as his Glamily, are buzzing over the news of his first #1 debut on Billboard, and Twitter has been cuckoo with comments to, for, and about Adam since the news broke. The singer himself has even tweeted about it- "WOW. Trespassing made it's debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 this week. Thank you to the Glamily for helping me make HISTORY."

By history, Adam is referring to the fact that he is the first openly gay artist to reach The Top of the charts. Other artists like Elton John and George Michael have reached The Top spot, but not before coming out, and neither have since earned that distinction. It's a cultural milestone that is being celebrated worldwide today.

Sam Sparro, who worked with Adam on two tracks from Trespassing, tweeted "So proud of my homeslice @adamlambert on his #1 album on Billboard. MAJAAAAHHH. Congratulations!"

Another collaborator on the album, Pharrell Williams had this to tweet, "Congrats to @adamlambert! Great Work!" Adam returned the compliment saying, "Thanks man. Couldn't have done this without you." Upon receiving Adam's tweet, Pharrell replied "Don't let anyone tell you where you can go!" and hash-tagged it with #notresspassing.





His faithful and ever-loving Glamberts are not short on praise and appreciation either. They're the ones that put him here, after all, and it's a very validating day for them. It speaks volumes about a fan base that shows enough support to put a sophomore album at The Top of the charts this quickly, despite very little airplay. It also speaks volumes about Adam Lambert's undeniable talent and appeal. Without it, his fierce Glam Nation would never have ignited into such a powerful force to begin with.
