Aww, junie, never dumb. Just longing for expressions of nobility, what is beautiful, rather than what is base.
"Deep inside, I feel that this world we live in is really a big, huge, monumental, symphonic orchestra. I believe that in it's primordial form all of creation is sound and that it's not just random sound, that it's music ... Music governs the rhythm of the seasons, the pulse of our heartbeats, the migration of birds, the ebb and flow of ocean tides, the cycles of growth, evolution and dissolution. It's music, it's rhythm. And my goal in life is to give to the world what I was lucky enough to receive: the ecstasy of divine union through my music and my dance." Michael Jackson
Adam used much simpler words in one interview from Japan, when he described that the life force itself is his inspiration. The interviewer paraphrased the meaning as life itself/living itself - very different.

That article I posted earlier about sports fandom traces the roots of fandom back to tribal warfare. The exploits of our chosen gladiator reflect those intense emotions and it seems to become very important to be known as a committed member of the tribe, as in: - "I've been a fan since 'Mama.'" (Devotion measured by the time spent in self-identification). Confession time: I've seen this one a lot and I feel like a black sheep cause when he was on Idol I saw his audition and my friend linked me to his Black or White, but I was just like "cool guy" and forgot about him until FYE's release :-[

glampoon I think you might find yourself in the company of many black sheep for any variety of reasons. I only started watching AI because a friend had a crush on Kris Allen. I didn't like Adam at all in the early rounds (which I watched retrospectively). I thought Satisfaction was a train wreck when I first saw it. I had the 'flu when I saw ROF. Erotic and runny nose/body aches/thumping headache don't go hand in hand - I actually muted the sound . I don't like the concept of fandom and tribes, let alone the reality. And simply can't bring myself to even identify as a "Glambert", although I don't mind when the reference comes from Adam. So, confess away sweet man. I enjoy your posts and your company . Did you want absolution? Punishment? Something else we can give you?

Perhaps we should set up our own webcams in closets a la Idol. I SAY I was a fan since "Mama," and that's somewhat true, but actually I was dashing in and out of the house and always missing the show because I was hauling my daughter to karate practice on Tuesday evenings and dealing with my rambunctious 2-year-old. My sister was keeping me up-to-date via text and I said to her at one point "I like that guy with the black hair." I didn't really become smitten until Tracks of My Tears. I was expressing to my husband, "He's not even using a falsetto! Holy crap." (Back before reading from countless master class vocal experts and I didn't know what the hell a head voice and chest voice was ;D) And I found Black or White and Satisfaction both shouty, lol, but loved the stage presence. I think his voice was great then, but it's freaking incredible now. That's one thing that has amazed me. It's gotten better and better with each performance and the sharp edge that whoever (dared to be) his detractors were hearing and objecting to during Idol improved over the season and especially in the last couple years. Love the quick-study quality about him! In fact, I remember some of the episodes for not being there to see them! During the Rock Week episode with Slash, which I really was looking forward to, I was in the ER with the above-mentioned two-year-old when he fell in the bounce house. My sister texted me what was happening and said he was killing Led Zep. Yes, my life was and is still pathetic enough that I was following AI by text in the hospital with my son who has a giant goose-egg on his head. ETA: Lol, Nikki! I thought KA was cute and would vote once for him, once for Allison, and three times for AL.

Another interesting article in The New Yorker (Sept 3, 2012 issue) entitled "Teen Titan" profiling Scooter Braun, manager of Justin Bieber and other upcoming teen talents. The guy's agressive and has a lot of drive with the profile focus mainly on how he's guided Bieber from those early YouTube clips into a global product where his "brand" now outshines his talent. The control and influence he has over Bieber is similar to that of Col. Parker over Elvis, Svengali-like. While Bieber now has fame and fortune, he seems to exist in a bubble created by Braun, and you wonder at what price for his ultimate well-being and soul. Reading this article makes me thankful that Adam is always his own person, and has the support of true friends and family to keep him well-grounded and loved for who he is, not some manufactured "product".
And Nikki, thanks for bringing over that quote from Michael Jackson about how music is the rhythm of life - our heartbeat, our breathing, the ebb and flow of the tides, the migration of birds, the seasonal changes, and just life itself. We can't exist without music. It's so very true. About ten years ago I lost a good part of my hearing very suddenly due to a virus - thankfully with advances in hearing aides I'm able to compensate as best I can now, but even with a hearing aide, I don't hear like most people do. One thing I do occasionally late at night is listen to Adam with my hand on the speaker so I can feel the pulses and vibrations of his voice - this works best when listening to his acoustic stuff. So as a deaf person, I can actually feel his music. I believe other deaf persons may be able to feel music in a similar way - through the vibrations of beats and patterns. Music and the rhythm of life are basically part of all of us.

What's another... I considered going to GNT Birmingham but was busy and like "meh he'll be back soon" :-[ Now it seems like I'll never see Sleepwalker or SFW live. Life sucks!

