I just feel like a chat today. Alison, thank you so much for your warm welcome and words. I truly appreciate them. May I ask if your avi is your pet, or whether you just like the breed? I have a fluffy, white Lhasa Apso x called Ollie. He was meant to be my son's pet because he is an only child. My son is wryly amused by how it has all turned out because he says the dog is fatally attracted to me ??? I am a soft touch with animals and had to start watching Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, to get a grip on what I was doing with this animal. Ollie is 8 now and quite well disciplined, except he still has a slight tinge of small dog syndrome, but it's mild enough that he doesn't get his head bitten off by the rottweilers or ridgebacks etc. I see a lot of dachshunds at the dog park and I really like them, even though most of them snap my fingers off when I give them a treat. I also love them because they remind me of Schnitzel von Krumm (with the very low tum) ;D. And sugaree, be honest now, was coming to stan here the first thing you did when you got your electricity back? Aleks, you crack me up. Now I can't get the image you painted of the "laughing, ink-drying, spot-choosing, attentive, kind and agreeable Adam" out of my mind. Do you write poetry? The rhythm of the words is like a line dance! English is not your first language? Your grasp of it and its subtlety is extraordinary. Junie, It's nice to be loved and appreciated, isn't it? And I'm happy you survived the narcissism. I don't have anything profound to say, so carry on. Oh, noooooooooooo, Mahalia, then come and play. Come on, nose out of all that research, or Junie will have to think of some especially Texan-appropriate punishment for you ;D.

MY ELECTRICITY JUST CAME ON! AFTER 10 FUCKING MISERABLE DAYS! I have lights, heat, hot water! I can't begin to say how overjoyed I am right now. Of course, now we're in the middle of a pretty horrible nor'easter blizzard, but for the moment, I HAVE ELECTRICITY!
Hi everyone! YAY!!!! sugaree, I've been very worried about you, please post something in the Hurricane Sandy thread to let everyone know you are OK. (in Daily News, check the date of the Hurricane)

Sugaree - Congrats on the electricity and the hot water. I know how miserable that is. Hoping new storm isn't too hard on you~ **** Relic from fun days gone by - I don't know Tom as well as many, but I'll pour you glasses of whatever you like to make the nights as smooth and easy as this sound, and we'll listen as the wind blows through dry leaves outside the window. (two more planes - good thing too - my game face is showing some stress fractures )

Nice song mika! Thanks.
Storm story, let's see............ Lost power and phone last week Monday (day of storm). Went to work with hubby Tuesday to take a shower in the pilot’s lounge (he works for JetBlue). He was able to borrow a generator from work, so we were very very lucky. We would run it for 2 hours a day to take showers and warm the house a little. Then we would bring it to several neighbors to do the same for them. The woman two doors down is 89 years old and going blind, but she sure was a trooper. We never really got warm, but did the best we could.
Shadow had a very bad night once, but none of the local vets were open. She had a lot of trouble breathing, but was a little better the next day. Several days later, we found a vet with power and got some meds to make her more comfortable. She did her part too – nothing warmer than a furry dog to sleep with.
We have a fireplace and had people from the neighborhood asking for wood. Of course, we were happy to share. We didn’t burn a fire too long each day, because we didn’t want to run out of wood. It sucks to be cold day after day after day.
We had two trees out front that kind of split apart and lost major limbs – during the hurricane and again during the blizzard. Hubby used the generator to run his chain saw, cut it all up to get them off the power lines and unblock the road. Everyone on the block was out there helping. Nothing like physical labor to warm up. Tons and tons of huge trees down everywhere and lots of roads still impassable. Lots of traffic lights out.
Unfortunately, we lost most of the food in our frig and freezers.
And there is a major gas shortage. The price went up 50 cents a gallon in a week. Lots of stations without power that can’t pump gas. When one opens, the lines are around the block several times. People park their cars in line the day before and show up the next morning to wait. Average time in line is usually 5+ hours – I’m not exaggerating! Again, we got lucky. Hubby’s company brought in oil tankers to supply gas to their employees. They pumped it in to smaller fuel trucks and sold 10 gallons to any employee with a car or gas can for $3 a gallon. Great company that takes care of their employees. That started a few days ago and will continue as long as they can find the tankers and the shortage is over.
So all in all, we survived and are luckier than a lot of people. I have new respect for our ancestors who survived before electricity. Oh, and anyone who has written a book or tv show that talks about or shows a character reading, doing needlepoint, etc. by candlelight is full of shit! All there was to do was stare out the windows and hope the street lights came on.
Sorry for typos and poor grammar. Typing still sucks for me.

OMG, sugaree! What a saga. Thank goodness for JetBlue, they sound amazing. I am glad you updated us on Shadow, I had really been wondering if he had made it and was still with you. I was touched to learn how the whole neighborhood has come together to share in this ordeal. You guys, I am so excited about the VH1 Divas show! I think this is ideal for Adam and can't wait to see what he does with the opportunity! I liked reading about Ollie, nikki. And today between all the pets and divas, I have been thinking about a bunny I once knew. We already had a bunny at the time, but the animal shelter here overflowed in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and they were begging people to come take some of the animals to make more room. This rabbit wasn't a hurricane refugee. She had been there for months. She hadn't been adopted because she was obese (therefore not that "cute") and, the lady warned, a "diva." She had the most beautiful vulnerable brown eyes. We took her home and she turned out to be the most affectionate, emotionally intuitive animal we ever had. We named her Flower. She got to play loose and dig in the back yard as much as she wanted and she got in great shape ... though she never was a bunny "size 2." And as far as being a diva ... well, imagine how frustrating it must be when you are The Queen and everyone around you is too clueless to realize it! I bet you thought that I was soft and sweet You thought an angel swept you off your feet But I'm about to turn up the heatOnce she got to a home where her royal status was acknowledged, she and all of her subjects lived happily ever after. Indeed she was a benevolent Queen. So I have a soft spot in my heart for divas -- of which Adam is DEFINITELY one. I ran across some more great Hurricane Sandy aftermath images, for seoulmate and anyone else who appreciates the genre. Here is decency breaking through the loss and difficulty:

Nikki, Thanks for asking about my avi. I found the image online and thought it really represented me. I am a dachshund lover. You are right about their nippiness around strangers, but you couldn't ask for a better companion--I will always have a housefull. I'm sitting under a pile of wiener dogs as I type this . I have four dogs, one sheltie and three daschunds--my sheltie is afraid of the camera, so he's hard to capture in a group photo. I don't know how to adjust the size of pics--hope it's not too big. Sugaree, JetBlue will now be my airline of choice!
