(deep breath) OK. I swore -- swore -- I wasn't going to write anything about the hair. Because who freaking cares, right? But since the main thread is on the Fourth Full Day of the Great Blonde Hair Imbroglio, I guess there are a lot of people who freaking care. So since this is the Moon Garden, I decided to ask why, instead of raging against it. I took Google and some of my favorite sources on non-verbal communication for a spin and it actually turned out to be pretty interesting, because it seems that we are hard-wired by nature to be deeply interested in other people's hair. Hard-wired where? In the cingulate gyrus, the "new" wing of the brain that sets mammals apart from earlier ancestors. The cingulate gyrus is the brain's emotional control center. It does a lot of things, but it's basically in charge of caring: that includes nuzzling, cuddling, and grooming, and making conclusions about what one finds when doing so. One of these lemurs looks better, doesn't it? In an nutshell, we can't help it: the cingulate gyrus looks at hair and makes conclusions about people's state of well-being, desirability, and motivations. We may have nice feelings about what we see, or icky feelings, but we're going to feel something whether we like it or not. Conclusion: As mika and I joked about yesterday, most of us look the same everyday; in my case for decades. LOL. Adam is using his hair as art: he takes the time to craft it, knowing it will elicit an emotional response from those who experience it. Finally, wish I'd thought of this: David Lynch's Hair as Art: htmlgiant.com/craft-notes/the-painter/

awww, sugaree, I'm sorry your post went poof because we lost the long version, but I'm particularly sorry because I know the effort that goes into typing the damn thing for you. How infuriating. I'm glad you're such a tough cookie and just suck it up and start over with the typing. And it definitely sounds, from your posts in the member news thread, like the efforts are paying off. mika, I think I know what you're talking about in yesterday's thread as i was feeling increasingly twitchy myself... ...sometimes there's an element to the joy this fandom takes in Adam's particular form of physicality that makes me a little uncomfortable--it tends to coincide with the words "alpha" (? whatever people think that means) and "manly" (?? whatever people think that means) and "toppy" (??? um, yeah, whatever people think that means) getting flung around with a degree of pride (i think that's the right word) that weirds me out not a little. And in my head I tend to wrap that up together with discussions of Adam's make-up and sartorial choices in ways that are probably, as often as not, a little unfair. There's a whole lot of fuzzy territory, I'm sure, between simple taste preferences and those "unsavory underpinnings" (to borrow your phrase) that our shared conventional and fearful culture has probably embedded beneath all our seemingly autonomous tastes. I don't know how closely I want to examine my own. I mean, to be honest, my husband is 6'3'' with broad shoulders and chest and long limbs--it's not random that I find Adam more physically attractive than Sauli. [On the other hand, he (my husband) also sticks his fingers in his ears during the (supposedly) scary parts in PG-13 movies. ;D] I suppose the question is whether we treat these preferences as subjective or give them instead some sort of objective qualitative value. So yeah, the smugness can grate. Personally, I thought Adam looked very lovely in his BTIKM-promo phase (by NCOE he'd really gone back to a pretty glam look, and btw, I LOVED his NCOE looks). And Adam sure seemed genuine in his styling. (Not sure how one can be un-genuine in one's styling, as long as it's voluntary.) I always took it as a temporary thing because Adam has made it very clear that he matches his approach to the song--becardiganed, cozy Adam suited BTIKM, especially during sleepy, early-morning radio acoustic sessions. NCOE enters the morning from the other (drunker) end. But I have to admit, I couldn't help associating the "toned-down" look with the (supposedly--what do we know) "safe choice" of BTIKM as the opening single, and resenting it slightly on that account. It's no secret, I'm sure, that I have a considerable weakness for absurd-Adam. I want an absurd single ( ;D) and absurd outfits, and for me the appearance of the Dragon Attack jacket felt like celebratory fireworks. I can't wait to see what Cuckoo brings (yeah yeah, I know, but those blasted chickens can freaking hatch already now). I am loving the silver hair. Black may be sexier, but the silver is such fun. It's like glitter, but softer. Like an external expression of his glittery insides. Can't wait to see it reflecting the stage lights over a serious eye-makeup situation, with a wicked jacket. But, in its softness, I can see it suiting, say, a cozy green cardy as well. Certainly, both looks are genuine Adam. I find Adam's description of the FYE era as being more "presentational" to be a much more useful distinction than organic/non-organic or genuine/dress-up. The direction of his apparent focus--inwards or outwards, is interesting to track. Juniemoon--as to your question about the new orthodoxy--the sense that people are jamming the breaks and hitting reverse to jump on a new train (lol terrible mixed metaphor is TERRIBLE!)--I think the effect is starkly exaggerated by the fact that there are a large number of people who regularly use this forum, and whenever something new happens, the subset of people who are happiest about that new thing, understandably, will jump online to celebrate it. If it seems like it was a very different something that was being celebrated just a few months ago, that's partly because it was a very different subset doing the celebrating. And then, lol, there are just those people who love everything no matter what--they may be the biggest subset of all. ;D

So since this is the Moon Garden, I decided to ask why, instead of raging against it. ;D Oh Junie, of course people care about the hair! My college commencement address was given by Hillary Clinton. Her opening line? The one piece of hard-won wisdom she felt she needed to impart to graduating seniors? "Make no mistake, HAIR MATTERS. : " [<----- the eye-roll was hers] Poor woman, she had to deal with a lot of shit regarding her hairstyles when she was first lady. But listen, I totally get the hair fascination, just as I get the jacket fascination and the make-up fascination and the boots fascination. We're following a pop-star, for heaven's sake. The hair's half the fun! I'm just glad he gives us so much material to fuss about! And as far as I can tell, most peeps, like the hair or not, are just enjoying the fuss for all it's worth. (in other news, oh my god I talk too much! *goes back to lurking* *not fooling anyone*)

I wish my mom had gotten to see Adam. I think she would have loved him.