Another black sheep here. We don't watch Idol anymore, we watched the first three years, then got tired of it. The main reason we don't watch is because we love NCIS, it's our (dh & I) favorite show, and it is on Tues nights opposite AI.
I happened to see Adam the first time, while channel surfing during commercials, when he was singing ROF. I was not smitten then, and I remember commenting to my dh, "look at this guy, not your typical idol contestant". That was the only interest I had, until about the top 5, and my son called me from Houston and was telling me how good Adam was. Then I started taping the shows and watching them later, but only the last five, or maybe seven? I really can't remember. When I first got excited about Adam, I didn't know anything about online blogs, the AI site, MJ's or anything. I never even Googled Adam, and still don't, who needs that with all the great ninjas here? I did find Planet Fierce on Google, but hadn't watched any of the Zodiac or Caberet performances. Anyway, I can't really pin down when I got so "smitten" by Adam, probably when he sang "Feeling Good", I think I was watching the show by then. It was so curious to me that no one (judges) seemed to get that he was doing a performance just like the one of the "rat pack" of Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, and the other guy (sorry, can't remember the last guy) would have done, I remember the Dean Martin show, and the Gold Digger dancers, and Adam did a performance that is right out of that era, it was brilliant! I was totally impressed with Adam's version of "No Boundaries", CIGC, and of course all of his parts on the Finale show, especially singing with Queen. I happened to catch the entire season aired on Reality TV the following year, taped the whole season, and have watched them many times. But, I knew Adam wouldn't win, and my son and I had several conversations about it. I knew this because, and this is still very obvious to me despite all the "conspiracy and voter fraud" rumors, that quite simply, most of Danny Gokey's votes went to Kris Allen. Then, I kind of forgot about Adam. My summers are usually busy with vacations and grandkids, and did not watch ONE AI concert YT. I started getting excited about Adam again when his album came out, lurked at Planet Fierce, and watched with horror when Adam "tanked" on AMA show. (In retrospect, I LOVE Adam's AMA performance, and the only fault I see is his vocals were not the best that night, and the song seemed a little slow, and the backing singers were off. I have watched that performance many times.)
Still, I was by then really hooked, and finally joined PF in March of 2009. The rest is history.

I wanted to get back to a garden-topic raised earlier when MsZue was talking about presentation, etc. Here's what I've pondered for a while. It seems generally assumed that when a person dresses or appears in a manner somehow outside the norm for the workplace or community or society, that there is always extra attention. What kind of attention depends on what kind of deviation - like an aluminum foil hat (worn unironically) along with disheveled or 'non-artsy' odd clothes may signal a mental health issue. But if we put that category aside (along say gender nonconformity, religious categories, etc) and just look at people who dress/appear differently based on aesthetic choices, I have a question. It is generally assumed (is it?) that these people are seeking or at least indifferent to drawing attention - not necessarily as 'attention seekers' but more in the sense that they are following a path that includes a distinct break from the mainstream 'I know I'm different, an individualist and I don't care if that draws your attention, even disapproval'. In the case of someone like Adam, he has said happily that even before Idol he dressed to draw attention - he likes for people to take note. He clearly considers what he wears (and his hair and make up) a vital form of expression for himself. Finally we get to my question - what about people (working or living in a non-artsy world or profession) who would like to make aesthetic choices like: clothing that's just a bit different - maybe dated without being retro, or romantic, or punk, or early aviator , whatever); or a streak of magenta in their hair or braided crystals; or a tribal tattoo on the face --- BUT they don't follow their impulses because they don't want to be singled out for staring/attention/'what is that outfit saying?' They like a low profile and they don't want people to place them in the box of assumptions: 'oh, you must be telling me you are an eccentric or rebel or failed artist or...' Why is there no room for more expressive diversity in appearance in society? An attitude that would have people just shrugging and moving on or not even caring enough to shrug? Is such a world possible? And while most everyone would agree employers have right to have some dress code policies - no nudity, no halloween masks, or clown outfits for your surgeon for instance - how did we get to the very narrow, random definition of business dress? (Why is a tie a necessary thing? lol) Shouldn't I trust my doctor, lawyer, teacher, minister, if s/he has a green mohawk or a 3 piece vintage suit? But society has taught me to stop and question that - and I prob would. I don't think I would decide not to be a client/patient but I would look quite a bit closer instead of assuming all was well as I might with a traditionally dressed, esp 'tastefully conservative' dressed individual. oh dear. I myself am in the category of someone who already skirts ( :D) the mainstream by dressing a bit bohemian - but nothing unusual - my skirts are longer, pants wider, colourful blouses instead of Donna Karan, boots instead of heels. Still a couple of friends have mentioned I might get more consulting assignments if I 'bizzed' it up more. But I dream of rich textiles and more gem tone colors and, yes, braiding beads in my hair - maybe wear the paste on spiral swarovski cyrstal 'tattoo' a friend gave me. (And dressing up to go out is a different thing - this is more of how I would like to let more inner self express itself day to day) now I know some of you live in more liberal, artistic communities but in most 9-5 urban or suburban U.S. centers I visit for business - there's not much variation from traditional business wear or even the casual friday or button down/khaki/jeans combo and tshirt/jeans or shorts weekend wear. So if any of that made sense :-/, I'd be interested in hearing msZue's and others thoughts on what it all means. Maybe I should think harder about whether the unwanted attention would balance out with pleasure in increased expression - but it's not such an easy choice when staring and questions would make me uncomfortable.

I'm actually quite shy and don't like being the centre of attention but sometimes dress up a bit andro/feminine/out of the norm, but it's just cause I think it works for me.
