Adam didn't need to go for opening his first round---he had incredible buzz coming off AI, a RS cover, and closed the AMA's. These types of things are not happening at 3 yrs. post Idol. He also doesn't have a big hit that everyone is singing along to on the radio. His team needs to make adjustments.
And, personally, I just don't think a big tour, on the scale of GNT, is a sure thing. And, I don't necessarily think it would be in his best interest to spend a lot of time and money doing this. But, we will see what transpires in 2013.

1) He was straight off of Idol. Adam is adjusting his expectations, fans should probably do the same. It puts too much pressure on Adam and his fanbase to expect him to sell a million albums, get multiple Grammys, do an arena tour, etc. 2) Yes, he has. The discussion was about his upcoming tour- whenever that is. Six months or a year from now. 3) Not if radio play for any single doesn't kick in or album sales don't suddenly explode. Adam isn't an alt. rock or jazz artist, he's a pop artist. The chances are very slim that Adam will get Grammy nominations without a hit song or better, much better, album sales. Once again, realistic expectations! 4) IDK what Queen is going to do in the grand scheme of promoting Adam's current new music. So far, not so much, but we can hope there is some great effect in the UK after the Queen concerts. It's not really Adam doing HIS music, but we will see... 5) No one said there was anything wrong with mid-size venues. I certainly didn't!
Again, my comment was that opening for some big tour could get Adam some different kind of exposure, especially outside of the US! (think stadiums in other countries!)

Some stats from the Glam Nation Tour (these include the 74 U.S. dates that were advertised as official GNT dates, radio shows and festivals are excluded):
74 total US dates Average venue capacity 2481 Largest venue: Western Washington Fair - 10368 Smallest venue: Sunshine Theater (Albuquerque) & Omni (Toledo) - 1000
Verified totals (from 42 concert boxscores): 101254 sold / 102649 capacity (98.6%) Verified average attendance / capacity (42 dates): 2411 / 2444 Verified gross (42 dates): $3,750,508 ($89,298 average per date)
Estimated totals (from all 74 dates): 177151 sold / 183614 capacity (95.5%) Estimated average attendance / capacity (74 dates): 2394 / 2481
bullsfan, I agree that a large scale tour such as GNT (74 official US dates, 7 additional festivals/radio concerts/other appearances, 32 international dates) is no given at this point. IMO, depends on if a radio hit happens this year, album/track sales, possible nominations, how these one-off concerts this summer end up selling.

Comparing the first five weeks of album sales, FYE vs. Trespassing (yes, different times of year and coming off Idol vs 3 years later, but I think it's still worth looking at the numbers):
FYE sales numbers (from old AO thread): Week 1: 11/29 - FYE #3 Overall 198,903 Sales Week 2: 12/6 - FYE 50,648 Sales (-75%) Week 3: 12/13 - FYE 45,825 Sales (-10%) Week 4: 12/20 - FYE 62,623 Approx. Sales (+36%) Week 5: 12/27 - FYE 62,000 Sales (-1%) Total sales through Week 5: 420,000
Trespassing sales numbers (from Idol Chatter): Week 1: 5/20 - TSP #1 Overall 77,000 Sales Week 2: 5/27 - TSP 22,000 Sales (-71%) Week 3: 6/3 - TSP 12,000 Sales (-47%) Week 4: 6/10 - TSP 8,000 Sales (-30%) Week 5: 6/17 - TSP 7,000 Sales (-4%) Total sales through Week 5: 127,000 (30% of FYE sales through week 5)
According to Wikipedia, FYE had sold 838,000 in the US as of May 2012, so through Week 5 it had logged 50.1% of its total sales to date. Applying the same math to TSP would result in an eventual total of around 253,000.
Further numbers, looking at the second album sales as a percentage of first album sales for the top 15 album selling Idols (all data from Wikipedia - Christmas albums are excluded where noted):
Underwood 45.3% 1st album 7.21 million 2nd album 3.266 million

Aiken (Christmas album excluded) 19.1% 1st album 2.785 million 2nd album 531,000
Barrino 29.1% 1st album 1.821 million 2nd album 530,000

Without the numbers, this superb album will not receive the attention it deserves or the awards and Grammy nominations I feel it/he deserves. *sigh*

Agreed with all above. Except I can NOT see Adam opening for anyone in the U.S., I mean anyone, co-headling maybe. Image and perception is everything in the show biz. General public have little to no interest or knowledge in numbers, but one headline of "Glambert going from a headliner, Queen's frontman to an opener act" would, otherwise, definitely get them alert. Its implication is opposite of everything that RCA has been working to build him up to. However, internationally, I CAN see him open for someone hugely popular in that region where he's relatively unknown.
If domestic sales stay low, I see a small to mid-size venue tour in the US, NO WAY would he open for someone plus who in their right minds would have ADAM FUCKING LAMBERT open for them??? I mean, how do you go on after his performance????? Also, Adam would not make money if he was the opening act. Being the businessman he is, I totally see him settle on a smaller tour if it comes to the worst...just my 2 cents.

AGREE ! but also please remember that he is performing at THE largest EU sports event as one of only two acts. I can't see how one can get any more exposure.... ....still hoping for the Olympics.... the funny thing is that we went thru the same exact discussions the first era... except there was no Queen or Elton John in the mixture...

Great exposure indeed! But he is singing Queen's music not his own, hopefully, some will check him out afterwards and like his music as well. As for the Olympics, darling! unless the Queen of England made him a honorary citizen before the ceremony, I'm afraid it's not gonna happen! I would love it, don't get me wrong, but just don't see it in the cards. I was not on board the first era, you mean ya'all had the same gloomy discussion about Adam's first tour which turned out to be the successful GNT?

With very few exceptions, it has been shown time and time again (using record sales) that being an opener does not expand the artists' fanbase by much (if any!) I have never, and I mean never, bought an album or gone to see an artist because they were an opener for someone I liked. I've been to 4 concerts till now and it happened to me twice. The last time it was the great danish band Dune. I've brought their albums and a few years later, when they played a little club in my town, I went to see them again (my forth concert). I still love their music long after I'm over the band they opened for. I think it is good, that the tour will be next year. Till then many things can happen and maybe he can play bigger venues than he would if the the tour would be this year. I have nothing against small and middle sized venues tho. They are way more intimate. ;D
