Alison just invited me to the moon garden to read the discussion about the voice you have been having. Thank you, Alison. I found myself repeatedly nodding my head at the writings on this page about the need of musicians to critically (as in with specificity and detail, not as in being negative/critical) listen and analyze what the are hearing. And about feeling that such comments are attacked with vigor on the daily thread. I no longer post vocal comments (other than "WOW") there because of the flack I and others have gotten.
As holst said, just because someone doesn't hear a pitch or production problem, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. When I watch SYTYCD, not being a dancer, I may think that a piece is exquisite, only to hear the expert judges point out problems with a full extension here, a too-soft back there, a lack of pointed toe in another passage. "Really? It all looked good to me." But, I LIKE to hear what the experts say, as it helps me to understand dance in a deeper way, and appreciate it more.
I think that people with a certain level of expertise, no matter the field, will always look at others with that critical eye. For example, former football players may think Bret Favre is the best quarterback of all time. But, they can also tell you about his faults, the kinds of plays he struggles with , the bad decisions he made on the field, the ways he has changed and grown over the seasons. They marvel at his mastery of the position, but still note that he is not perfect.
As a teacher, when I go to a training session or a workshop, I look at the presenter for techniques and methods, innovation that I can "steal" and incorporate. I also can't help but notice if they are ineffective speakers without clear points and goals, without an engaging style, without incorporating what we know about learning styles and modalities. I am sure each of you has an area of expertise where you do the same thing, right?
But, the culture of the daily thread is as it is. When I want an in-depth discussion about the voice and Adam's amazing mastery of all things performance, I jump over to the masterclass thread, or schedule a Skype session with Angelina. Maybe I should do the same with the music folks on Adamtopia. Right now I am preparing a playlist for a couple of serious musician/singers I will see when I visit my hometown. Finding examples of Adam's artistry and awesome abilities. I"ve been down the rabbit hole for days now, finding examples of not only his range, but his versatility, his techniques, his incredible control of his voice, how he turns a phrase, how he attacks a word. Knowing what these musicians will notice about Adam's performances, I am having a great time finding the best examples of them. I know that if I pick the right songs, within one song or two, they will have looked past the image, the challenge of performing with icons, the costumes, and the beauty and, on their own, without any clues from me, independently recognize that Adam is a classically trained singer with amazing abilities, techniques, and artistry. When you know what to look for, it is glaringly there.
Wouldn't others want to know about that? :dunno: Nope, I guess not. It would be labeled "nit-picking", boring, or detracting from the experience of listening to/watching Adam in all his glory. Oh, well.
Thanks for letting me blow off a little steam here, and for recognizing that we all love Adam in our own ways. Ways that can be equally appreciated, or scrolled past.

I feel optimistic and revitalized .. Adam's Fault for sure.. I feel that he is super focused right now,so
I'm voting for radio plays like mad. It can't hurt it can only help. My daughter telling me that she
loves NCOE and keeps hearing it on Sirius really got me going. I also like all the press Adam is
getting.. all very positive.