To me, changing up a look is a fun visual expression, though it hasn't always been that way, lol. Marrying an artist, and then having children that share his DNA gradually made me love to see what they would dream up next in their exploration of hair as art. My husband changes his hair and style to fit the tone of whatever movie he is designing. We can tell when he made various films by looking at his pictures from those time periods: western, rock and roll, Hawaiian, hippy, New Yorker, beach bro... He dresses himself like he dresses the sets he designs, somewhat tongue in cheek, and has fun doing so. My kids did all manner of wild things to their hair growing up. My daughter, a natural platinum blonde like me, has had black hair, brown hair, red hair, purple hair, white hair and a mixture of some of the above at various times in her life. She began playing out her design ideas in her hair as a senior and has used her hair as an ever changing canvas since then. My son cuts and styles his own hair, often coloring it himself as well. He gave himself a mohawk when he was in fourth grade, so that should have been a sign of what was to come, lol. He used to have a different length and color every couple of weeks but now, at 27, has had to settle for a more traditional style in order to keep the hair he still has safely in place on his head. By the way, he finally signed his first record deal today, and it has been really interesting getting a peak behind the scenes at that whole process! It is fun and liberating and creative to change things up. I love people who take creative risks. I guess that's why I ended up marrying one of them, raising a family of more of them and looking forward to all the surprises Adam has in store ahead. Adam never bores me--one of the many things that keeps me hanging around waiting for what he will bring new,now and next.

Hair DOES matter but also (imo) Lemurs always look good - fuzzy or smooth! I find Adam's description of the FYE era as being more "presentational" to be a much more useful distinction than organic/non-organic or genuine/dress-up. The direction of his apparent focus--inwards or outwards, is interesting to track. MWP: I like that. You, as always, articulate a complex idea very well - 'organic' in this context seems to convey the weight of the dreaded authentic vs inauthentic debates. And yes Adam has us hooked on his wonderful, improbable narrative; when too much time passes between chapters we start pressing the (internet) bar like lab rats trying to get our treat! MellieM - It certainly does appear Adam is working hard and successfully to not connect his balance or esteem to the vagaries of public response - whether it's general media, radio, or fans. I think that's very smart. It's like they tell you about the stock market - invest wisely for the longterm then don't respond to every twitch of a market that's beyond your control. What's going on for him now is wonderful and he seems to be taking time to enjoy it. This seems to have allowed him to get to a secure, happy place. (Being young, freakishly talented, beautiful, in love, making a healthy living doing what he loves and living in a gorgeous house in the Hollywood Hills --- he's forgotten he should be worrying more like any sensible person ) ) ETA: Lynne, what fantastic news on your son's record deal - Congrats!!! Ai Weiwei is great and is a very high profile figure for attention from NGOs and the USG in terms of advocacy. P*ssy Riot is a harder sell (it's a hard name to say on the news for example) but they are bold young women. It was nice of Madonna to try to draw attention to their plight though it got the Russian govt so riled I don't know if it made things worse or not - www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2012/08/10/pussy_riot_trial_closing_statement_certainly_makes_one.htmlLuckily I lost my train of thought :D -- I'll just say this - I think Adam's silver ombre hair makes him look like a Selkie changeling!! (This is a pic of me, so I may be biased....)

I've been busy with RL, and yall say we are on day 4 of Adam's new do? Guess there is not much else to talk about. Can't wait for the Japan concerts, and to see what Adam will wear, and sing, and how he will move, and if any roses will pop up among other things.
As previously professed, I am on team #AdamcandowhateverthefuckhewantsandIwillloveit! I love Adam's hair in all forms, well, in most of them anyway. The comments here make me kind of skerd to peek in over there. A sentiment I have heard expressed by more than 2 peeps via pms ( that's pm s, as in personal messages, not Pre Menstral Syndrome). On the other hand, perhaps PMS is to blame for some of the attitudes over there, or maybe it's something in the way the stars are lining up. Today was a particularly bad day for a particular Scorpio that I live with, it would be interesting to see if it has something to do with the horoscope for the day. Mika, are you a Scorpio? It might explain your bad day also. I have gotten really cryptic now, will be going off the deep end pretty soon.
Junie, I am facinated with the info you posted on "twin spirits", must know more! mwp - yours will take several reviews to fully comprehend, I'm working on it Lynne, congrats on your son's record deal, and the creative tribe you have brought forth. mellie: Me thinks Adam has some really huge deal up his sleeve, "there's more to come" or something like that was what he said. He does seem really happy and zen. Can't wait to find out what it is.
