Okay, back from yesterday's thread.
If, like me, you were unable to come to Atop yesterday, please go read last night's thread. Run, don't walk.
This place is..... just IS. [That probably makes no sense, but yeah.]

I was looking at Susan Sontag's essay "On Camp." It's long (and that, right there, I promise, will be the extent of my critical engagement with it here). This is one point that resonated for me, relating to Adam: "Camp taste is a kind of love, love for human nature. It relishes, rather than judges, the little triumphs and awkward intensities of 'character' . . . Camp taste identifies with what it is enjoying. People who share this sensibility are not laughing at the thing they label as 'a camp,' they're enjoying it. Camp is a tender feeling. "That "tender feeling" part for me touches on the "limits of irony" topic from last night. interglacial.com/~sburke/pub/prose/Susan_Sontag_-_Notes_on_Camp.html

give me camp any day. Just love it. Queen and Cher, Bette Midler and Elton John - just love it. But I will take Adam anyway I can get him. LUST AND LEATHER for the win !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Me too...the campier the better. I could definitely get into Leather and Lust ! NoAngel....loved your vision. I'm just relieved that there were berry and radish necklaces for color and adornment.....I was beginning to feel uneasy and drab. Radishes, the new bling !

Lindy -- that is beautiful -- and camp to the max. I am adding to page 1. I don't worry about Adam not being theatrical -- it seems to be an innate part of who he is. He likes to put on a show. Everything theatrical is not Campy. On the GNT --- I think that Strut and Fever were Campy and Theatrical, but Sleepwalker was Theatrical. Look at Adam's Idol performances -- Feeling Good was campy, but nothing else really was. And can you get more theatrical than Adam's original Mad World -- and neither Idol version was campy at all. What I am curious about is when "theatrical" because a bad thing. Even after Adam's audition, Simon said something like, "I think you are --- "theatrical" and therefore not current." That was a WTF?!?!? moment for me, since so many huge pop stars are completely theatrical -- Madonna, Gaga, MJ, Britney, etc. And Idol was supposed to be search for the next pop star, not the next rock band or singer-songwriter. I think too 'theatrical' is a code for too 'Broadway'. There's a difference between being theatrical like Madonna in a concert and being theatrical using 'Broadway' singing style and mannerisms. I love it when Adam is theatrical and/or campy but I don't like it when he slips into 'Broadway' like he does in Soaked. I love Broadway - on Broadway but not in a pop-rock concert. For better or worse, musical theater is a bit stale from the perspective of the younger demographic. He can be as theatrical and campy as he wants, in fact I love it, but I want him to sound current at the same time.

ITA with the bolded portion. Love the example of "Sleepwalker" as theatrical, not campy. I would also say that the Opening Sequence, with the OTT, fun costuming is definitely campy. As to the red portion, are we forgetting "Play That Funky Music"? Because I thought that was waay more campy than "Feeling Good," which to me was more theatrical. PTFM, with the psychedelic, '70s background and wa-wa arrangement. His bright colors and exaggerated dancing were WAY campier than FG, which he sang with bombast and a wink, but wasn't all that silly or playful, as compared to PTFM. Really enjoyed both Q3 and NoAngel's essays (lol, LOVED the original "Batman" series and even as kids we knew it was supposed to be OTT, tongue-in-cheek. Why have the people who grew up on the camp of the '60, '70s and '80s develop amnesia later in life? The B-52s were huge when I was in high school and college – such good times!! And the line, "A pretty, androgynous guy was selling twigs for a buck apiece..." made me LOL. Whole essay was too funny!!

With 37 hours to release, GN Live DVD+CD has been holding at #11 on Amazon US for over 24 hours (moved up to #10 for a bit). More surprising to me is that it have been consistently in the top 200 iTunes pop albums -- now at #113 -- was up to #106 earlier today.
ETA: JMHO but I believe that Play That Funky Music was cheesy (in a good way) but not campy. Similarly ROF was not a traditional performance but not campy.
But Campiliciousness is in the eye of the beholder. Elton John with feathers and rhinestones is campy for sure.

It was a chill-inducing moment at every show – and by the audience's reaction, I would say it was well received everywhere. And I think he proved you can integrate the elements of many styles and come up with his own amalgam of originality. To me, saying, "This style belongs here and this style belongs there," is putting everything back into boxes.