melliemom, why do you cry? You guys are so right. When those of you who know about music and singing talk about Adam, it is actually a compliment, an acknowledgment that he is a master craftsman. Some of the other singers I love -- guys like Willie Nelson or Bruce Springsteen -- well, there wouldn't be a "Vocal Masterclass" thread on their fan sites, would there? For Springsteen, there would be a lyrics thread ... for Nelson, a collaborations/musicians thread ... whatever ... I decided today that I am going to try an experiment for the next week and not visit the main thread. I don't know if I can resist, but I'm going to try. I'm also going to try not visiting ALFC and not reading AQD and not looking on Twitter. Call it an Adam cleanse before Thackerville. The reason is that when GNT first started, there were no dates in the South, and I thought Adam was not planning to come to this part of the country. I basically thought I might never have the chance to see him. So I watched a lot of the early videos from Wilkes Barre, Mystic Lake, etc. Less than two weeks into the tour, southern dates were announced and I got tix! I immediately quit watching videos and reading recaps, even though it was six or seven weeks until my show. I just marked good ones that I heard about to watch later. BUT, I found when I actually got to my show that I had somehow formulated a mental checklist. The videos were burned into my mind, and since I had kept up with the news, I knew about the stair sex in Milwaukee and kissing Tommy and other epic things Adam did from gifs and pictures. I knew about how he swung his cane during Strut and even about what faces he made at various points in different songs. I knew the exact order of the set list. As a result, there were not many surprises at my show. And if I couldn't see (which I couldn't most of the time since it was GA), or he didn't do something, I felt ... well, kind of disappointed. The human urge to compare and contrast won out in spite of myself. Even today, almost two years later, I still feel a little stung because Adam had indicated that he sang WLL when the audience was sexy ... and at my show he sang a version of Mad World so rushed you'd think the Oklahoma state police were kicking in the back door of the theater and Adam was about to make a run for it. We weren't sexy enough to "rate" ... ;D Anyway, sorry to be so long-winded. The upshot is that I expect that Thackerville will be *very* similar to the upcoming California shows. And I'm going to try to go in with fewer expectations so I can experience it in the moment. Remember "back in the day" when you just went to your concert like a virgin to the marriage bed? LOL. I'm still going to check in with the Moon Garden though! And otherwise hopefully content myself with pawing through Queen videos and pictures. We'll see how it goes ... Jesus take the wheel ... or the keyboard as the case may be ... I wanted to share this beautiful mental health break. The slow motion of the giant waves and imagining what it must be like to be gliding along in the middle of one is mesmerizing and refreshing. Love the music too. Blow it up to fill your screen and retreat.

I took dancing for 12 years when I was young, and this type of interpretation of , I believe Swan Lake ,just made me cry with indignation. Now I laugh, never did like the ballet

It is so good to see some added friendly faces here in the Moon garden. I am so glad this place is here....The news thread is slowly becoming a mere shadow of what it used to be and that is sad. Many of the major posters of the original PF and Adamtopia, until the last few months, have disappeared from the news thread and some from the whole site....that is so sad. I know I spend less and less time there...this is my go to place, even if I have not posted a lot. We used to have all sorts of discussions on anything and everything Adam related and now it is all vids and voting....often while being insulted and passive-aggresively bullied. When there was little going on we would play silly picture games or get all sociological and philosophical...now that talk is banned to first, a DARK thread and now here [thank goodness for here]. It makes me afraid for what will happen to this site...all the things that made it so different and delightful are disappearing.
Oh well...I guess everything changes...it is human nature. Usually, something else pops up to fill a void...nature abhors a vacuum...just seems so nonsensical. Let us just try to keep this thread open and functioning as long as possible.
Got to go watch the live stream...I hear some noise...yeah

What is weighing heaviest on my mind is way off topic (Colorado). Words cannot express. I'm doing OK with my Adam news blackout. Just fine. Not suffering any curiosity or pangs at all. Coincidentally, this morning I ran across this interesting article on a closely related topic -- the inability to be PRESENT in your own reality: Vacation Sabotage: travel.nytimes.com/2012/07/01/travel/vacation-sabotage-dont-let-it-happen-to-you.html?pagewanted=allExcerpt: Phones and computers fundamentally encourage, even demand, a constant cycle of stimulation and response. Click or swipe, and something happens. And responding to a ping, researchers say, delivers a “dopamine squirt” — a little burst of adrenaline. The brain gets used to this stimulation and then craves it in its absence. ... But this commentary from Louis CK is so funny and says it even better than the article. What do you think? Since Adam came into your life, have you ever chilled out from Adam news for any length of time?

The Louis CK video is hilarious and sad at the same time. I'm tethered to my device--it's a problem . I have taken a break from Adam News before and I really didn't miss it that much. I missed the conversations (but I was avoiding the news threads at the time because the milieu was offputting). Instead I spent time in the masterclass thread, diet thread, and the music recommendation thread (hi sugaree, Jamie, & Mika). I did feel more connected with my RL world. Like Mszue, I hope the Moon Garden lasts--it represents everything I love about Atop.
